At the Heart of Vibrant K-Art
Since its establishment in 2005, ONE AND J. Gallery has been discovering and introducing promising Korean artists to the world. Indeed, the gallery has actively participated in renowned art fairs overseas since its inception with the explicit purpose of promoting Korean contemporary art. Over the past 18 years, it has shared this journey with many Korean artists. In 2018, at Art Basel, the world’s most prestigious art fair, Suki Seokyeong Kang, introduced to the world by ONE AND J. Gallery, became the first artist from an Asian gallery to win the Baloise Art Prize. In early September 2023, the gallery relocated from Bukchon to Cheongdam-dong and reopened its doors. The gallery has also collaborated with Seoul Art Week during Frieze Seoul and Kiaf Seoul, leading a variety of discourses to expand interest in contemporary Korean art. We asked Wonjae Park about the unique role of local galleries as an integral part of Seoul’s dynamic art scene and how he sees Korean art today.

Q1.
Q1.
Since the very beginning, ONE AND J. Gallery has been actively introducing Korean artists overseas. What was your intention when you started the gallery in 2005?
I was familiar with international art because I studied abroad. When I returned to Korea, I realized there were many talented artists, but it was unfortunate that they were limited to the domestic scene and did not receive global attention. I was convinced that they would have better opportunities if I could adequately introduce promising artists overseas, so I started working hard to do precisely that. I wanted to support all aspects of our artists’ lives so they could focus on their work and not be limited to the gallery space. At the same time, I also wanted to introduce them overseas. I had a clear direction from the start, so within six months of opening the gallery, I began participating in overseas art fairs and international activities.
Q2.
Q2.
I’m curious about the reaction from overseas art fairs you participated in early on in the gallery’s history. What are the strengths of Korean artists that are being recognized overseas?
The response was good from the beginning. In 2007, the international art fair ARCO in Madrid chose Korea as the guest country of honor and invited fourteen Korean galleries to participate. Less than two years after we’d opened, we were one of them! We were the first gallery to showcase Yeesookyung‘s ceramic works, which were very well received, and the results of the other artists we showed also received much attention. People from different countries are often surprised to see the craftsmanship and quality of Korean artists’ works. Everyone appreciates the high level of completion. I think the first thing many people notice is the expressiveness, which is quite visually refined. As a result, the more you look into them and discover the stories behind them, the more attractive they become. That’s why I’ve heard many people say, “It seems like all the hidden gems are in Korea.”

Q3.
Q3.
In 2018, Suki Seokyeong Kang won the Baloise Art Prize for her work at Art Basel in Switzerland. We heard that she was the first artist from an Asian gallery to win the prize. What did they appreciate about her?
Everyone talks about globalization these days, but there’s also much interest in the locals. I think originality is not simply different from others but genuinely you. When you tell your own story, it doesn’t overlap with other people’s stories and isn’t uninteresting. That’s especially important. Exactly, that’s what happened with Kang’s artworks. She started with a personal story about her grandmother and then dealt with traditional Korean culture in a Western aesthetic context. It was effective because she told a story that Westerners didn’t know in a language they could read.

Q4.
Q4.
What do you value most when judging an artist’s potential?
I focus on whether the artist really needs to tell that particular story, and that’s because sustainable work is possible only when the artist has something they have to tell. An artist’s work doesn’t end with a single exhibition; you must look at it for at least five to ten years, maybe decades, before its value rises. You have to build trust between the gallery and the artist over that long period. For me, checking whether the artist’s story comes from their life is imperative.
Q5.
Q5.
When you first opened the gallery, you envisioned it as an agency model that supports artists in everything they do. I’m curious about your philosophy and how ONE AND J. Gallery supports its artists in the long run.
to you?
Once we’re working together, I don’t get involved in the artist’s work or direction. The most alluring part of contemporary art is the newness of it, and the moment I get involved, it’s probably gone. Instead, I often visit the studio and ask the artist many questions. When preparing for Jong Oh’s solo exhibition last year, I said, “I want to see work that I haven’t seen anywhere else,” he said he’d never heard that before. I wasn’t asking for a series that was popular in the market. I think that’s what makes ONE AND J. Gallery different.

Q6.
Q6.
Your gallery recently moved to Cheongdam-dong. What is the significance of moving to Gangnam and reopening?
We’ve been presenting programs in Gahoe-dong for 18 years, so many people know what makes our gallery distinct. When we were looking for a new space to share art with more of the public, we realized that Gangnam is currently drawing people’s attention once again. The SongEun Art and Cultural Foundation has a gorgeous new building nearby, and the White Cube Gallery, which recently expanded into Korea, has set up its space near Dosan Park. There are also several local galleries, so we thought it would be an excellent location for people to walk around and see different exhibitions. We look forward to communicating with more people in the future.

Q7.
Q7.
You organized MeeNa Park’s House for the opening exhibition, and your booth at Frieze Seoul was a warm mix of Park’s works and the works of other artists.
MeeNa Park had a significant influence on me when I launched the gallery. Our first exhibition at ONE AND J. Gallery in 2005 was with her. Significantly, our first exhibition after the gallery relocation is with her. When we participate in art fairs, we have been focusing on showing our distinctive quality to introduce our gallery as impressively as possible in three to four days. That’s why we take the overall curation of the booth very seriously. For Frieze Seoul, we introduced MeeNa Park to coincide with the gallery’s reopening and incorporated a new series by Seung Yul Oh. We wanted to add a warm feeling to the space, so we balanced it with a wooden sculpture by Suh Yongsun, who will be exhibiting next spring.

Q8.
Q8.
You launched the digital art platform Artifacts with an emphasis on getting Millennials and Gen Zers—who have recently emerged as the mainstream groups of the art world—to stay in the art market. In the future, there will be more attempts to integrate technology into art in our society. What direction do you see yourself taking?
Artguide, a location-based exhibition guide app, is earning much positive feedback among the many services Artifacts offers. Previously, you had to know at least one relevant word to search for an exhibition. You had to enter a search keyword to make it work. I designed this app so that people could look around and discover shows without any information at first. I’m still revising it so people can get the information they need to see an exhibition immediately. I don’t want anyone to stay on the platform instead of seeing the artwork, as they’ll ultimately want to be able to focus on the artwork in person. We’re currently working on an MOU with NAVER LABS to find ways to improve the viewing experience. The more data people have access to, the more transparent the art market will be, and the more we can publicly discuss how artworks are priced. More data must be shared so artists who create great artworks can be valued fairly throughout the market.
Q9.
Q9.
There is much interest in Korean art these days. In recent years, global galleries have been coming to Korea. How do you see this interest affecting the Korean art scene? As a local gallery, how are you dealing with this trend?
During this year’s Frieze Seoul and Kiaf Seoul, we collaborated with Seoul Art Week on several activities. The most memorable ones were the art talks with international art figures. When asked how he would view Frieze being held in Korea, world-renowned curator Hans Ulrich Obrist said, “The current frenzy of interest can easily fade away. We must, therefore, ask ourselves what we should take away from it.” I couldn’t agree more. When Asian art was in the spotlight in 2008, works by certain Korean artists were fetching huge prices at world auctions. However, as the excitement died down, many of the artists who were highly regarded at that time were no longer in the spotlight. On the other hand, others who have steadily built their careers, regardless of the excitement, are still in the spotlight. I hope the Korean art world doesn’t make the same mistake. Local galleries shouldn’t falter or lose momentum when global mega-galleries enter Korea. Rather than getting swept up by focusing on what sells, it’s essential to continue doing what we’ve been doing exactly. That being said, we should also listen to the voices of those coming to Korea from other countries and seek to build bridges with global galleries.

Q10.
Q10.
How would you advise someone interested in Korean art and starting to collect when it comes to their point of view on artworks?
By objective indicators, Western art may seem “greater,” but I don’t think art is about superiority. I would argue that it’s much more meaningful—and with more enduring value for collectors—to collect Korean works that have a Korean voice in them. There’s a difference in the joy you feel when you buy a piece of art that everyone recognizes as famous at a high price and when you hold onto a piece of art that you’ve been drawn to spontaneously. Today, it’s impossible for us not to feel a deeper connection to the work of contemporary Korean artists at work in 2023. I want collectors to experience more joy concerning the resonance of art and its discovery. Instead of passively waiting for artists to produce excellent results, we need to be active participants in finding meaning in their works. No work is inherently great; its value is co-created by those who share its resonance.
