Getting Closer to the Essence of Music
Early music performance uses instruments from the same era in which the composer wrote the piece, follows the techniques of the time period, and interprets the music from the perspective of historicism. It is an area that requires creativity in that it is a process which pursues authenticity. Sun-Ah Kim, who recently became the principal conductor for the Bucheon Civic Chorale, played an important role in establishing early music in Korea. She says that styles and expressive methods have changed over the years, but what is important is the message that music wants to express.

Q1.
Q1.
What motivated you to turn to early music while studying classical music?
Tong-Soon Kwak, a professor of mine back in university, was someone who’d received her Ph.D. in Baroque music and also majored in the cembalo 1) in the U.S. Thanks to her background, I was able to learn the music of Bach and music from even earlier times along with the Baroque performance style. When I was studying in Germany, I really fell in love with Baroque music, taking master classes from incredibly skilled musicians who played Baroque music with instruments of that era.
Q2.
Q2.
Many say that you had a significant impact on the formation of the Korean early music market in the 2000s. What changes do you feel have occurred compared to when you first returned to Korea?
It’s true that the number of period instrument players and lovers of that music have grown relative to the early 2000s. Since then, world-class early music groups have steadily visited Korea, and people’s interest in early music has mushroomed. This is also the result of great efforts made by small and large early music groups in Korea. Collegium Musicum Seoul, a group of period instrument performers for which I am currently the musical director, jointly performs with municipal choirs. I feel rewarded because many conductors want to collaborate with us using period instruments.
Q3.
Q3.
Early music performances using period instruments tend to be low in volume and controlled in techniques. It seems that is why early music has a limited number of ardent followers.
That’s very true. Figuratively speaking, early music tastes a bit bland. And that’s one of the reasons early music has a hard time taking root in Korea, a country where things change rapidly and dynamically. Nonetheless, the essence of music always wins out, and I think this essence includes authentic performances, outstanding skills, as well as rising to bold challenges to discover a new repertoire.

Q4.
Q4.
What pieces do you play to expand the repertoire of Collegium Vocale Seoul and Collegium Musicum Seoul?
For the past few years, the two groups have held regular concerts with pieces by classical composers such as Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven. It was something I had dreamed of for a long time. It’s ideal to perform works from the Classical period with period instruments used centuries ago just as they do in Europe. To fulfill that goal, we therefore need Classical period instruments as well as many performers from abroad. That’s why we are satisfied right now with playing those pieces using modern instruments that highlight the classical style. Someday we want to play Classical period music with instruments from that period and play the true sound of the Classical period for Korean music lovers.
Q5.
Q5.
Early music embraces the essence of music in that musicians use period instruments and follows the playing techniques of the period. The process is also creative, right?
Yes, that’s right. At a time when classical music was considered nothing new in the 20th century, the early music movement gave the European music world a new direction. As early music performers expanded their repertoire and played musical instruments from the 19th century, the range of choices for music enthusiasts became broader. Mainstream orchestras also opened their eyes to new sounds and interpretations with early music performers as their mentors, which presented an opportunity to explore a new path in the current European classical music market. In other words, newness was created based on tradition, and this also forms a creative principle for all composers.
Q6.
Q6.
As an early music conductor, what do you think is the most classical or the most contemporary?
The word “classical” means a certain standard and criteria, while “contemporary” feels like it’s challenging and enterprising. Put another way, classical music doesn’t only mean works from the Classical period; it also brings to mind the ability to play music in the right way, that is, with solid basic skills. Contemporary doesn’t just mean today’s music. Rather, it can imply enterprising and challenging playing techniques, the development of a new repertoire, and different communication methods. The two features at symmetrical points are virtues that all musicians should possess, and they must strike a balance between the two in order to be successful.
Q7.
Q7.
What were your music activities over the past two years like during the pandemic?
It was a very difficult time. First of all, performances which were supposed to be held jointly with overseas performers were canceled, and many performances, including a concert tour in Germany, were either canceled or postponed. When the pandemic didn’t relent, I recorded choir songs a cappella alongside a small number of choir members and released the songs to the public. In addition, regular concerts and invitational concerts came to be held again after careful consideration and planning. My proposal for Bachfest was selected for the “Art must go on” project organized by the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture, and we held Bachfest Seoul online last year, which ultimately led to the decision to continue the Bachfest Seoul festival every year. It think that’s the greatest gift for me from the pandemic.
Q8.
Q8.
For those experiencing an early music performance for the first time, what mindset should they go in with to best appreciate it?
Be completely open-minded. The classical music market in Korea has relatively few followers because classical music performances in this country focus on music from the 18th and 19th centuries. However, the history of music is extremely long and there’s no shortage of great music. I want people to know that there’s a beautiful, unexperienced world out there. Early music is mainly connected with language. Whether it’s a vocal piece or an instrumental one, rhetoric was the most important principle in composing early music, so it was used idiomatically enough to give a name even to a small motif. Consequently, if you appreciate early music by focusing on what the music is saying to you and what emotions it aims to convey, you’ll be able to easily feel the message that the composer is trying to deliver through the music.
Q9.
Q9.
As the new principal conductor at the Bucheon Civic Chorale, tell us about your plans for the stage
this year.
I think it’s important to make plans by selecting themes that everyday people may be interested in so that they can enjoy a wide variety of the arts. As such, we’ll be putting on museum concerts, fairy tales through music, and concerts with poetry readings. Taking advantage of the Bucheon Civic Chorale’s abundant experience, its profound sound, and its prodigious singing skills, I’d like to put together a professional repertoire focusing on pieces from the Classical and Romantic periods, or even Korean pieces. In that sense, I arranged works by Haydn and Schubert for my inaugural concert. This year, I’m planning to perform a lot of German romantic music, including Brahms’ A German Requiem.
1) A predecessor to the piano, it was mainly used from the 16th to the 18th century. It is also called a “harpsichord.”
