세명의 관점을 잇다
- 지오메트릭 스터디 Into one Geometric Study - Park Sung-eun, Park Kyu-eun, Park Jung-woo
점, 직선, 곡선, 면, 부피 등 공간의 성질을 뜻하는 기하학Geometric. 기하학은 점과 점이 선으로 이어지고 다시 면으로 이어지며 무수한 패턴을 만들어냅니다. 지오메트릭 스터디Geometric Study의 작품이 그렇습니다. 하나의 스팩트럼을 통과하지만, 무궁무진한 컬러가 뻗어 나가듯 말이죠. 미술, 무용, 패션, 미디어 등 다양한 장르의 작업자들이 하나의 주제로 페어링하기 때문입니다. 안무가인 박성은, 미술 작가 겸 헤드피스 디자이너 박규은, 패션 디자이너 박정우 세 남매는 서로 다른 관점을 하나의 줄기로 융합하기 위한 노력을 바탕으로 자신들만의 공연과 댄스 필름을 선보이고 있습니다. 《기아 디자인 매거진》에서는 세 명의 아티스트들의 작품과 이를 통해 관객과 어떻게 페어링하는지를 그 이야기를 들어봅니다. 운동장에 선을 그어 사각형, 삼각형 판을 만든다. 번호가 적혀 있는 곳에 돌을 던지고, 외발로 폴짝폴짝 뛰어 그 돌을 줍고 왔던 길을 다시 돌아온다. 성공하면 그 칸은 내 땅이 되지만 칸이나, 선을 밟으면 땅을 빼앗긴다. 어린 시절 동네 친구들과 흔히 하던 놀이, 사방치기. 동네마다 부르는 이름은 달랐지만, 돌을 던져 외발로 줍는 것만큼은 통일된 규칙이었다. 하나의 놀이가 사회의 축소판이라고 생각한 지오메트릭 스터디는 《사방치기》로 자신들만의 이야기를 부려놓는다. 지오메트릭 스터디의 사방치기는 우리가 알던 사방치기는 아니었다. 사방치기 판은 모래에 색을 입혀 그렸고, 그 위에서 무용수들이 자신만의 언어를 몸으로 표현했다. 형형색색의 모래가 흩어졌다 모이기를 반복한다. 흩어짐과 모임의 반복 속에서 관객들은 무용수의 몸짓(무용)을 통해 형형색색의 모래(미술)가 섞여가는 모습에서 ‘사방치기’가 펼쳐진다. 세 명의 아티스트가 하나의 이야기를 위해 뭉친 이유다. Geometric refers to the properties of space: points, lines, curves, surfaces, and volumes. Geometry is about dots and points leading to lines, leading to surfaces, leading to myriad patterns. The works of Geometric Study pass through a single spectrum, but stretch out into an infinite array of colors. This is because artists from various genres, including art, dance, fashion, and media, are paired together under one theme. The three siblings, choreographer Park Sung-eun, art writer and headpiece designer Park Kyu-eun, and fashion designer Park Jung-woo, present their own performances and dance films based on their efforts to fuse different perspectives into a single thread. Kia Design Magazine talks to the three artists about the work they create and how they pair it with their audience. Draw lines on the playground to create squares and triangles. Throw a rock at a numbered space, hop on all fours, pick it up, and run back the way you came. If you succeed, the space is yours, but if you step on a square or a line, you lose it. A common childhood game with friends in the neighborhood, Sabangchigi* Each neighborhood had a different name for it, but the rules were the same: throw stones and pick them up with your one foot. Thinking that a game is a microcosm of society, Geometric Study creates their own story with “Sabangchigi”. “Sabangchigi” in Geometric Study were not Sabangchigi as we know them. The spinning board was painted with colored sand, on which the dancers expressed their own language with their bodies. The colorful sand scattered and gathered. In the repetition of scattering and gathering, the audience can see the colorful sand (art) mixing through the dancers' gestures (dance), and “Sabangchigi” unfolds. This is why the three artists united for one story.
상상과 심상이 피워낸 꽃

실감 나는 화병에, 실감 나는 꽃들이 아름다운 자태를 뽐내며 피어 있다. 사진인가? 싶어 다가가는 순간, 그림이라는 사실에 다시 한번 충격을 받게 된다. 바로 김성윤 작가의 작품이다. 꽃 정물화. 어쩌면 어디서나 볼 법한 흔한 작품이 아닌가? 반문하는 이들도 더러 있을지도 모른다. 하지만 김성윤 작가가 그려낸 꽃 정물화는 찬찬히 작품을 바라보다 보면 알 수 있다. 절대 같은 시기에 개화할 수 없는 시공간을 초월한 꽃들이 만발해 있다는 것을. 흠뻑 꽃들에 취해 있을 때 꽃을 꽂은 화병이 우리를 한 번 더 고개를 갸우뚱하게 한다. 17세기의 마네풍을 오마주했다고 하는 작가의 설명과는 달리 유약이 흐르는 동양적인 꽃병이 놓여 있다. 《프리즈Frieze LA 2024》에서 익숙한 꽃 정물을 새롭게 해석한 작품들을 2시간 만에 ‘완판’하며 전 세계 수많은 갤러리스트와 관람객을 마법의 화원으로 이끈 이유다. 익숙한 꽃 정물화에 자신만의 상상으로 생명을 불어넣으며, 심상으로 꽃을 피워낸 김성윤 작가의 화원 속으로 들어가 보자. 돌이켜보면 조금은 유별나고 조숙한 ‘중3’이었다. 그때부터 화가의 꿈을 키웠으니 말이다. 초상화로 유명한 스웨덴의 앤더스 소른Anders Zorn와 미국의 존 싱어 서전트John Singer Sargent, 러시아의 일리야 레핀Ilya Repin 등의 사실적이고 정교한 작품을 좋아했다. 한때는 단순하게 그림을 잘 그리는 것이 미술의 전부라고 생각했지만, 미술을 공부하면서부터 모든 것이 미술이라는 복잡 다변한 생태계를 이루는 미세한 우주의 먼지임을 깨닫게 되었다. 무엇을 그릴 것인가에 대한 고민은 평소 좋아했던 인물화에 대한 집요한 탐색과 탐구의 여정으로 이어졌다. Captured in the frame, flowers bloom beautifully in a porcelain vase. You approach it thinking it is a great photo then are surprised to discover that it is actually a painting. This is a common reaction to the work of artist Kim Sung-yoon. A casual observer may think Kim’s painting is yet another floral still life, an art form that has existed for centuries. However, Kim's floral still-life paintings reveal distinctive qualities when you take a closer look. First, the flowers in the vase bloom at different times of the year, a combination that transcends time and space. The ceramic vases that he captures are yet another feature that sets Kim’s floral still-life paintings apart from others. Kim’s inspiration comes from the paintings of 17th century artist Édouard Manet.  However, unlike these paintings, the vases in Kim’s painting are oriental in style, and covered in glaze. Kim recalls himself as a rather unusual and precocious teenager, already determined to become a painter in 9th grade. He loved the realistic and sophisticated work of Anders Zorn from Sweden, John Singer Sargent from the United States, and Ilya Repin from Russia, who are all famous for their portraits. He used to think that art was all about drawing well, but as he studied more, he came to realize that there are a myriad of things that make up the realm of art. The question of what to paint led him on a journey of relentless search and exploration of his favorite art form, portraits.

세계인 - 베르너 사세 Contemplating the beauty of

산일까? 바위일까? 혹은 사람일까? 추상적인 수묵화를 바라보고 있자면 머릿속에서 상상의 나래가 펼쳐진다. 베르너 사세는 자신이 그려낸 작품에는 제목이 없다고 말한다.  ‘무제(無題)’이기 때문에 하루는 산이 될 수도 있고, 또 다른 하루는 바위 혹은 사람이 될 수도 있다. “한지 위에 먹이 노니는 데로 그림을 그려 나갑니다. 그래서 제목이 없어요. 관람객들도 제목이 있으면 한정된 시각으로 바라보게 되죠.” 한국과 50년 가까이 인연을 맺어오고 있는 독일인 한국학자이자 수묵화가 베르너 사세Werner Sasse가 생각하는 문화예술은 ‘정해진 답이 없는 것’이라고 생각하기 때문. 한지에 스며드는 먹처럼 한국이란 나라에 서서히 스며든 베르너 사세에게 우리가 미처 놓쳤던 한국의 이야기를 들어보았다. 1966년, 전남 나주에 푸른 눈의 한 남자가 도착했다. 그에게 비친 한국의 풍경은 생경했지만 이전에 본 적 없었기에 매력적으로 다가왔다. 서양식 주택과는 다른 한옥이, 논두렁에서 일을 하다 술 한잔 걸치곤 툭하고 내뱉는 노인의 노래(시조) 등이. 그렇게 한국이란 나라에 점차 스며든 그 사람은 바로 독일인 베르너 사세다. 비료공장에 기술고문으로 부임한 장인을 따라 한국에서 생활하게 된 그는 기술고등학교 강사로 일하며 한국 문화에 관심을 갖게 되었다. 1960년 개발이 막 시작된 한국이었지만 지방은 그때 까지만 해도 농경사회를 유지하고 있었다. 이 때문에 전통의 흔적을 쉬이 찾아볼 수 있었던 것. 한옥과 막걸리, 새참, 창과 시조 등은 베르너 사세에게는 매력적인 한국의 모습으로 다가올 수밖에 없었다. 당시 그는 한국어를 공부한 적도 없었을뿐더러 한국이란 나라에 대해 아는 것이 전무했기 때문. 그렇게 우연한 기회에 한국과 연을 맺은 그는 4년 후 다시 독일로 돌아가 한국학을 공부하기 시작하며 독일인 최초 한국학자가 되었다. 2007년 한국 대학교에 교수로 초빙되어 한국으로 돌아온 그는 한국인보다 한국학을 열정적으로 파고들며, 한국 전통 수묵화를 그리는 화가로 살아가고 있다. 《기아 디자인 매거진》은 그에게 “우리도 모르는 한국의 이야기를, 화선지에 담고 싶은 한국은 무엇인지”를 물었다. Is it a mountain? A rock? Or a person? When looking at abstract Ink Paintings(Sumukwa), the imagination unfolds in the mind. Werner Sasse says that his works have no titles. Because they are untitled, one day it could be a mountain, and the next day it could be a rock or a person. “I draw pictures as the ink runs on the hanji. That's why there is no title. If there is a title, visitors will look at it from a limited perspective.” This is because the German Korean scholar and ink painter Werner Sasse, who has been connected to Korea for nearly 50 years, believes that culture and art are things that have no set answers. We listened to the story of Korea that Werner Sasse, who has slowly been absorbed into the country like the ink that soaks into hanji, has missed. In 1966, a man with blue eyes arrived in Naju, South Jeolla Province. The scenery of Korea that he saw was unfamiliar, but it was attractive because he had never seen it before. Hanok, which is different from Western-style houses, and the songs (si-jo) of old men who work on the ridges of rice paddies and then drink a glass of soju. That person who gradually penetrated into the country of Korea was Werner Sasse, a German. He came to live in Korea after following his master, who had been appointed as a technical advisor to a fertilizer plant and became interested in Korean culture while working as a lecturer at a technical high school. In 1960, when Korea was just beginning to develop, the provinces were still maintaining an agrarian society. This is why traces of tradition could be easily found. Hanok, makgeolli(Traditional liquor), Saechim*(meal),Traditional songs and poemswere all attractive aspects of Korea for Werner Sasse. This was because he had never studied Korean and knew nothing about the country. He became connected with Korea by such a chance, and four years later he returned to Germany to study Korean studies and became the first German scholar of Korean studies. After returning to Korea in 2007 as a professor at a Korean university, he has been more passionate about Korean studies than Koreans and is living as a painter who paints traditional Korean ink paintings. Kia Design Magazine asked him, “What is Korea that you want to put on the paper of Korean stories that we don't even know?”

외국인이 주로 언급하는 서울의 매력은 과거와 현대의 공존입니다. 울창한 빌딩 숲 사이로 비치는 궁궐과 도성, 옛 거리, 극명한 이질감 속 교차점이 ‘서울’이라는 도시를 기억하게 만드는 점일 것입니다. 전통의 궁궐과 빌딩의 이질적인 차이마저 조화롭게 공존하는 것. 기아는 이것에 주목했습니다. 10월 19일부터 11월 2일까지 서울 성수동에 위치한 스페이스 S1에서 기아 디자인 철학인《오퍼짓 유나이티드Opposites United》 전시가 개최됐습니다. 이번 전시는 'Opposites United: Intersections Beyond Boundaries'를 주제로 경계를 넘나드는 ‘교차점’을 포착하여 새로운 소통의 공간을 창조했습니다. 전시는 지치지 않는 혁신가의 공간Room of Relentless Innovators, 창의적 모험가의 공간Room of Creative Risk-takers, 문화의 동반자로서 모든 참여자의 의지와 소통을 융합하는 공간 Room of Culture Vanguard 세 공간에 세 명의 아티스트들이 오퍼짓 유나이티드를 담아냈습니다. 아티스트들의 창의적인 접근으로 마법처럼 펼쳐놓은 그들의 이야기를 들어봅니다. When asked what makes Seoul attractive, foreigners often say it is the coexistence of old and new. The coexistence of palaces, castle walls and old streets between modern skyscrapers is what makes Seoul memorable. Kia focused on this harmonious coexistence of contrasting elements in Seoul. Kia hosted an exhibition of Kia's design philosophy, ‘Opposites United’ from October 19 to November 2 2024 at Space-S1 in Seongsu-dong, Seoul. The theme of the exhibition, ‘Opposites United: Intersections Beyond Boundaries,’ aimed to capture the ‘intersections’ that cross boundaries and create a new space for communication. The exhibition was organized into three spaces; Room of Relentless Innovators, Room of Creative Risk-takers, and Room of Culture Vanguard, a space designed to fuse the input and exchanges from all of the participants. We interviewed the three artists who successfully captured Kia's philosophy of Opposites United in the exhibition about their creative approaches.

혼합물과 화합물은 다릅니다. 혼합물은 두 가지 이상의 물질이 섞이지만 각각의 성질은 그대로 가지고 있는 반면 화합물은 서로 단단하게 결합하여 새로운 물질이 되어 물질의 성분 자체가 다른 성질을 가지게 되지요. 이 화합물은 물질에서만 국한되는 것이 아닙니다. 서로 다른 영역에서 활약하는 아티스트들의 만남에서도 화학적 시너지는 발휘됩니다. 기아는 서로 다른 영역의 아티스트들이 ‘페어링’하여 새롭게 창조한 이야기를 지난 4월 ‘밀라노 디자인워크’에서 선보였습니다. 바로 전시 였습니다. 두 작가가 경계 너머의 창의적 작품을 선보였는데요. 이 전시에 참여한 아티스트 안나 갈타로사 Anna Galtarossa와 니콜라스 베커Nicolas Becker가 협업한 ‘The Spirit of Disco’를 소개합니다. 전방위적으로 활약하는 안나 갈타로사(이하 안나)는 움직이는 키넥틱 아트를 바탕으로 작품을 구현하는 과정에서 니콜라스 베커(이하 니콜라스)와 사운드를 찾아가는 과정을 통해 ‘The Spirit of Disco’만의 예술적 가치를 보여주죠. 《기아 디자인 매거진》에서는 두 아티스트가 함께 작품을 만들어 내기까지의 과정과 그 안에 담긴 스토리, ‘페어링’의 의미를 어떻게 견지하고 있는지 이야기를 들어봅니다. 니콜라스 베커는 영화 사운드의 세계에서 다방면에 걸친 거장으로, 사운드 디자이너, 폴리 아티스트, 작곡가로 활동하고 있다. 그중 사운드 디자인에 있어 각 프로젝트에 맞는 맞춤형 마이크 만드는 방식으로 작업을 하는데, 이 방법은 그의 작업과 현대 미술의 영역을 엮어낸다. 특히 니콜라스는 2021년 4월 다리우스 마더Darius Marder 감독의 걸작인 로 아카데미 음향상을 수상했다. Mixtures and compounds are different. In a mixture, the original substances retain their individual properties, whereas a compound is a new substance that binds tightly together and becomes a new substance with a new property. Chemical synergy is not limited to substances; it also happens when artists from different fields collaborate. Kia presented a story of artists from different fields “pairing up” to create something new at the Milan design week last April. The title of the exhibition was Opposites United: Intersections Beyond Boundaries and it featured 'The Spirit of Disco', a collaboration work between two artists active in different fields, Anna Galtarossa and Nicolas Becker, to showcase their creative work across boundaries. Anna created a kinetic artwork and worked with Nicolas to find the right sound for her work, which culminated in The Spirit of Disco. Kia Design Magazine delved into the processes invovled in this collaboration, the story behind the process, and their perspectives on the meaning of 'pairing up'. My name is Nicolas Becker, I was born in France in 1970. I’m a foley artist, sound designer and composer. I have been working with sounds for 35 years. I live in Paris but work with people all over the world. I am Anna Galtarossa, I was born in Italy in 1975. I’m an artist and I’ve been working most of my life on sculptures and installations, mostly things that move. My art is generally very colorful, and my pieces prefer to be outside the protection of museums and galleries. I had my first exhibition as an artist in 2004, at the Spencer Brownstone Gallery, and they still represent me to this day.

creating an energetic forest
익숙한 소재가 조금도 익숙하지 않은 오브제로 탄생한다. 가열이나 냉각 같은 물성 변화의 과정을 거치지 않았는데 번쩍거리던 금속은 나이테를 두른 나무가 되고 차가움은 따스함이 된다. 이 변화는 파이프 피팅이라는 산업 부품을 찾아낸 덕이다. 스테인리스를 소재로 작업을 하는 아티스트는 많지만 산업 부품 파이프 피팅을 통해 대조적인 자연을 그려내고 있다는 건, 작가의 놀라운 발상이 있었기에 가능했던 일. 작가는 인공을 자연에 한 발 더 가까이 가기 위한 지속적인 여정을 멈추지 않는다. 인공으로 자연을 만드는 아티스트의 다음 발상과 상상이 궁금하다면? 은근한 금속 냄새와 고요한 용접이 기다리는 금속조각가 이형준의 신세계로 입장할 시간이다. 2호선 문래역에서 내려 우체국이 있는 방향으로 걷다 보면 일렬로 정렬한 철공소들이 나타난다. 오래전 문래동은 끊임없이 귀가 먹먹해지는 쇳소리와 시야를 가리는 먼지바람에 정신이 아득해지는 철공 단지였다. 집이 있던 보라매공원부터 4~5킬로미터를 하릴없이 걷곤 했던 소년에게 쇳가루와 분진이 날리는 문래동 철공 단지는 반짝반짝 빛나는 신기하고도 신비로운 보물섬이었다. 예술은 가장 어두운 곳에서 탄생한다고 했던가. 유일하게 활기찬 것이라고는 기계들뿐이었을 그곳에서 소년은 이미 무한한 가능성을 목도하고 있었는지도 모른다. 어린 시절 가능성의 무한한 자유로 자라났다. 철공과 예술. 이질적으로 느껴지는 조합으로 이루어진 미로를 사뿐한 발걸음으로 작가 이형준은 부유한다. 평범한 산업용 파이프 피팅Pipe Fiffing을 구부리고 잇고 두드리고 줄을 그어 완성한 선반은 우리가 ‘선반’으로만 알고 있던 것의 범주를 과감히 초월한다. 페르낭 레제Fernand Léger의 입체주의 그림에서 본 것 같기도 하고 레오나르도 다 빈치의 설계 도안에서 본 것 같기도 한 익숙하면서도 낯선 형태가 자꾸만 시선을 붙든다. ‘파이프 피팅’은 피상적 포맷에 불과할 뿐, 어쩌면 아티스트는 아트와 퍼니처, 예술과 실용, 냉기와 온기, 인공과 자연 등 하나가 될 수 없는 둘을 ‘피팅’하려는 시도와 실험을 거듭하고 있는 게 아닐까. 《기아 디자인 매거진》은 실험적 예술가이자 예리한 관찰자, 진지한 실험가인 이형준, 그에게 묻기 시작했다. Familiar materials are transformed into unfamiliar objects. Shiny metal pieces become wood complete with tree rings, without undergoing any heating or cooling processes, creating cold objects that radiate with warmth. Such transformation is made possible thanks to pipe fittings also known as pipe connectors. There are many artists who work with stainless steel, but an artist using pipe fittings to depict objects from nature is unprecedented. Hyungjun is on a continuous journey to bring artificial objects a step closer to the nature. We invite you to the world of metal sculptor Hyungjun Lee and explore the artist's next ideas. In Seoul, there is a street full of ironworks located near Mullae subway station. Decades ago, Mullae-dong was an ironworks complex full of sound and dust. During his childhood, Hyungjun used to walk several kilometers from his home near Boramae Park to the ironwork complex and was fascinated by it. It is said that art is born in unlikely places. Indeed, Hyungjun saw infinite possibility in the noisy and dusty complex full of industrial machinery. Somehow, Hyungjoon Lee floats through a maze of seemingly disparate combinations of industrial ironworks and crafting arts effortlessly. For example, his shelves which are made by bending, connecting, hammering, and lining ordinary industrial pipe fittings, boldly transcends the traditional boundary of shelves. The familiar yet unfamiliar shapes that seem to have come from a cubist painting by Fernand Léger or a design drawing by Leonardo da Vinci, draw our attention. The artist is using 'pipe fittings' as a medium, experimenting to blend two unlikely ideas and objects, such as art and furniture, art and practicality, coldness and warmth, man-made and natural. Kia Design Magazine interviewed Hyungjun Lee, a daring artist, keen observer, and serious experimenter, on what he is trying to achieve.

풍경이 익숙해지면 우리는 그것에 큰 감흥을 느끼지 못한 채 스쳐 지나친다. 하지만 익숙한 듯한 풍경 속에서도 섬세한 관찰을 통해 익숙한 것을 낯설게, 평범한 것을 아름답게 화폭에 풀어내는 이가 있다. 바로 독일 화가 잉고 바움가르텐(이하 잉고). 일상에서 건축의 구조, 소재 등을 탐구하며, 자신만의 상상을 스토리텔링 하여 잉고만의 시선을 만들어 낸다. 잉고의 그림을 마주하면 마치 ‘이상한 나라 앨리스’로 빨려가듯 새로운 세상이 눈앞에 펼쳐진다. 그래서 우리는 무심코 스쳐 지나갔던 풍경을 다시금 돌아보게 된다. 16년째 한국에 살면서 서울을 관찰하며, 한국의 주택과 건물을 자신만의 해석으로 그리며 한국인들과 상호작용을 하는 잉고의 이야기가 시작된다. 독일의 서부 하노버 교외 작은 마을에서 태어나 그곳에서 학창 시절을 보냈다. 그 학생은 풍부한 문화가 있는 대도시를 동경했고, 미술학도이자 젊은 예술가가 되고자 파리로 떠났다. 독일에서 학업을 마친 후 ‘파리 시각예술고등예술원 Institute of Higher Studies in Visual Arts Paris’에 합격하여 초대받은 것. 그곳에서만 머물지 않고, 대만, 일본, 한국으로 유랑해왔다. 다문화적 관점을 견지한 잉고는 2008년 홍익대학교 교수가 되어 학생들을 가르치고, 1970년에서 1990년 사이에 지어진 콘크리트 주택에 매료되어 한국의 집과 건물을 화폭에 담고 있다. 잉고 바움가르텐이 한국의 주택에 매료된 데에는 유럽에서 나고 자란 환경이 한몫했다. 대부분의 유럽은 일률적으로 집을 짓는다. 지붕의 규격, 방의 구조 등 하나하나 정해진 법규가 있고, 집을 보수하기 위해서는 20년 정도가 흘러야 한다. 반면, 한국의 주택은 전통과 현대의 대비가 뚜렷하면서도 주택의 구조나 형식이 저마다 다르다. 이 대비 속에서 한국인들의 개성이 묻어 있는 저마다의 스토리가 잉고의 시선을 끌었다. 그런 잉고는 한국인이라면 무심코 지나쳤을 지붕을 보고 영감을 얻었다. “마치 두 손을 모으고 기도하는 모습처럼 느껴졌어요.” 이방인 시선에서 한국 주택은 영감의 원천이었고, 한국 주택이나 건물의 한 단면을 극대화하여, 자신만의 상상을 더해갔다. 《기아 디자인 매거진》은 한국적이면서도 한국적이지 않은 잉고 바움가르텐만의 세계가 궁금했다. 한국에서 어떤 매력을 느끼는지, 그 매력을 어떻게 그려내는지 등 한국을 바라보는 잉고의 관점이. When we become familiar with a landscape, we often pass by it without much thought or feeling. Yet, there are those who, through careful observation, manage to transform the familiar into the unfamiliar and the ordinary into the beautiful, expressing it through drawing. One such individual is the German painter Ingo Baumgarten. He explores the structures and materials of architecture in everyday life, weaving his unique imagination into a distinct storytelling style. Encountering Ingo's artwork feels like being drawn into a new world, much like being pulled into "Alice in Wonderland." This prompts us to revisit the landscapes we once overlooked. And this is the beginning of the story of Ingo, who has been observing Seoul after living in Korea for 16 years and interpreting its houses and buildings in his own way, and engaging with the local people. Born in Hanover, West Germany, later raised up in a small town close to Düsseldorf, Ingo spent his school days there. He always longed for the rich culture of the big cities and set off for Paris to pursue his dream of becoming an art student and a young artist. After ending his studies in Germany, Ingo was accepted and invited to the Institute of Higher Studies in Visual Arts Paris to study. Not limiting himself to Paris, he also traveled to Taiwan, Japan, and Korea. Embracing a multicultural perspective, Ingo settled in Korea in 2008, becoming a professor at Hongik University to teach fine art. Captivated by the concrete houses built between the 1970s and 1990s, he brings Korean homes and architecture to life on canvas. Ingo Baumgarten’s fascination with Korean houses can be traced back to his upbringing in Europe. In most parts of Europe, houses are built uniformly, with specific regulations governing aspects like roof dimensions and room layouts. There are strict laws in place, and houses typically require about 20 years to undergo renovations. In contrast, Korea displays a stark contrast between tradition and modernity, with each home having a unique structure and design. This contrast and unique features of each house caught Ingo’s eyes. And he was inspired by the roof, something many Koreans might pass by without a second thought. “It felt like hands clasped together in prayer,” he remarked. From the foreigner’s point of view, Korean homes were a source of inspiration. By magnifying particular elements of Korean houses and buildings, and blending them with his own imagination, he portrayed the landscapes of Korea in his art. was curious about Ingo Baumgarten's unique world, one that feels both distinctly Korean and yet not, through the eyes of a foreigner. What was it about Korea that attracted him? How did he translate that allure into his work? And how does Ingo perceive the country?

스페이스미조 Creating intricate synergy with nature, people, and art

보통 건축 설계에 반영해야 하는 주변 상황이나 맥락을 ‘콘텍스트(Context)’라는 단어로 표현합니다. 이 때문에 건축가에게 있어 콘텍스트는 영감의 원천이 되기도 하는데요. 도시재생이라면 더욱더 이 콘텍스트는 건축가에겐 중심이 될 수밖에 없습니다. 새로운 실험과 도전으로 기존 건축물과 차별화하면서도, 기존 건축물이 가진 주변의 맥락과 어울림은 유지해야 하기 때문이지요. 그 명제를 기꺼이 받아들이며 낯설면서도 익숙한 공간이 탄생했습니다. 바로 스페이스미조입니다. 남해안의 드넓은 바다, 어선이 그득한 미조항, 그 뒤로 펼치는 산과 여러 섬이 중첩되어 만들어낸 한국화에서 볼 법한 풍경. 이 중심에 스페이스미조를 설계한 박석희, 이선희 건축가가 있습니다. 두 건축가는 미조항의 콘텍스트를 한국의 미감으로 풀어내기 위해 기존 건물의 골자는 그대로 두고, 미조항의 풍경과 어울리도록 스케일은 줄여갔습니다. 《기아 디자인 매거진》이 ‘스페이스미조’를 선택한 이유입니다. 건축가로서 도전과 시도를 통해 복합문화공간이라는 현대적 이름을 달았지만 한국적 미감으로 풀어내 미조항의 풍경에 자연스럽게 스며든 어울림. 《기아 디자인 매거진》에서 두 건축가가 써 내려간 스페이스미조의 이야기를 따라가 봅니다. 필자는 몇 해 전부터 ‘천년의 탐사대’를 꾸려, 한국 건축의 흔적을 찾아다니고 있었다. 최근에 알게 된 것은 부여에서 시작해, 고(句)려, 백제, 신라, 다시 고려, 그리고 조선. 현재에 이르기까지 아름다움에 대한 한국인의 미감이 시대에 따라 달라져 왔으며, 전 국토에 걸쳐 복합적으로 연결되어 있다는 것을 발견할 수 있었다. 이러한 발견의 한복판에 서면 필자는 한국의 건축가로서 이것을 현대 건축에 스며들도록 하고자 하는 시대정신에 마음이 조급해진다. 고유섭 선생이 우리나라의 미감을 정의한 ‘구수한 큰 맛’을 교본 삼아, 건축을 해나가면서, 필자의 설계는 도면에서 도저히 표현할 수 없는 복합적인 감각의 아름다움을 향해 나아가고 있다. 스페이스미조는 이러한 감각의 복합적인 상승 관계를 이끌어내는 작업이었다. In architecture, the word 'context' usually refers to the surroundings or factors that must be reflected in a design. For this reason, context is often a source of inspiration for architects, especially when it comes to urban regeneration. Context is even more central for architects when designing new buildings, as they need to experiment and differentiate themselves from the existing architecture, while still blending in with the surroundings and existing buildings. Space Mijo is a fine example of the successful fusion of unfamiliar and familiar elements. Mijo Port boasts a picturesque view with the vast blue ocean dotted with fishing boats, and layers of small islands and mountains. Two architects, Park Seokhee and Lee Sunhee created Space Mijo by redesigning an old warehouse to enable it to blend in at the Mijo Port whilst having a distinctive touch of Korean aesthetics and retaining its basic structure. Space Mijo is designed as a cultural complex yet has elements of traditional Korean aesthetics, thanks to the designers’ successful take on incorporating distinctive Korean aesthetics into its design. This makes Space Mijo a perfect item to be in the spotlight in the Kia Design Magazine. Read on to learn all about the story of Space Mijo written by the two architects. For many years, we have traveled around the country, exploring, and discovering different Korean architecture. Over time we learned that the Korean sense of beauty has changed over time, as different dynasties have risen and fallen, from Buyeo to Joseon. We also learned that elements of Korean aesthetics have been dispersed over time, and regions are intricately connected across the entire country. Upon discovering all this, we became eager to translate it into contemporary Korean architecture. Late art historian, Ko Yoosup, summarized traditional Korean beauty as ‘profound savory taste’. We used this as a guideline in the Space Mijo project, which led to some wonderfully complex sensory beauty that could not be expressed in a drawing. The project was all about achieving a complex synergy of sensory beauty.

The work of these two artists, who create new visual experiences with familiar materials, provides fresh inspiration for “Opposites United.” Sometimes, in an area where you think there cannot be anything new anymore, you come across something fresh that exceeds your wildest expectations and inspires a sense of wonder. Hair artist Gabe and plant artist HA I I HWA are two such surprising artists. Gabe, who uses mother-of-pearl, resin, wood, and other out-of-the-ordinary materials to showcase a new world of hairstyling, confesses that his inspiration comes from childhood memories. HA I I HWA, on the other hand, is influenced by Eastern art and Buddhism. She creates strange alien plants using plants and electronic parts. 지난 6월 기아글로벌디자인(이하 기아디자인)으로부터 조직 활성화를 위한 워크숍 설계를 제안받았다. 자동차 디자인은 많은 디자이너들이 서로 협업하며 결과물을 완성하는 과정을 거치기 때문에 디자이너 개인의 크레딧보다는 조직을 우선하는 편이다. 특히 커다란 포부와 의욕을 가지고 입사한 디자이너가 디자인 작업에 몰두한 지 3~5년 정도 되면 리셋을 위한 리프레시가 필요해진다. 이를 위해 창의적 사고를 재충전하는 맞춤형 1일 워크숍 기획이 필요하다는 게 골자였다. 워크숍을 통해 어떤 시간을 보내고 싶은 걸까, 조심스레 물어보니 몇 가지로 압축할 수 있었다. 밑줄이 필요한 단어로 빼곡한 문장들에는 구성원에게 도움을 주고 싶다는 기아디자인의 진심이 가득 담겨있었다. 특히 ‘오퍼짓 유나이티드Opposites United’라는 철학 아래 많은 이들의 영감을 총체적으로 모아 결과물을 도출하는 조직 입장에서, 그 근본을 이루는 디자이너 개인의 정체성과 브랜딩에 신경을 쓰고 계속 소통하려 노력한다는 점은 명징했다. 게임 디자인을 바탕으로 몰입형 워크숍(immersive workshop)을 진행하는 우리 ‘놀공NOLGONG’의 장기를 활용하면 조직과 개인에게 모두 도움 되는 흥미로운 장을 마련할 수 있지 않을까, 생각이 들었다. In June 2023, I was approached by the Kia Global Design Division (hereinafter Kia Design) to organize a workshop that would revitalize their organization. Automotive design is a process where many designers collaborate to complete a product, so the organization tends to take precedence over individual designer credits. That is especially true for designers who joined the company with great ambition and motivation yet could still use a boost of momentum to reset themselves after three to five years of such immersive design work. The key was to design a customized one-day workshop to recharge their creative batteries. After carefully asking them what they wanted to do during the workshop, I narrowed it down to a few things. Kia Design’s sentences, filled with words that needed to be underlined, contained the organization’s sincere desire to help its members. In particular, it was clear that as an organization that collectively harnesses the inspiration of so many people to produce results under Kia’s design philosophy, “Opposites United,” it still cares about the identity and branding of each designer—which becomes the organizational foundation—and tries to continue communicating with them on an ongoing basis. I thought we could create an exciting opportunity that would benefit both the organization and the individuals themselves by leveraging NOLGONG’s extraordinary ability to conduct immersive workshops based on game design.

아주 어릴 때부터 자동차, 기차, 자전거를 참 좋아했어요. 몇 살인지 기억도 안나네요. 기계적인 면모를 띤 움직이는 사물에 항상 관심을 빼앗겼죠. 아파트 창밖을 내다보며 저 멀리 지나가는 열차의 화물칸 갯수를 세곤 했다니까요. 동네에 처음 보는 차가 지나가거나, 큰 트럭을 발견할 때면 뛸 듯이 기뻐했던 경험도 기억나네요. (웃음) 또 다른 취미는 그림 그리기였어요. 건축물이나 아파트 설계도를 그렸는데, 건축사무소에서 일하시던 할머니의 영향을 받은 게 아닐까 싶어요. 물론 자동차도 자주 그렸습니다! TV에 나온 F1 자동차를 따라 그리곤 했죠. 제가 디자인에 관심을 가진 특별한 계기가 있어요. 14살 때 제 사촌이 제품 디자인을 공부하고 있었어요. 그가 만든 작업물을 본 순간 깨달았죠. ‘내가 하고 싶은 건 바로 이런 거였어!’ 저는 제품 디자인에서 한 걸음 더 나아가, 어릴 적부터 늘 제 넋을 빼놓던 자동차를 디자인하고 싶다는 꿈을 품게 되었어요. 하지만 목표를 이루기까지는 조금 시간이 걸렸어요. 당시 제가 살던 폴란드 바르샤바에는 자동차 회사가 없었고, 자동차 디자인을 전공할 길도 묘연했어요. 그래서 독일과 오스트리아에서 공부를 했답니다. 시간이 흘러 2017년부터는 기아유럽디자인에서 일할 수 있었죠. 지금 이렇게 《기아 디자인 매거진》과 인터뷰를 하는 거 보니, 결국 꿈을 이룬 게 아닌가 싶네요. 하하. Ha, that’s a very tricky yet straightforward question. The answer to it might be a bit too long, though, if I would go into every detail. Anyway… Ever since I can remember, I have been fascinated by cars, trains, and bicycles; I have no idea why. Everything that was moving and had some technicality always got my attention :). I remember looking out the window of the flat I lived in as a kid and counting wagons of trains passing by in the distance. I remember feeling super happy seeing a new car or big truck on our street. Also, for some reason, I can’t explain why I was drawing a lot: architecture and plans of the apartments (I think my grandma, who was working in the architecture office, influenced me a bit; my dad is a fantastic drawer, too, by the way!) And, of course, I was drawing cars! Especially F1 Cars when I watched it on TV (I was six years old). Things evolved quite a bit over the years, and finally, when I was 14, I got interested in art and design. My cousin was studying Product design and showed me some stuff he was working on. BUM, that was it! I decided to take it a step further and try car design, even though we didn’t have any car design school or car industry in Poland. It took some time, some moving to different countries and learning, but hey, now I am here, talking to Kia Design Magazine, so I think things worked out quite well in the end :)

드랙 아티스트 나나영롱킴 Beyond Prejudice: Advancing Toward a World of Infinite Possibilities — Nana Youngrong Kim, Drag Artist
나나영롱킴은 현재 한국에서 가장 인지도 높은 드랙 아티스트다. 연극영화과에 진학해 배우의 길을 모색했지만, 남녀의 고정된 성역할과 로맨스가 주를 이루는 관습적 연기에서 한계를 느끼던 그는 우연히 드랙 아티스트를 조명한 영화 〈프리실라〉와 〈헤드윅〉을 접했고, 영화에 등장하는 드랙 아티스트의 화려한 의상과 소품에 마음을 빼앗기며 드랙 문화에 빠져들었다. 그때부터 현재까지 18년이라는 시간 동안 그는 기존의 클럽 무대에 머무르지 않고 다양한 문화 예술 장르에 도전하며 ‘성소수자들만의 문화’라는 드랙의 선입견을 허무는 데 지속적인 역할을 담당했다. 브라운아이드걸스, 마마무, 박효신, 유노윤호 등 다양한 K팝 아티스트와 협업했고, 럭셔리 브랜드 베르사체, 모스키노, 로에베, 루이 비통 등의 러브콜을 받았으며, 코스메틱 브랜드 헤라HERA의 캠페인 모델로 활동하며 컬래버레이션 제품을 발매했다. 그는 드랙을 주제로 한 개인 다큐멘터리 〈NA, NA〉를 제작하고, 한국 드랙 아티스트로는 유례없이 사진전을 여는 등 드랙 문화의 확장성을 계속 증명하는 중이다. Korea’s drag culture, once considered “cross-dressing” and enjoyed by just a small group of people, is now entering a new phase. Today, different definitions and categories of drag culture are emerging, and drag artists are expanding into a variety of genres. One name on this new cultural map is Nana Youngrong Kim, one of Korea’s leading drag artists. As a drag artist, Kim embraces freedom of expression and the diversity of genres, direct proof of his belief that drag is the act of being able to be absolutely anything. Drag culture is a liberating medium in that it can help anyone in the world move forward in the direction of their choice. Kia Design Magazine met up with Kim and listened to his perspective and attitude to change many of the stereotypes surrounding drag and highlight the infinite possibilities of drag culture as a driving force to enrich our times.

K아트의 안팎을 조망한다는 것 Looking Out from Both Sides of a Surging K-Art Movement
한국의 로컬 갤러리로서 잠재력 넘치는 한국 작가를 발굴해 해외에 알리는 역할을 해온 원앤제이 갤러리, 글로벌 메가 갤러리로서 한국에 진출한 타데우스 로팍. 이 두 곳을 이끄는 박원재 원앤제이 갤러리 대표와 황규진 타데우스 로팍 서울 총괄 디렉터의 이야기를 통해 ‘상반된 개념의 창의적 융합(Opposites United)’을 고민해 봅니다. 박원재는 원앤제이 갤러리 대표다. 2005년 갤러리를 설립한 이래 가능성 있는 한국 작가를 세계 미술계에 꾸준히 소개하고 있다. 2018년 스위스 ‘아트 바젤’에서 원앤제이 갤러리의 강서경 작가가 아시아 갤러리 소속으로는 처음으로 발루아즈 예술상을 받으며 큰 화제를 모았다. 갤러리를 운영하면서 2020년 디지털 아트 플랫폼 ‘아티팩츠Artifacts’를 설립하고 2022년 위치 기반 전시 앱 ‘아트가이드Artguide’를 론칭하며 미술에 대한 대중의 접근성을 높이기 위해 노력 중이다. 현재 (재)예술경영지원센터 자문위원이자 한국화랑협회 국제이사를 맡고 있다. 황규진은 타데우스 로팍 서울의 총괄 디렉터다. 런던에서 석사 과정을 마치고 블레인서던 갤러리 런던 지점에서 근무하다 2017년 타데우스 로팍 런던 오픈과 함께 타데우스 로팍의 아시아팀 디렉터로 합류했다. 이후 아시아 관련 프로젝트를 진행하며 2021년 타데우스 로팍 서울 개관에 맞춰 대한민국 서울로 거점을 옮겼다. 현재 타데우스 로팍 서울에서 다양한 기획 전시를 선보이는 동시에 로컬 갤러리와 협업해 한국 작가 발굴에 힘쓰고 있다. 한국은 지금 세계 미술계에서 가장 흥미로운 지역 중 하나로 떠올랐습니다. 수준 높은 미술 애호가와 새로운 컬렉터, 재능 있는 작가가 많을 뿐 아니라 아트 신의 움직임도 활발하기 때문입니다. 오랫동안 한국 작가와 함께 성장한 원앤제이 갤러리는 북촌에서 청담동으로 최근 이전하며 변곡점을 맞았습니다. 새로운 공간에서 고유한 정체성을 지키며 더 많은 소통을 시도할 예정입니다. 한편, 유럽에 기반을 둔 국제적인 메가 갤러리 타데우스 로팍은 2년 전 아시아 거점으로 서울을 선택했습니다. 한국 미술시장의 가능성을 확인한 타데우스 로팍 서울은 최근 공간을 확장하며 다채로운 전시를 선보이는 중입니다. 한국에서 성장한 로컬 갤러리와 한국에 진출한 글로벌 갤러리는 자신의 역할에 충실하면서 긴밀한 협업을 통해 한국 아트 신을 더욱 풍성하게 만들고 있습니다. While ONE AND J. Gallery is a local gallery in Korea that has played a role in discovering and introducing highly promising Korean artists to the world, Thaddaeus Ropac is a global mega-gallery that has recently established itself in Korea. We explore “Opposites United” through the stories of the two people who are spearheading these galleries, Wonjae Park, Managing Director of ONE AND J. Gallery, and Kyujin Hwang, Executive Director of Thaddaeus Ropac Seoul. Wonjae Park is the Managing Director of ONE AND J. Gallery. Since establishing the gallery in 2005, he has been steadily introducing promising Korean artists to the international art scene. In 2018, Suki Seokyeong Kang of ONE AND J. Gallery attracted a lot of attention when she received the Baloise Art Prize at Switzerland’s Art Basel, making her the first artist represented by an Asian gallery to accomplish the feat. In addition to running the gallery, Park has been working to increase public access to art by setting up the digital art platform Artifacts in 2020 and launching the location-based exhibition app Artguide in 2022. Wonjae Park is currently an advisory board member of the Korea Arts Management Service and an international board member of the Galleries Association of Korea. Kyujin Hwang is the Executive Director of Thaddaeus Ropac Seoul. After completing her master’s course in London, Hwang worked at Blain Southern Gallery’s London branch before joining Thaddaeus Ropac as Director for Asia with the opening of Thaddaeus Ropac London in 2017. She then moved to Seoul, South Korea while in the midst of working on a series of Asia-related projects and to coincide with the opening of Thaddaeus Ropac Seoul in 2021. Today, Kyujin Hwang is responsible for presenting a variety of curated exhibitions at Thaddaeus Ropac Seoul and collaborating with local galleries to discover Korean artists. South Korea has emerged as one of the most interesting places on the global art scene right now, not only because there are so many sophisticated art lovers, new collectors, and talented artists but also because the art scene is most definitely on the move. ONE AND J. Gallery, which has been working with Korean artists for quite some time, reached an inflection point with its recent move from Bukchon to Cheongdam-dong. In the new space, the gallery will try to communicate more actively with visitors while maintaining its unique identity. Meanwhile, Thaddaeus Ropac, an international mega-gallery based in Europe, chose Seoul as its Asian base two years ago. Seeing the potential of the Korean art market, Thaddaeus Ropac Seoul has recently expanded its space and is in the process of presenting a variety of exhibitions. Local galleries that have blossomed in Korea and global galleries that have established a presence in Korea are doing their part and working closely together to enrich the Korean art scene.

생각하는 법 How to Discern between What You Know and What You See
감동은 마음을 움직일 때도 찾아오지만, 생각하는 법을 뒤흔들 때도 찾아온다. 우리가 쉽게 쓰는 ‘고정관념’이라는 표현처럼, 누군가의 마음에 깃든 생각이란 좀처럼 바뀌지 않기 때문이다. 그러니 항상 새로운 생각이 필요하고, 누구보다 앞서 아이디어의 첨단을 달려야 하는 이에게 생각하는 법을 바꾸는 시도는 얼마나 중요할까? 아트북 서점에서 수차례 재입고와 품절을 반복한 전설의 책 『변신술』(1997)의 저자이자, 붓질 한 번에 비명 한 번 내지르는 영상 작품 〈“노란 비명” 그리기〉(2012)로 모두의 뇌리에 강렬한 존재감을 심은 작가 김범은 그야말로 남다른 ‘생각법’을 잘 보여주는 인물이다. 1963년 태생의 김범은 언제나 의문의 작가였다. 작품보다 작가가 많이 드러나는 것을 꺼려 인터뷰를 최소화하는 이는 더러 있지만 김범이 자신을 드러내지 않는 방식은 남달랐다. 그의 작품을 마주할 기회는 더러 있었던 반면 그가 참여한 인터뷰 기사는 찾기조차 힘든 실정이다. 한국 개념미술 신에서 매우 중요한 축을 차지하는 위상에 비해 간헐적인 전시만으로 존재를 드러내는 작가 김범. 그래서 2010년 아트선재센터 이후 무려 13년 만에 리움미술관에서 열리는 이번 개인전은 존재감부터 남다르다. 1990년부터 2010년 중반까지 전개한 김범의 작품 세계를 관통하는 대규모 서베이 전시를 위해 리움미술관은 그라운드갤러리와 블랙박스 등 주요 공간을 할애하며 회화, 조각, 설치, 영상 등 총 70여 점의 작품으로 관람객을 맞이한다. 전시장에 들어서면 누구나 한번쯤은 봤을 법한 TV 프로그램 〈동물의 왕국〉 속 치타와 영양의 쫓고 쫓기는 장면이 펼쳐진다. 제목이 ‘볼거리’인 이 작품은 너무나 익숙한 풍경 때문에 무엇이 ‘진짜’ 볼거리인지 알아채는 데 시간이 꽤 걸린다. 원경에서 대단한 속도로 움직이는 동물들을 따라가는 카메라의 순발력에 주목해야 할까? 익숙한 텔레비전 프로그램을 전시장에서 상영한다는 점에 초점을 두어야 할까? 그러나 영상을 계속 보다 보면 뭔가 이상한 점을 느낄 수 있다. 도망쳐야만 하는 초식 동물과 매서운 속도로 사냥하는 육식 동물의 관계가 뒤바뀐 것이다. 사회적인 통념 아래 약자로 인식하던 피식자가 마치 맹수라도 된 양 포식자를 뒤쫓는다는 점만 빼면 모든 풍경이 매우 익숙하다. 우리가 충분히 합의한 전제를 가볍게 뒤집는 이 작품은 이번 전시에 펼쳐진 ‘생각 연습’의 예고편과도 같다. A deep impression forms when something moves our hearts. However, it can also start when something shakes our thinking. That is because, as we often say, stereotypical thinking is hard to change. How important is it to try to change the way you think when you need new ideas and need to be on the cutting edge of ideas before everyone else? Kim Beom—author of the legendary book The Art of Transforming (1997), which has constantly been selling out at bookstores since its publication, and the same artist who left a strong impression on people with his video work Painting “Yellow Scream” (2012), in which he emitted a scream with every single brushstroke—is a perfect example of how to think differently. Born in 1963, Kim Beom has always been a mysterious artist. Although some artists do not give a lot of interviews simply because they do not want to reveal more about themselves than their work, Kim’s reasoning is different. Interestingly, while we have had many opportunities to see his work over the years, it is hard to find any interviews with him. Despite his status as an essential part of the Korean conceptual art scene, Kim’s presence is limited to intermittent exhibitions. That is why the solo exhibition at Leeum Museum of Art, 13 years after his 2010 exhibition at Art Sonje Center, is unique. For this large-scale survey exhibition of Kim’s oeuvre from 1990 to mid-2010, Leeum Museum of Art dedicates most of its significant spaces, such as the Ground Gallery and the Black Box, to welcome visitors with a total of 70 works, including paintings, sculptures, installations, and videos. Upon entering the exhibition venue, you are greeted by a cheetah and an antelope—chasing and being chased—from the TV show Animal Kingdom. Titled “Spectacle,” the work is so familiar that it takes a while to realize the “real” spectacle. Should we consider the camera’s ability to follow animals moving at breakneck speeds in the distance? Should we focus on the fact that a familiar television program is being shown in an exhibition hall? But you might notice something strange as you continue to watch the video. The relationship between a herbivore that is forced to flee and a carnivore that hunts at breakneck speed is reversed. The scene is very familiar, except that the prey—what society perceives as the underdog—is chasing after the predator like a wild beast. This lighthearted subversion of a premise we have all come to expect is like a trailer of the thought exercises in the exhibition.

반갑습니다. 저는 김규환 책임연구원입니다. 2010년 입사해 기아 남양디자인센터에서 익스테리어 디자인 프로젝트에 참여해 왔고, 현재 기아넥스트디자인외장실에서 익스테리어 디자인 전반에 대한 디자인 퀄리티 업무를 담당하고 있습니다. 자동차 디자이너 중에는 어릴 때부터 진로를 결정한 분이 굉장히 많은 것 같아요. 반면 저는 상대적으로 늦은 시기에 자동차 디자이너를 꿈꿨어요. 대학교에 입학했을 당시만 해도 영상이나 광고 쪽에 관심을 두고 있었거든요. 그러다 우연히 한 선배를 만나게 되었는데요. 그때까지 대화한 디자이너 중 생각이 깊고, 본질을 꿰뚫는 통찰력이 돋보이는 사람이었어요. 그 선배가 마침 자동차 디자인을 전공하고 있어서 자연스럽게 저도 흥미를 느끼게 되었고, 그러다가 자동차 디자인에 빠지게 되었네요. 저희 업무는 크게 두 가지로 나눌 수 있어요. 첫 번째는 디자인 단계 후반에서 디자인 퀄리티를 높이는 일입니다. 품평회에서 결정한 디자인을 더욱 돋보이는 방법을 고민하고, 이를 토대로 개선안을 내고, 수정한 디자인을 검증하는 과정을 거치는 일을 반복해요. 수정과 검증을 계속할수록 디테일의 퀄리티가 높아지더라고요. 두 번째는 앞서 말한 과정을 거쳐 다듬은 디자인을 지켜내는 일이에요. 디자인을 결정하는 고정 단계는 전체 자동차 개발 프로세스의 중간 지점에 해당하는데요. 이후 절반 남짓한 기간에는 다양한 일이 진행되면서 불가피하게 디자인을 수정해야 할 경우가 생겨요. 예를 들어, 결정한 디자인을 구현하는 데 있어서 기술적인 어려움이 있다는 판단이 들기도 하고, 비용적인 문제, 심지어는 법규와 관련한 문제가 발생할 수 있죠. 문제가 생길 때 기존 디자인을 해치지 않고 이상적인 해결책을 찾아내는 일 또한 DQM에서 해야 할 업무입니다. 한 마디로 내·외장 디자이너가 보석의 원석을 어떻게 가공할지 결정하고 나석으로 만드는 일을 맡는다면, DQM에서 근무하는 디자이너는 가공한 나석이 최대한 돋보이도록 광을 내고, 마무리하고, 깨지지 않게 잘 지키는 역할을 한다고 볼 수 있을 것 같아요. My name is Kyuhwan Kim, and I’m a senior designer. Since joining the company in 2010, I’ve been involved in exterior design projects at the Kia Namyang Design Center. Presently, I’m in charge of design quality for overall exterior designs at Kia Next Design Exterior Group. I think there are a lot of automotive designers who decided on their career paths at an early age, but I dreamed of becoming an automotive designer relatively late in life. When I started university, I was interested in film & video studies as well as advertising, but then one day I met a fellow student who was a bit older than me. He was one of the most thoughtful and insightful designers I had ever talked to. He happened to be majoring in automotive design, so naturally I was intrigued, and that’s how I fell in love with automotive design. Our work is largely divided into two parts. The first is to improve design quality in the later stages of the design process. This involves thinking deeply about how to get the design that was decided upon in design evaluation meetings to stand out even more, making improvements based on those ideas, and verifying the revised design. We repeat this process, and the more we revise and verify, the higher the quality of the final details. The second part of our work is to protect the design that has been refined through the aforementioned process. The stage when a design is decided on is the halfway point of the entire automotive development process. In the next half of the development period or so, a variety of events will inevitably cause the design to be modified. For example, it may be determined that there are technical difficulties in implementing the design, while cost issues or even legal issues might occur. When problems arise, it is also the job of DQM to find the ideal solution without compromising the existing design. In a nutshell, if exterior and interior designers are responsible for deciding how the rough gemstones in a piece of jewelry will be processed and turned into gems, a designer working in DQM is responsible for polishing, finishing, and protecting the gems so that they look their best.

한복 디자이너 김영진 The Passion of Our Hanbok — Youngjin Kim, Hanbok Designer
우리극이 좋아 판소리, 동래학춤, 봉산탈춤을 배우고 극단에 들어간 사람, 해외 럭셔리 브랜드의 슈퍼바이저로 일한 사람, 서울시 무형문화재 11호 고(故) 박선영 침선장에게 배움을 청했던 사람, 오트 쿠튀르와 기성복의 경계를 넘나들며 옷을 만드는 사람. 얼핏 동떨어져 보이는 다양한 사람의 이야기는 ‘김영진’이라는 큰 줄기로 모입니다. 《기아 디자인 매거진》은 경계와 고정관념을 흔들며 한복에 생동을 불어넣은 한복 디자이너 김영진을 만났습니다. 한복을 동시대 패션으로 이끄는 그에게 전통이란 옛것을 고정불변하게 계승하는 일이 아닙니다. 오히려 아름다움을 향해 나아가는 생명체에 가깝죠. 김영진 디자이너는 전통과 패션에 대한 깊은 사유를 통해 동시대 한복이 살아 숨 쉬는 방법을 제시하고 있습니다. 김영진은 우리 시대를 대표하는 한복 디자이너다. 우리극을 하는 극단에서 배우로 활동하며 우리극 소품 만들기를 돕다가 처음 한복을 만났다. 이후 패션업계에 입성해 세계적인 럭셔리 브랜드에서 10여 년간 슈퍼바이저로 일했다. 최고급 수입 원단을 직접 바잉하던 경험은 세계에 산재한 다양한 원단에 눈뜨는 계기가 됐다. 서울시 무형문화재 11호 고(故) 박선영 침선장에게 가르침을 받으며 한복의 원형을 탄탄히 공부하고 시대별 한복을 두루 섭렵한 그는 2004년 맞춤 한복 브랜드 ‘차이 김영진’을 론칭했다. 한복의 멋을 살리면서도 현대적인 개성을 표현하는 차이 김영진은 BTS, 틸다 스윈튼, 정호연 등 국내외 다양한 유명인에게 의뢰받으며 화제를 모았다. 2013년 론칭한 기성 한복 브랜드 ‘차이킴’은 동시대성에 대한 깊은 이해를 바탕으로 패션으로서의 한복이 지닌 가능성을 표출했다. 그는 오페라 〈동백꽃 아가씨〉, 연극 〈햄릿〉, 영화 〈해어화〉, 창극 〈심청가〉 등 다양한 무대 의상을 비롯해 드라마 〈미스터 션샤인〉의 여주인공 배우 김태리의 의상을 연출하며 멈추지 않는 도전 정신을 발휘 중이다. She is someone who fell in love with Korean theater and later joined a theater company after learning pansori. The same person worked as a supervisor for an international luxury brand and implored the late Seonyoung Park, Seoul Intangible Cultural Property No. 11, to teach her traditional Korean sewing. Indeed, this is the very same woman who also creates clothes that straddle the line between haute couture and ready-to-wear garments. The stories of these seemingly disparate people all funnel together into the stream of one person—Youngjin Kim. Kia Design Magazine recently met Kim, a hanbok designer who has vitalized Korean traditional dress by shaking up boundaries and stereotypes. For Kim, who is turning hanbok into contemporary fashion, tradition is not a fixed inheritance of the past but something closer to a living creature that moves towards beauty. Through her profound thoughts on tradition and fashion, designer Youngjin Kim is showing everyone how to bring hanbok to life in today’s world. Youngjin Kim is one of the leading hanbok designers of her time. She first encountered hanbok while working as an actress in a troupe performing Korean theater and helping to make props. She later entered the fashion industry and worked as a global luxury brand supervisor for over a decade. The experience of purchasing the finest imported fabrics opened her eyes to the variety of worldwide materials. She studied under the late Seonyoung Park, a master of traditional sewing, and Seoul’s Intangible Cultural Property No. 11. She gained a solid understanding of the original hanbok, and learned all about hanbok from different historical periods. She ultimately launched her custom-tailored hanbok brand, Tchai Kim Young Jin, in 2004. Tchai Kim Young Jin’s hanbok, which preserves the style of the garment while expressing a contemporary personality, has been commissioned by various Korean and international celebrities, including BTS, Tilda Swinton, and Jung Ho-yeon. Launched in 2013, her ready-to-wear hanbok brand, Tchai Kim, expresses the potential of hanbok as a fashion based on a deep understanding of contemporaneity. Youngjin Kim has shown a seemingly ceaseless groundbreaking spirit in her design of myriad stage costumes for the opera La Traviata, the play Hamlet, the movie Love, Lies, and the puppet show Simcheongga, as well as costumes for the actress Kim Tae-ri, the lead actress in the drama Mr. Sunshine.

400년 전통의 양구 백토를 사용해 백자를 만드는 이인화 작가, 3D 프린팅 기술을 활용해 디지털 크래프트를 선보이는 류종대 작가. 두 공예 작가의 인터뷰를 통해 이들의 작업에 담긴 ‘상반된 개념의 창의적 융합(Opposites United)’을 발견해 보세요. 이인화는 서울대학교 미술대학 공예과에서 도예를 전공하고 동 대학원에서 석사 과정을 마쳤다. 2015년 청주국제공예비엔날레 국제공모전 대상, 2018년 문화체육관광부 장관상인 ‘오늘의 젊은 예술가상’을 수상했다. 창덕궁 규장각, 아모레퍼시픽 뮤지엄, 양구백자박물관, 런던 빅토리아 앤 앨버트 뮤지엄(V&A), 로마 교황청 등에서 작품을 영구 소장 중이다. 현재 강원도 양구에 위치한 스튜디오 소만에서 백자의 ‘투광성’을 주제로 다양한 작업을 하고 있다. 류종대는 디자인 스튜디오 크레아포트의 대표로 현재 홍익대학교 목조형가구학과 겸임 교수이자 이탈리아 A’ Design Awards의 심사위원을 맡고 있다. 목공예와 아트 퍼니처를 전공하고, 요트 디자인 등 산업 디자인 영역에서도 활동해 왔다. 2017년 일본 ‘마루누마 아트파크Marunuma Art Park’에서 개인전을 연 것을 시작으로 3D 프린팅 등 디지털 기술을 활용한 ‘디지털 크래프트digital craft’ 작업을 선보이고 있다. 2022년 문화체육관광부 장관상인 ‘오늘의 젊은 예술가상’을 수상했다. 공예에 대한 관심이 높아지는 요즘, 작가들의 재료와 기법도 다채롭게 확장 중입니다. 강원도 양구의 아름다운 자연에 둘러싸여 양구 백토를 연구해 온 이인화 작가는 변화하는 빛을 투과하는 백자의 투광성을 주제로 작업합니다. 반면, 3D 프린터로 다양한 작품을 제작하는 류종대 작가는 공예란 영역에 질문을 던지며 새로운 기술을 적극적으로 활용합니다. 각자 재료를 실험하며 자기만의 작업 세계를 일구는 두 공예 작가의 이야기에서 바로 지금, 현시대의 공예가 나아가는 방향성을 엿볼 수 있습니다. Inhwa Lee makes white porcelain using 400-year-old white clay from Yanggu, and Jongdae Ryu presents digital craft works using 3D printing technology. Through interviews with these two craft artists, discover the concept of Opposites United contained in their work. Inhwa Lee majored in ceramics through the Department of Crafts at Seoul National University’s College of Fine Arts, and went on to complete her MFA at the graduate school of the same university. In 2015, she won the Grand Prize at the Cheongju International Craft Competition, and in 2018 she received the Young Artist of the Year Award from the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Her works are in the permanent collections of Changdeokgung Gyujanggak (Royal Library), Amorepacific Museum, Yanggu Porcelain Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Holy See in Rome. She is currently working on a wide range of works under the theme of light transmission in white porcelain at Studio Soman in Yanggu. Jongdae Ryu is the CEO of the design studio Crea Port, an adjunct professor at Hongik University’s Department of Woodworking and Furniture Design, and a jury member of the A’ Design Award in Italy. He majored in woodworking and art furniture, and has also been active in the field of industrial design, including yacht design. Since his solo exhibition at Marunuma Art Park in Japan in 2017, Ryu has been presenting digital craft works utilizing digital technologies, such as 3D printing. In 2022, he was awarded the Young Artist of the Year Award by the Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism. As the public’s interest in crafts grows, artists are expanding their materials and techniques in many different ways. Surrounded by the beautiful nature of Yanggu, Gangwon-do, Inhwa Lee has been studying the white clay of Yanggu for quite some time, and works under the theme of white porcelain’s light transmission, which allows changing light to penetrate porcelain. Jongdae Ryu, on the other hand, produces a variety of works with a 3D printer, and questions the boundaries of crafts while often utilizing new technologies. The stories of these two craft artists, each experimenting with materials and creating their own worlds, provide a glimpse into where crafts is headed today.

아트워크, 환대로서의 전시 Artworks as a Medium, an Exhibition as Hospitality
요즘 유행인 챗GPT에게 물어봤다. “기아의 디자인 철학은 뭐니?” 똑똑한 챗GPT는 이내 자신있게 헛발질을 찼다. “The Power to Surprise입니다.” 없던 말을 지어낸 건 아니다. 2005년 수립한 기아의 브랜드 슬로건이니까. 2021년 기아자동차가 사명을 기아로 바꾸고 브랜드 슬로건 또한 ‘Movement that inspires’로 변경했다는 사실을 생각하면 조금 기가 막히지만. 틀렸다고 핀잔을 주며 다시 한번 채근해본다. “2021년 새롭게 정립한 기아의 디자인 철학은 뭐니?” 이제야 마음에 드는 답이 나온다. “Opposites United입니다.” 좋아! 그러면 심화 질문을 해볼까. “Opposites United를 구성하는 5 Pillars는 뭐야?” 다시 꼬이기 시작하는 챗GPT. 분명 다섯 가지 필라를 말하라고 했는데 가짓수도 빼먹고, 그 명칭도 각양각색이다. 아! 현재 무료로 이용가능한 챗GPT의 기억은 2021년 9월이 마지막이니, 2021년 3월 15일에 발표한 기아 디자인 철학에 대해 깊이 있게 습득할 여력이 없을 수도 있다. 그래서 챗GPT의 대항마인 구글의 ‘바드Bard’에게 똑같이 질문을 던져봤다. 근데 이 아이도 Opposites United까지는 맞추는데 심화 질문으로 들어가니 챗GPT보다 더 가관이구나. 결국 도긴개긴이다. 이런 인공지능의 행태를 멍청하다 치부할 수도 있겠지만, 사실 이건 엄연히 불공정한 요구다. 한 브랜드의 디자인 철학에 대해 명확하게 말하는 건 불가능하기 때문이다. 물론 이미 공식적으로 발표한 핵심 키워드는 파악해서 읊을 수 있겠지만 이에 대해 설명하는 내용은 신기루나 다름없다. 동일한 질문 앞에서 우리 인간의 머리도 백지장이 되지 않던가. 오히려 막힘 없이 요약할 수 있다면 그야말로 더욱 무서운 일이다. 단선적으로 파악되는 철학에는 생명력이 없다. 확장가능성 또한 존재하지 않는다. 디자인을 고민하는 입장에서는 크리에이티브가 철저히 봉쇄되고, 디자인을 바라보는 입장에서는 예측가능해 더 이상 흥미가 끌리지 않으니까. 오히려 헛발 차는 인공지능이 고마울 따름이다. 디자인 철학을 날카로운 언어로 재단할 수 없다면 결국 이를 이해하는 방법은 하나뿐이다. 감각적으로 경험하는 것이다. 알듯 말듯한 내러티브와 다양한 시각 요소로 구성한 디자인 매니페스토 영상을 만든 이유도 여기에 있으며, 2021년 열린 광주디자인비엔날레 기아관에 조심스럽게 등장한 상징적인 오브제들도 같은 맥락이다. 작년 동대문디자인플라자(DDP)에서 열린 기아 디자인 철학 전시를 통해 Opposites United와 다섯 가지 필라에 대해 공감각적으로 체험하는 장을 연출한 것도 연장선 상에 있다. I asked the smarty pants ChatGPT, “What is Kia’s design philosophy?” Without hesitation, it blurted out the wrong answer confidently: “The Power to Surprise.” ChatGPT did not make this up—that actually was Kia’s 2005 brand slogan. That being said, it does seem a little crazy when you consider that Kia Motors changed its name to Kia and its brand slogan to “Movement that inspires” in 2021. I came down on ChatGPT for getting it wrong and told it to try again. “What was Kia’s new design philosophy in 2021?” Only then did I get the answer I was looking for: “Opposites United.” Great! Then I asked a more detailed question: “What are the five pillars that make up Opposites United?” ChatGPT started to stumble again. I asked it to name the five pillars, but it did not know what they were, and instead gave me a bunch of different phrases. Since the last free-of-charge ChatGPT memory is to September 2021, it may not have had time to learn more about Kia’s design philosophy, which was announced on March 15, 2021, so I asked the same question to Google’s Bard, ChatGPT’s competition. Although Bard answered Opposites United, when it moved on to in-depth questions, it was even worse than ChatGPT. In the end, the two AI chatbots were not that different. You might call this AI behavior flat-out stupid, but it was actually an unfair request, as it seems impossible to articulate a brand’s design philosophy. Sure, AI can identify and recite the key words that have already been officially announced, but explaining them is something closer to a mirage. Even our own human minds often go blank when faced with the same question. To be honest, it would be all the more frightening if AI could summarize Kia’s design philosophy smoothly. By the same token, any philosophy that can be explained in one single way has no real substance to it; there is no scalability in it, either. As a design thinker, creativity is locked down, and as a design viewer, it is predictable and no longer interesting. In fact, I am grateful that AI makes mistakes. If a design philosophy cannot be described using smart language, there is only one way to understand it, which is to experience it through your senses—that is why we created a design manifesto video with a non-straightforward narrative and a variety of visual elements. In the same context, a number of iconic objects carefully appeared in the Kia Pavilion at the Gwangju Design Biennale in 2021. In line with this, last year’s exhibition regarding Kia’s design philosophy at Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) created a synaesthetic experience of Opposites United and its five pillars.

저는 기아디자인모델개발실 VR랩에서 디자인 비주얼라이징을 담당하는 정재원 책임연구원입니다. 입사 이래 계속 지금의 업무를 맡아왔고, 아마 퇴사할 때까지 지속하지 않을까 생각합니다. 속된 말로 ‘고인물’인 것 같지만, (웃음) 나름 트렌드에 뒤처지지 않으려고 관련 산업 동향을 항상 민감하게 체크합니다. 아마도 제가 가장 자신 있는 부분은 검색인 것 같아요. 궁금한 게 있을 때마다 검색하는데, 원하는 정보를 상당히 잘 찾는 편입니다. 저희 VR랩은 각 멤버의 능력이 뛰어나서 딱히 누가 이끌어간다는 느낌은 없어요. 저는 멤버가 즐겁게 일할 수 있게 도와주는 역할을 하고 있다고 생각합니다. 저희는 기아 디자인센터 내에서 진행하는 CG 작업 대부분을 수행하고 있습니다. 3D 데이터를 활용한 렌더링, 실시간 리뷰 및 품평 콘텐츠 제작, 진행 등이 대표적이죠. 또한 비주얼 관련 신기술 연구 및 투자도 진행합니다. 디자인센터에 계신 많은 분이 동감하시겠지만, 최근 몇 년 사이에 프로젝트가 꾸준히 늘면서 업무 영역도 함께 넓어지는 터라 고민이 많습니다. 디자인 프로세스를 디지털로 전환하니까 3D 데이터가 매일 쏟아져 나오네요. 디지털 기반의 디자인 프로세스를 가리켜 DDD(Data Driven Design)라고 부릅니다. 차량의 3D 데이터가 만들어지면 저희 VR랩에서 예쁘게 꽃단장해서 여기저기 활용가능한 콘텐츠로 가공합니다. 저희가 마지막 단계의 업무를 하고 있기에 주목받는 경우가 많지만, 기본적으로 좋은 디자인과 고품질의 3D 모델링이 선행되어야 작업이 가능합니다. 모두 짐작하시다시피 버추얼 모델 활용의 가장 큰 장점은 시간과 비용의 절감입니다. 또한 디자인 용이성도 높아지죠. 피지컬 모델과 비교해 디자인 숙성 과정이 더 빠르고 쉽습니다. 피지컬 기반 모델 제작에는 많은 리소스가 필요하지만, 버추얼 기반 모델의 경우 사무실에 앉아서도 진행할 수 있어요. 리뷰 단계에서도 원하는 시점, 투시 등을 자유롭게 돌려보고 관련 자료도 빠르게 비교할 수 있는 점도 이점입니다. I’m Chaiwon Chung, a senior researcher in charge of design visualization at the Kia Design Model Development Group VR Lab. I’ve been in my current role since I joined the company, and I think I’ll probably be here until I retire. I feel like I’m an old hand at what I do (laughs), but I always keep up with industry trends to stay ahead of the curve. The thing I’m probably most confident about is searching—whenever I have a question, I go searching, and I’m pretty good at finding what I’m looking for. Each member at our VR Lab is very capable, so I don’t feel like there’s one specific person who leads it. I think my role is to help the members of the lab enjoy their work. The VR Lab performs most of the CG work done inside the Kia Design Center. This includes using 3D data so that we can create renderings and content for real-time review and evaluation. In addition, we also conduct research and investment in new technologies related to visuals. As I’m sure many people in the Kia Design Center would agree, the number of projects we work on has been steadily increasing in recent years, with the scope of our work expanding as well. This means I always have a lot on my mind. Since we’re digitizing our design process, we’re bombarded with 3D data on a daily basis. We call this process Data Driven Design (DDD). Once we have the 3D data of a vehicle, we make it look more attractive in our VR Lab and process it into content that can be used wherever need be. We get a lot of attention because we end up working on the last step, but good design and high-quality 3D modeling should also precede our work. As everyone can probably guess, the biggest advantage of using virtual models is the time and money it saves. These digital-based virtual models also make designing easier. Compared to physical models, the design maturation process is faster and easier. Creating a physical model requires a lot of resources, but with a virtual model, you can even do it at your desk in the office. During the review phase as well, you can freely test all the different viewpoints and perspectives that you want, and quickly compare related materials.

In 2020, when the movie Parasite became the first non-English-language film to win the Academy Award for best picture, there was one person who stood in the spotlight alongside director Bong Joon Ho—the film’s subtitle translator, Darcy Paquet. Bong once said of Parasite, “I think only Koreans are able to understand 100 percent of it.” And indeed, the movie is full of expressions that require a knowledge of and experience in Korean culture, such as chapaguri (ram-don), Seoul National University, banjiha (semi-basement), and suseok (viewing stones). Darcy Paquet deftly brought these words to life through their English translation. In fact, except for Okja, Paquet has translated all of Bong’s films and has been responsible for creating a linguistic bridge between Korean cinema and foreign audiences for well over 100 films, ranging from Park Chan-wook’s The Handmaiden and Decision to Leave, to decidedly Korean commercial films like The Age of Shadows and Ode to My Father, to independent films like The World of Us. In this interview, Kia Design Magazine explores the many hats Darcy Paquet wears, not only as a subtitle translator, but also as a cinephile who sincerely cares about Korean cinema, a film critic, and a film festival organizer who promotes Korean independent films. It’s easy to tell through nothing more than his voice, which was filled with heartfelt sincerity in this interview, how much he genuinely cares about Korean cinema, something he’s been enjoying for over 20 years. Darcy Paquet is a subtitle translator and film critic who has lived in South Korea since 1997. After steadily introducing Korean films to international cinephiles through his website koreanfilm.org, he became more intimately involved in the Korean film industry when he was commissioned by the Korean Film Council to oversee the English translation of publicity materials and subtitles for Korean films. Having gained a deeper understanding of Korean culture through its cinema, Paquet has played a major role in the globalization of Korean films by translating and supervising the English subtitles of almost 200 films, including Memories of Murder, The Handmaiden, Parasite, and Decision to Leave. He has also established himself as a leading film journalist and critic, having written news stories, columns and professional reviews of Korean films for Screen International, Variety, and Cine21. He is currently a professor at Busan Asian Film School, a programmer at the Far East Film Festival in Udine, Italy—Europe’s largest film festival dedicated to Asian cinema—and the founder and organizer of the Wildflower Film Festival, the first festival in Korea to discover outstanding independent and low-budget Korean films.

Heemoon Lee is a sorikkun (professional singer of Korean traditional music) in the field of Gyeonggi minyo (folk songs of the Seoul and Gyeonggi area). Over the years, he has not let himself be limited to traditional music but has instead tried to forge a path forward in a complex genre and continue making a new and original repertoire of music. WoongSan is a jazz vocalist who recently released her monumental 10th album—and her first one to incorporate Korean traditional music. We invite you to gain greater insight into “Opposites United” through these two musicians, both of whom fuse opposite elements as they expand their music world in brilliant new directions. Heemoon Lee is a certified trainee in Gyeonggi minyo, National Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 57, and the son of Gyeonggi minyo master Ko Jurang. He majored in film production and directed music videos before starting his professional career as a singer at the age of 27 after following the advice of Master Lee Chun-hee. Based on a long, distinguished tradition, Heemoon Lee pursues music that crosses the borders of different genres. Lee was the recipient of the President’s Award at the 16th National Folk Song Competition in the comprehensive category in 2010, the Folk Song Award at the 2014 KBS Traditional Music Awards, and the 23rd Young Artist Award in 2015. He also received a commendation from the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism at the National Gugak Center in 2021 and from the Seoul Culture Awards in 2021. WoongSan made her debut in the jazz club scene in 1996, releasing her first album in 2003. She is the first Korean to be invited to Japanese Billboard Live and Blue Note Tokyo, two of Japan’s most noteworthy jazz venues. She won the Best Jazz & Crossover Song Award/Album Award at the Korean Music Awards in 2008, and was the first Korean award winner of the Golden Disc from Japanese notable jazz magazine Swing Journal in 2010. She was also selected as the Best Vocalist by Reader’s Poll magazine in 2008 and 2015. Later, she received a Prime Minister’s commendation at the Korean Popular Culture and Arts Awards in 2021. Currently, she is the third chairperson of the Korea Jazz Association.

2023년 새해부터 루이 비통과의 협업으로 세상을 떠들썩하게 만든 아티스트 쿠사마 야요이(草間彌生). 올해 93세라는 나이가 믿기지 않을 만큼 아직도 매일 그림을 그리며 왕성하게 활동하는 그의 회고전 《야요이 쿠사마: 1945년부터 현재》가 지금 홍콩의 M+에서 열리고 있다. ‘미술관 이상의 미술관(More than Museum)’이라는 의미의 M+는 아시아 최대 규모의 시각문화 뮤지엄으로 근·현대미술, 건축, 디자인, 영화에 이르기까지 광범위한 컬렉션을 소장 중이다. 무려 15년 동안 준비해 팬데믹이 한창이던 2021년 11월 개관하며 화제를 모았다. 총면적 6만 5000㎡(전시 공간 1만 7000㎡)의 압도적인 규모를 자랑하는 M+에서 열린 이번 전시의 출품작은 200여 점. 쿠사마의 초기작부터 전시 시작 직전에 완성한 신작 12점까지 아우르는 규모는 일본을 제외하고 아시아에서 열린 그의 전시 중 가장 장대하다. ‘쿠사마 야요이’ 하면 자연스럽게 폴카 도트Polka Dot 형태의 물방울무늬 호박 조형물과 무한 거울 방의 모습이 떠오른다. 그러나 전시를 기획한 M+의 정도련 부관장은 “대중적으로도, 국제적으로도 널리 알려진 물방울무늬 호박은 빙산의 일각에 불과하다”고 잘라 말한다. 전시팀은 “쿠사마는 대체 누구인가”라는 질문을 새롭게 품었다. 이번 회고전에 협력 큐레이터이자 독립 기획자로 참여한 미카 요시타케(Yoshitake Mika)는 그 답변을 이렇게 정의했다. “그의 존재는 모든 것을 대변한다.” From the start of the new year in 2023, artist Yayoi Kusama had people talking around the world about her collaboration with Louis Vuitton. She is still very active, painting every day despite being an unbelievable 94 years of age. Her retrospective exhibition, Yayoi Kusama: 1945 to Now, is currently being held at M+ in Hong Kong. The name M+ comes from the concept of being a “Museum and More.” Today, it is the largest museum of visual culture in Asia, with an extensive collection that spans everything from modern and contemporary art to architecture, design, and film. It has attracted attention since it opened in November 2021, in the middle of the pandemic, and after 15 years of preparation. The exhibition, which is taking place at M+ and its overwhelming structure area of 65,000 m² (17,000 m² of exhibition space), features over 200 works, ranging from Kusama’s early works to 12 new pieces completed just before the exhibition. This is the largest exhibition of Kusama’s in Asia outside Japan. When you hear the name “Yayoi Kusama,” many people naturally think of her pumpkin sculptures, polka dot patterns, and infinite mirror room. However, Doryun Chong, deputy director and chief curator at M+, firmly says “What we see and what we celebrate internationally, polka dot and pumpkin, is just the little tip of the iceberg” when it comes to the legendary Japanese artist. The exhibition team there had a new question: “Who is Kusama?” Mika Yoshitake, who participated in the retrospective as a co-curator and independent planner, offered this answer: “Kusama is many things.”

제 이름은 보웬 주Bowen Zhou입니다. 우리 삶에 희망과 즐거움을 더하는 디지털 경험을 디자인하고 있어요. 기아에서 인턴을 하기 전에는 로드아일랜드디자인스쿨(RISD)에서 산업디자인과 조각을 공부했습니다. 재학 중 NASA에 증강 현실 소프트웨어를 제공하는 팀을 이끌기도 했고, 현대자동차 프로젝트에 참여하며 미래의 도시 풍경을 만들기도 했어요. 브라운 스페이스 엔지니어링Brown Space Engineering의 지상 소프트웨어 팀에서 일한 경험도 있답니다. 예전 현대자동차 프로젝트에 참여했을 때 매 순간이 너무나 좋았어요! 가까운 미래를 진지하게 상상하면서 그곳과 사람의 연결 경로를 설계하는 경험은 쉽게 얻을 수 없잖아요. 게다가 미국에 사는 입장에서 지구 반대편인 한국으로부터 도착하는 피드백을 적용해 디자인하는 경험은 무척 신기했어요. 그래서 기아에서 인턴으로 일할 기회가 찾아왔을 때 결코 놓치지 않겠다고 생각했죠. 기아 퓨처 디자인실에서 인턴을 하면서 그로잉카의 개념을 정의하고, 커뮤니티 성장의 매개체로 모빌리티를 재해석했어요. 최근 들어 교통은 종종 사람들의 생활권을 분리하고 자원의 불균등한 분배와 불평등에 관한 문제를 야기하고 있습니다. 저는 가까운 미래에 모빌리티가 서로의 삶을 떨어뜨리기보다 사회적으로 지속가능한 커뮤니티 기능을 제공하는 방법을 제안했어요. 그 결과인 그로잉카는 공간에 대한 이웃의 사회적 요구와 변화에 대응하면서 사회적 성장을 촉진하는 ‘살아있는 기계’를 의미해요. 최종 단계에서는 커뮤니티의 건전한 성장을 촉진하는 핵심 요소가 어떤 모습이고, 서로 어떻게 상호작용할 수 있는지에 대한 시스템 개념을 정립하고, 그 비전을 특정하는 구성 요소를 현실화하는 프로토타입을 분석하는 전략을 짰습니다. I’m Bowen Zhou, I design digital experiences to empower this hope and exhilaration for living in others. Before interning at Kia, I studied industrial design and sculpture at RISD. There, I led a team to deliver augmented reality software to NASA, created future cityscapes for Hyundai Motors, and worked on the ground software team at Brown Space Engineering. I loved every second at Hyundai Motors. It’s not often that we get the freedom to seriously imagine possible futures and design pathways that would bridge us there. It was also amazing that I got to design with feedback coming from the other side of the world! Needless to say, when there was an opportunity to intern at Kia, I jumped on the wagon. During my internship at Kia Future Design team, I defined the concept of the “growing car” and reimagined mobility as an agent for community growth. Current transportation often separates living zones and causes unequal resource distribution and inequality. My design proposed a near future where mobility serves a community function by creating social sustainability instead of segregating lives. In this proposal, a “growing car” is defined as a living machine that promotes social growth by responding to the changing spatial social needs of the neighborhood. My final deliverables were the mission strategy which breaks down key elements we need to focus on to promote healthy growth in a community, a system concept for what a “growing machine” could look like and how they can interact with one another, and physical prototypes that materialize specific components of the vision.

셰프 권우중 The Unknown World of Korean Food — Woojoong Kwon, Chef
한식 파인다이닝 레스토랑 ‘권숙수’의 오너 셰프, 권우중. 유명 이북 음식점을 운영한 외가(外家)의 손맛을 이어받은 한식 요리사, 대기업 소속 한식 레스토랑 총괄 셰프, 그리고 지금 미쉐린 2스타 레스토랑 셰프에 이르기까지 그를 설명하는 다양한 수식어가 존재합니다. 《기아 디자인 매거진》은 철학을 담아 한식에 몰두하는 창작자의 모습에 주목했습니다. 한식의 고급화를 지향하는 권우중 셰프에게 고급문화란 그저 값비싼 것을 의미하지 않습니다. 인간으로서, 창작자로서의 예술혼이 담긴 문화죠. 그는 우리 먹거리에 대한 깊은 이해를 바탕으로, 조명받지 못했던 전통문화를 재해석해 독특하고 아름다운 음식으로 창작합니다. 권우중은 대한민국을 대표하는 한식 셰프다. 이북 요리에 일가견이 있는 집안에서 태어나 한식을 맛보고, 배우며 자랐다. 경희대학교 조리학과를 졸업한 뒤, 웨스턴 조선 서울에서 요리사로서의 첫 커리어를 시작했다. 이후 일본과 뉴욕의 레스토랑에서 헤드 셰프로 일하며 선진 미식 문화를 접했고, 세계 속 ‘한식’의 현실을 마주했다. 한국으로 돌아온 권우중은 CJ푸드빌 한식 총괄 셰프로 R&D를 지휘하면서 ‘이스트빌리지’의 오너 셰프로 활동했고, 이때의 경험과 시행착오를 발판으로 2015년 한식 파인다이닝 레스토랑 ‘권숙수’를 열었다. 궁중에서 음식을 담당하는 남성 전문 요리사를 뜻하는 ‘숙수(熟手)’라는 명칭을 레스토랑에 차용한 그는 열렬히 꿈꿔온 한식의 고급화를 추구하며 한국에 처음으로 도입한 ‘미쉐린 가이드 서울 2017’에서 2스타를 받았고, 이후 7년 연속 그 명성을 지키고 있다. 2016년 세계 최고 요리 행사 ‘마드리드 퓨전’에서 우리나라를 대표해 한식을 소개했고, 청와대 국빈 행사 자문역을 맡은 바 있다. Woojoong Kwon is the chef-owner of the Korean fine dining restaurant Kwonsooksoo. There are any number of ways to describe Kwon, from a Korean chef who inherited the skills of his mother’s family that ran a famous restaurant specializing in North Korean dishes, to the head chef at a Korean restaurant belonging to a large company, to now a chef of a restaurant with two Michelin stars. Kia Design Magazine wanted to shine the spotlight on a creator who immerses himself philosophically in Korean food. For Chef Kwon, who aims to upgrade Korean food, luxury culture does not just mean something expensive. Rather, it is a culture inspired by the artistic spirit of a human being and of a creator. Based on his deep understanding of Korean food, Chef Kwon is not only reinterpreting a traditional culture that, to date, has not been illuminated very much but is also creating uniquely beautiful food. Woojoong Kwon is one of the most noteworthy Korean cuisine chefs who best represents Korea. Born into a family with experience in cooking North Korean dishes, Kwon grew up tasting and learning all about Korean food. After graduating from Kyung Hee University’s Department of Culinary Science, he started his career as a chef at the Westin Chosun Seoul. He then worked as the head chef at restaurants in Japan and New York, experiencing advanced culinary cultures and seeing for himself the reality of Korean food around the world. After returning to Korea, Kwon led R&D efforts as CJ Foodville’s Korean food executive chef and worked as a chef-owner at a restaurant named East Village in Seoul. Using that experience and trial-and-error approach from those days as a stepping stone, he opened the Korean fine dining restaurant Kwonsooksoo in 2015. He adopted the name “sooksu,” a term given to a male specialty chef in charge of the kitchen at the royal court, for his restaurant. After passionately pursuing the enhancement of Korean food for some time, he was awarded two stars in the MICHELIN Guide Seoul 2017, the first time the world-famous restaurant guide was published in Korea, and has maintained that reputation for seven consecutive years. In 2016, he represented Korea and introduced Korean food at Madrid Fusion, the world’s top culinary event. He has also served as a consultant for state guest events at the Blue House.

Breaking with stereotypes from the past, Danha, the hanbok designer at Maison Danha, has come up with a new hanbok for today’s world. Minju Kim, a fashion designer at the brand MINJUKIM, offers original concepts and stories based on detailed, in-depth research. Through the artistic balance of these two designers, both of whom express Korean things in a global way, we are given a unique glimpse into the wisdom behind KIA’s “Opposites United” philosophy. Since launching Maison Danha in 2018, Danha has been garnering a lot of attention with her new interpretation of tradition as a hanbok designer. In 2020, K-pop artists BLACKPINK appeared in a music video wearing outfits from Maison Danha, drawing worldwide interest in hanbok. In 2021, she was selected as the Hanbok Person of the Year, a commendation given out by the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Recently, Danha showed her hanbok collection at Paris Fashion Week, and received favorable reviews from many people and media outlets. Minju Kim is the founder of a contemporary womenswear brand launched in 2015 called MINJUKIM. After receiving her master’s degree at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp in Belgium, she won the 2013 H&M Design Award, and was shortlisted for the LVMH Prize for Young Fashion Designers in 2014. In 2020, Kim was named the winner of Netflix’s reality show and fashion design competition Next in Fashion, emerging as an internationally renowned designer. A year later, in 2021, Kim won a commendation from the Minister of Trade, Industry, and Energy at the Korea Fashion Awards.

이후의 한류 Hallyu after Hallyu 3.0
영국 런던에 위치한 빅토리아 앤 알버트 뮤지엄(이하 V&A)에서 의외의 전시가 열리고 있다. 이름부터 그 취지가 선명한 《한류 1)! 더 코리안 웨이브Hallyu! The Korean Wave》다. V&A는 1851년 만국박람회의 성과를 기념하며 설립한 뮤지엄이다. 그 역사가 증명하듯 장식미술, 디자인, 퍼포먼스 등에 집중해 인류학적 관점으로 유물을 수집, 보존, 전시하는 유구함을 자랑한다. 이런 역사적 배경과 명확한 지향점을 가진 뮤지엄에서 ‘한류’를 주제로 전시를 기획했다는 소식을 듣자마자 물음표가 한 가득 떠올랐다. “현재 진행형의 흐름인 한류가 어떻게 V&A의 전시 주제가 될 수 있었을까? 한류가 전시할 만큼의 실체를 가진 것이었단 말인가?” 이런 질문의 바탕에는 어쩌면 한류에 관해 어딘가 모르게 어색하게 느껴왔던 마음이 있었는지도 모른다. 이따금 뉴스를 통해 들려오는 한국영화, 감독, 배우의 해외 수상 소식, 국내에서 제작한 넷플릭스 오리지널 드라마에 대한 국제적인 열광, K팝 아티스트의 폭발적인 인기까지, 소위 ‘국위선양’이라고 좋아할 만한 소식은 왠지 가깝고도 멀게 느껴졌던 게 사실이다. 지난 9월 ‘프리즈Frieze’ 아트 페어가 서울에 성공적으로 론칭하고, 해외 유명 갤러리가 줄지어 서울 지점을 내는 등 세계 미술계에서도 한국이 부쩍 주목받는 것을 체감하지만, 그럼에도 불구하고 한류는 손에 잡히지 않는 단어였다. 그래서 더 궁금했다. 한국인이 아닌 이들이 한국이 아닌 곳에서 열리는 전시를 통해 한류를 어떻게 해석하고 있을까. The Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) is holding an unexpected exhibition, Hallyu! 1)The Korean Wave, and one which clearly reveals its purpose through its title. The V&A is a museum that was established as the “Museum of Manufactures” in 1852, commemorating the achievement of the 1851 World’s Fair in London. Since then it has boasted a distinguished history of collecting, preserving, and exhibiting artifacts from a cultural and anthropological perspective by focusing on decorative art and design. As soon as I heard that this exhibition was planned under the theme of “hallyu”—and at a museum with such an acclaimed background and with a clear goal in mind—many questions came to mind, including “How could the presently ongoing trend of hallyu be the subject of an exhibition at the V&A?” as well as “Does that mean hallyu has enough substance to it for an entire exhibit?” Perhaps there was a feeling of awkwardness about hallyu driving these questions. It is true that so-called “national prestige enhancing” news, such as the occasional news of Korean films, directors, and actors winning awards abroad, international enthusiasm for locally produced Netflix original dramas, and the explosive popularity of K-pop artists, felt both close and distant to me at the same time. After the Frieze Art Fair was successfully launched in Seoul in September 2022, a number of famous overseas galleries opened branches in Korea’s capital city. As such, it was clear that Korea had gained more recognition in the global art world, yet hallyu remained a concept that Koreans could not fully wrap their heads around. That is why I was so curious about how non-Koreans would interpret hallyu through an exhibition held outside of Korea.

제 이름은 쉬제밍입니다. 기아 상하이 어드밴스드 디자인센터에서 시니어 외장 디자이너를 맡고 있습니다. 상하이에 있기 전에는 기아 유럽 디자인센터에서 7년 동안 일했어요. 거의 10년간 해외에서 살다 보니 고향과 문화가 정말 그립더라고요. 그래서 상하이에서 일해보지 않겠냐는 회사의 제안에 YES라고 명확하게 말했답니다. 제가 맡은 업무는 크게 두 가지로 나눌 수 있을 것 같아요. 첫 번째는 중국 시장의 동향을 조사하고 분석해서 미래 중국 시장에 어울릴 만한 프리미엄 제품 안을 설계하는 거예요. 일종의 실험이나 사전 연구라고 할 수 있죠. 두 번째는 디자인 스튜디오의 역할이에요. 상하이에 있는 기아 디자인센터도 기아의 글로벌 제품 디자인의 모든 과정에 참여합니다. 그래서 다른 지역의 디자인 센터와 선의의 경쟁과 협력을 지속하며 자동차 외관 디자인 개발에 힘을 보태고 있습니다. OU는 디자이너가 기아 브랜드를 위해 함께 일하고 생각하는 지침을 제공한다고 생각해요. 디자이너는 각자 자신만의 아이디어와 취향을 가지고 있죠. 그래서 이들의 제안을 통합하고 적절한 디자인을 선택할 수 있도록 돕는 일이 매우 중요합니다. 기아의 고객에게 명확한 브랜드 이미지와 정체성을 전달하기 위해서는 디자이너 또한 기아만의 디자인 철학을 구축할 필요가 있어요. My name is Xu Zheming, and now I am working in Kia Shanghai advance design center as an exterior Designer. Before I started working in Shanghai, I had 7 years working experience in Kia Europe Design Center. As a Chinese person, after almost 10 years living abroad I really miss my hometown and culture, So when the company offered me a chance to work in Shanghai, I had a very clear answer. I think the idea of “opposites united” offers designers a guide to work and think together for the Kia brand, when every designer has their own idea and taste, how to unified all the proposals or help us make design selection is very important. We want Kia design to deliver a very clear brand image and identity to our customer, so we need to build up our own design philosophy. My work includes two main parts. One is researching and analyzing Chinese market trends to design some advanced product proposal about the future Chinese market. It is more like an experiment or advanced study. On the other side as a design studio, Shanghai design center participates in the Kia globe product design process, cooperating or competing with other studios to develop the exterior of Kia cars.

《기아 디자인 매거진》은 ‘웹툰계의 초통령’으로 불리는 나승훈 작가를 만났습니다. 스토리 작가 신태훈과 함께 13년째 연재 중인 〈놓지마 정신줄〉은 병맛, 일상, 판타지, 블랙 코미디, 옴니버스 장르를 아우르는 독특한 웹툰입니다. 그가 구사하는 단순하고도 선명한 유머는 기아 디자인 철학 ‘오퍼짓 유나이티드Opposites United’를 지탱하는 다섯 개의 기둥 중 하나인 ‘이유 있는 즐거운 경험(Joy for Reason)’을 떠올리게 합니다. 그가 펼치는 유머의 미니멀리즘과 K콘텐츠로 각광받는 웹툰의 세계를 나란히 살펴봅니다. ‘월드 와이드 웹World Wide Web’과 ‘카툰Cartoon’, 즉 웹과 만화를 결합한 ‘웹툰Webtoon’은 한국어 고유명사다. 인터넷 보급이 활발하던 2000년에 들어 천리안에서 만든 조어에 기반을 두고 있다. 밀레니엄을 기점으로 출판 만화 시장은 빠른 속도로 웹툰 플랫폼으로 전환했다. 출판사에서 주최하는 공모전이 거의 유일한 데뷔 루트였던 시대에 마땅한 플랫폼 없이 홀로 만화를 그리던 작가들은 자신의 블로그를 신규 플랫폼 삼아 만화를 올리며 온라인 계정의 닉네임으로 이름을 알리기 시작했다. 이때가 불과 20여 년 전이라는 점을 생각해보면, 지금 한국의 웹툰 시장은 눈부시게 성장을 거듭 중이다. 잠깐의 여유 시간과 인터넷에 접속할 기기만 있다면 언제 어디서든 웹툰을 볼 수 있기 때문이다. 게다가 애니메이션, 드라마, 영화, 게임으로 각색되어 세대와 국가를 가리지 않고 인기를 누리는 일이 비일비재하다. 콘텐츠 접근성과 다른 장르와의 연계 및 확장가능성이 유연한 웹툰은 이제 명실공히 한류의 최전방에 선 영역 중 하나가 되었다. 나승훈은 웹툰 작가다. 국민대학교 시각디자인학과에 재학 중이던 2009년부터 네이버웹툰에 연재를 시작한 웹툰 〈놓지마 정신줄〉은 지난 2019년 시즌 2를 마무리하며 지금까지 29억 뷰에 달하는 누적 조회수를 달성했고, 2022년 11월부터 시즌 3 연재를 재개했다. 동명의 애니메이션과 웹드라마로 만들어졌고, 학습 만화 시리즈 『놓지 마 과학!』은 현재 17권까지 발행돼 판매 부수 100만부를 돌파했으며 『놓지 마 초등 영단어』, 『놓지 마 어휘』 등으로 영역을 확장 중이다. 나승훈 작가는 자신의 인스타그램 계정(@artist.naseunghoon)을 통해 짧고 굵은 재미를 선사하는 인스타툰도 부지런히 선보이고 있다. Kia Design Magazine recently met up with Seunghoon Na, the cartoon artist affectionately referred to as the “president of the webtoon world for elementary students.” Hanging On! (“Nochima Jeongsinjul” in Korean), which he has been serializing for 13 years with story writer Taehoon Shin, is a unique webtoon (Korean online cartoon) that encompasses the bizarre as well as everyday life, fantasy, and black comedy, all of which is presented in a unique episode-oriented omnibus style. His clear, simple humor reminds many of “Joy for Reason,” one of the five pillars in support of Kia’s design philosophy “Opposites United.” Let’s take a look at “President” Na’s minimalist humor and the world of webtoons, which is currently in the K-content spotlight. A well-known webtoon artist, Seunghoon Na began serializing Hanging On! on the Naver Webtoon site in 2009 while still a student at Kookmin University’s Department of Visual Communication Design. Season 2 of the webtoon was later completed in 2019. To date, it has received 2.9 billion views, with the serialization launch of Season 3 having already taken place in November 2022. The original webtoon series was produced as an animation and web drama of the same title, and there is now an educational comic book series called Hanging On Science! [김현2] that has been published in 17 volumes and surpassed 1 million copies in sales. Today, the scope of the series is being expanded to books, including Hanging On Elementary English Vocabulary and Hanging On Vocabulary. Through his Instagram account (@artist.naseunghoon), Seunghoon Na is now also promoting Instagram Toon, which offers quick bursts of unforgettable fun. The word “webtoon,” which combines the terms “World Wide Web” and “cartoon,” is widely used in Korea. The concept is based on a word that was conceived of in a world of dial-up Internet access in the early 2000s, when the Internet was just starting to really take off in Korea. At the beginning of the new millennium, the cartoon publishing market was rapidly shifting to a webtoon-based platform. In an era when contests hosted by publishers were pretty much the only debut route for cartoon artists, those who were only creating cartoons without a relevant platform to share them began to make a name for themselves through their online account nicknames by posting cartoons using their blogs as a new platform. When you consider that this was only 20 years ago, it is actually quite remarkable how much the Korean webtoon market has grown since then. And that is because people can read webtoons anytime, anywhere—even if they are pressed for time—as long as they have a device with an Internet connection. In addition, webtoons are commonly adapted into animation films, dramas, and games, enjoying huge popularity regardless of the generation or country. Webtoons with content accessibility as well as flexible connectivity and expandability to other genres are now one of the areas at the forefront of the ever-burgeoning Korean Wave.

동시대 시간 예술의 최전선에서 이미 지닌 것을 돌아보는 현대무용가 차진엽. 수백 년의 세월을 쌓은 클래식 발레를 오늘의 춤으로 생생히 추어내는 발레리나 김주원. 이 두 무용가의 인터뷰를 통해 이들의 삶과 춤에 담긴 놀라운 '오퍼짓 유나이티드Opposites United'의 인사이트를 발견하길 바랍니다. 차진엽은 한국예술종합학교 무용원에서 학부 과정을 마치고 영국 런던 컨템포러리 댄스 스쿨에서 석사 학위를 따며 현대무용을 공부했다. 이후 영국 호페쉬 쉑터Hofesh Shechter, 네덜란드 갈릴리Galili, 한국의 LDP 무용단 등 국내외 무용 신scene에서 활발하게 활동했다. 2001년 한국무용협회 주최 〈젊은 안무가 창작공연〉에서 ‘최우수 안무가상’을 시작으로 한국 무용계에서 안무가로 자리매김하였으며, 2014년 문화체육관광부 장관 표창으로 ‘오늘의 젊은 예술가상’을 수상했다. 2014년 인천 장애인아시아경기대회와 2018년 평창동계올림픽의 개·폐회식 안무 감독을 맡았다. 현재 2012년 창단한 아티스트 그룹 ‘콜렉티브 에이Collective A’의 예술감독으로 활동 중이다. 김주원은 선화예술중학교에 다니다가 러시아로 유학을 떠나 볼쇼이 발레학교를 우등으로 졸업했다. 1998년 국립발레단 〈해적〉으로 데뷔 후, 15년간 국립발레단 수석무용수로 활약했다. 2000년 한국발레협회 신인상, 2001년 러시아 모스크바 국제발레콩쿠르 여자부 동상, 2004년 문화관광부 장관 표창으로 ‘오늘의 젊은 예술가상’ 등을 수상했다. 2006년에는 무용계 최고의 영예인 ‘브누아 드 라 당스’에서 최고 여성 무용수상을 수상하며 명실공히 세계 최고 수준의 발레리나로 인정 받았다. 2012년 국립발레단을 떠난 후 전방위로 활동하고 있으며 현재 성신여자대학교 무용예술학과 교수로 재직 중이다. Jinyeob Cha is a contemporary dancer who looks back on what we already have at the forefront of contemporary art. Joowon Kim is a ballerina who vividly turns classical ballet, which has been building upon itself for hundreds of years, into today’s dance. Through interviews with these two dancers, we hope that readers can discover for themselves the amazing insights of Opposites United through the lives and dancing of these two ladies. Jinyeob Cha studied contemporary dance at the School of Dance, Korea National University of Arts before receiving a master’s degree at London Contemporary Dance School. Cha has worked with many companies internationally, including Hofesh Shechter Company (UK), Galili Dance Company (Netherlands), and the Korean dance company LDP. Early in her career, she was the recipient of the Best Choreographer Award in 2001 at the Korea Dance Association’s Young Choreographers’ Creative Performance. After establishing herself as a noted choreographer in the Korean dance community, Cha then won the Young Artist Award in 2014, with a commendation from the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism. She went on to serve as the choreographer for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Incheon 2014 Asian Para Games and the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. She is currently working as an artistic director of the artist group Collective A, which she founded in 2012. After attending the prestigious Sunhwa Arts Middle School, Joowon Kim moved to Russia to study, eventually graduating from the revered Bolshoi Ballet School with honors. In 1998, after making her debut in the Korean National Ballet’s Le Corsaire, she became prima ballerina for the Korean National Ballet for 15 years. Over that time, she was the recipient of the Rookie of the Year Award from the Korean Dance Association (2000), a bronze medalist at the Moscow International Ballet Competition (2001), and winner of the Young Artist Award (2004), which was a commendation from the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism. What’s more is that at the 2006 Benois de la Danse, Kim took home the prize for top female dancer, the highest honor in the dance world, and was recognized as one of the world’s top ballerinas both in reputation and in practice. Since leaving the Korean National Ballet in 2012, she has stayed active in many different areas and is currently a professor in the Department of Dance Art at Sungshin Women’s University.

인간이라는 꿈 Dreams of a New Human
1895년 시작한 ‘베네치아 비엔날레 국제미술전’이 올해로 59번째를 맞았다. 제1차, 제2차 세계대전 때 중단과 재개의 우여곡절을 견디면서도 20세기를 관통해 꾸준히 이어오던 이 격년제 행사가 팬데믹으로 인해 3년 만에 열렸다. 매번 새롭게 선임하는 예술감독이 이끄는 본전시에는 평균 60여 개국, 200여 명의 작가가 참여한다. 다양한 나라에서 야심 차게 운영하는 국가관 전시가 함께 열리기 때문에 ‘미술계의 올림픽’이라고 불리는 행사다. 이번 베네치아 비엔날레는 밀라노 태생의 큐레이터, 세실리아 알레마니Cecilia Alemani가 예술감독으로 지명되어 한껏 기대를 모았다. 공공미술의 성공 사례로 꼽히는 뉴욕 하이라인 아트High Line Art를 이끈 디렉터 겸 수석 큐레이터이기 때문이다. 더불어 본 비엔날레 최초로 이탈리아 출신의 여성 예술감독이기도 하다. 알레마니가 기획한 이번 비엔날레의 타이틀은 ‘꿈의 우유(The Milk of Dreams)’다. 소설가이자 초현실주의 화가였던 리어노라 캐링턴Leonora Carrington(1917-2011)이 쓴 그림책 제목에서 빌려왔다. 자기 아이를 위해 직접 쓰고 그린, 다소 그로테스크한 그림책에서 캐링턴이 상상의 생명체가 등장하는 마법 세계를 묘사했다면, 알레마니의 본전시는 ‘포스트 휴먼’의 조건을 탐구하는 작품을 적극적으로 선보였다. 다양한 존재가 거주하는 혼종의 세계, 생태계를 재구성하는 흥미로운 돌연변이에 관한 힌트는 약 80여 점의 커미션 신작과 근작을 통해 본전시 곳곳에 숨어들었다. The International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, which was established in 1895, marked its 59th anniversary this year. The biennial event, which continued running through the 20th century despite the repeated suspensions and resumptions during two world wars, was held for the first time in three years due to its suspension once again during the pandemic. Throughout its history, an average of 200 artists from 60 countries participate in the main exhibition, which is led by a newly appointed artistic director every time. Often described as the “Olympics in the art world” because of its special exhibition featuring national pavilions, it is ambitiously operated by a wide range of countries each time it is held. This year’s Biennale di Venezia was highly anticipated, as Milan-born curator Cecilia Alemani was appointed as the artistic director. She is the director and chief curator of High Line Art in New York, considered by many to be a successful example of public art. She is also the first Italian female artistic director in the history of the biennale. The title of the biennale led by Alemani is “The Milk of Dreams,” which was borrowed from the title of a picture book by novelist and surrealist painter Leonora Carrington (1917-2011). It was, however, not a simple act of “borrowing.” While Carrington’s rather grotesque picture book for her children depicted a magical world featuring imaginary creatures, artists in Alemani’s main exhibition actually presented works exploring posthuman conditions. Hints concerning interesting mutations that reconstruct a mixed world and ecosystem where various beings reside were hidden throughout the main exhibition. To be more specific, this was accomplished through roughly 80 new commissioned works as well as the more recent works of those same artists.

저는 아브힐라샤 쟐라니Abhilasha Jhalani입니다. 2020년 1월부터 기아 인도 디자인센터에서 수석 CMF(Color Material & Finish) 디자이너로 일하고 있어요. 다양한 영역에서 디자인과 기술의 힘을 연구하는 데 관심이 많고요. 인도 시장에 특화된 다양한 프로젝트에 참여했습니다. 지금은 기아 CMF 디자인에 도움 되는 인도 공급업체를 식별하는 업무를 맡고 있어요. 저는 푸자 마이셰리Pooja Maisheri입니다. 아브힐라샤와 함께 2020년 1월부터 기아 인도 디자인센터의 수석 CMF 디자이너로 일하고 있습니다. 소재, 질감, 패턴을 통합해 색상의 특성을 관찰하고 해석하는 일에 매료되어 이 분야로 왔답니다. 인도에서 출시한 여러 프로젝트의 디자인 연구와 아이디어 구상에 참여했어요. 현재 연구, 아이디어, 개발, 분석을 통해 미래 트렌드를 예측하고, 인도 소비자의 심리와 행동을 리서치하는 역할을 맡고 있습니다. 2019년 기아는 인도에서 셀토스라는 제품을 처음으로 출시했는데요. 반응이 좋았어요. 쇼룸에서 가까이 살펴보며 현대적인 느낌과 인간 중심 디자인, 그리고 브랜드에 감탄했던 기억이 또렷해요. 그해 말 기아가 인도에 디자인센터를 운영한다는 이야기를 듣고 CMF 디자이너로 지원자고 마음먹었죠. 그렇게 기아에 들어와 시야를 넓히고 경험을 쌓으면서 모빌리티 솔루션을 보다 충실히 하는 데 기여한 것 같아 기분이 좋습니다. 기아는 인도 시장에 데뷔하며 과감하고 자신감 있고 스타일리시한 브랜드로 큰 화제를 불렀어요. 저는 가구, 라이프스타일, 지속가능성 제품, 이륜차 등 다양한 분야에서 학습한 지식을 토대로 기아에 합류하게 되었는데요. 촉각적이고 몰입감 있는 경험을 디자인할 때 과거에 쌓은 지식이 큰 도움이 돼요. My name is Abhilasha Jhalani. I have been working as a Senior Color Material & Finish (CMF) designer at Kia Design India since Jan 2020. I am passionate about researching the power of design and technique in different domains. I have been involved in the research and development phase of a couple of projects that are specific to the India market. At present I am working on identifying Indian suppliers that can help us achieve Kia’s material and application goals going forward. My name is Pooja Maisheri. My journey with Kia Design India as a Senior Color Material Finish Designer started since Jan 2020. My fascination to observe and interpret the character of color in integration with materials, textures, patterns inspired me to enter this domain. Being an Industrial designer I believe that products, materials and surfaces speak a sensorial language which if well applied, communicates to the user. My role involves understanding the psychological and behavioral aspects of Indian consumers by predicting the future trends through research, ideation, development and analysis. I got to be a part of design research and ideation for a few projects. I want to continue to demystify the CMF design process and accelerate the learning curve. Kia Seltos was the first product that was launched in India in 2019 and was received very well. I distinctly remember going to the showroom and seeing it up-close and admiring the design and the brand for its modernity and human centricity. Later that year I learnt that Kia is starting its design department in India and decided to apply for the CMF role. I joined Kia in Jan 2020 to expand my horizon, exposure of work and above all to contribute in making mobility solutions more fulfilling. CMF design is all about curating multiple trends, colors, patterns, textures and discovering tiny details. It cultivates the distinct style of Kia by intuition and anticipating about “What’s coming up next?” Color has emotion and defines ones voice that tells us the story. Kia brand created a huge buzz while making the debut in the Indian market as it was perceived to be a bold, confident & stylish brand. Interdisciplinary learning in various domains like furniture, lifestyle, sustainable products, 2 wheelers have empowered my knowledge to pursue a career in a brand like Kia. It allows me to design tactile and immersive experiences through CMF.

For this volume, Kia Design Magazine met up with Chanjoong Kim, an architect at the architectural firm The System Lab, which has been at the forefront of a new architectural production system in Korea through its bold technological innovations and multidirectional collaborations. With his trademark flexibility, Kim not only dismantles a benumbed sense of architectural inertia while addressing people’s lives today but also has the foresight to predict what changes will unfold in the future. Let’s learn why The System Lab’s audacious architectural efforts are attracting attention as ingenious cultural products. Chanjoong Kim made a unique achievement in Korean architecture in the 2010s. After graduating from Korea University’s Department of Architectural Engineering, he began his studies at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich) and then earned his master’s degree in architecture at Harvard University. Later, he gained work experience at Hanul Architects & Engineers Inc. in Seoul and KSWA in Boston. Since returning to Korea, he has served as a visiting professor at Kyung Hee University’s graduate school of architecture, while serving as principal architect at The System Lab. He was invited to the 10th Venice Biennale held in 2006 to represent Korea in the field of architecture at the star-studded event and was subsequently selected as one of six young Asian architects to take note of at the Beijing International Architecture Biennale that same year. To date, his works have been featured in many renowned international journals, including Architectural Review (UK), Domus and Abitare (Italy), Casa Mica (Spain), and Mark (Netherlands). Characterized by a systematic combination of industry and technology, Chanjoong Kim’s architecture has evolved through the development of new materials and radical applications, an all-round collaboration with the industry, and strategic thinking that is differentiated from existing building production methods. In addition to real-world tasks—whether experiments with modules and units, architectural customization in countless ways, a continuous reflection on a production system like prefabrication, and building design services to respond to clients’ diverse needs—Kim pays a great deal of attention to and puts a tremendous amount of effort into the public good, such as building villages and ecosystems by using architecture as his medium. Some of his major projects include the JTBC Building, Samjin Pharm Research Center, Seoul Botanic Park’s greenhouse, Wooran Foundation, Healing Stay Kosmos Resort (Ulleungdo Island), KEB Hana Bank Place 1, KH VATEC office building, Hands Corporation Building (Hannam-dong), and Gurume Resort.

Byungrok Chae transforms the Joseon Dynasty’s Munjado (letter painting) in a contemporary way, while Kijo Kim captures messages in retro-style lettering. Read over our interviews with these two graphic designers to discover new insights into Opposites United. Byungrok Chae received his MFA in Graphic Design (with a specialization in graphic expression) at Tama Art University in Japan. Since 2014, he has run a graphic design studio called CBR Graphic, and works on a wide variety of projects in collaboration with cultural organizations and businesses. His works are housed at the Victoria and Albert Museum (London), the Pinakothek der Moderne (Munich), and the National Hangeul Museum (Seoul). He is currently an adjunct professor at Ewha Womans University’s College of Art & Design and Konkuk University’s Communication Design Department. A Korean graphic designer well known for his Hangeul lettering, Kim majored in visual communication design at Seoul National University. Starting in his school days, he actively worked as the founding member and senior designer for an independent music label, BGBG Record, and was responsible for the album artwork of many musicians, such as Kiha & The Faces and Broccoli you too. He founded design studio Kijoside in 2011, and has since been working in a variety of areas, from posters and exhibitions to performances and video media. For artists whose subject is buried in the past, it is all about looking back on what has already transpired and applying a contemporary perspective lens to it. This is because we can produce developmental results only when we stop following what has happened before and instead understand the context of the times and fuse what has already taken place in the past with the here and now. Through this process of deep thinking, new creations are born and inspire people living in the present. We met two graphic designers, Byungrok Chae, who reinterprets Korean aesthetics through contemporary graphics, and Kijo Kim, who has tried various artworks with so-called “retro-style” Hangeul lettering. We talked about a number of issues, including what they wanted to express about things inspired by what is old as well as what we should not miss when we encounter things from the past in modern society.

바꾼 그림 Paintings That Changed the Ways Of Seeing
여기 평생의 질문에 매달린 사람이 있다. “단 한 점의 작품으로 감각의 큰 변화를 불러일으킬 수 있을까? 만약 그렇다면, 그 그림이 다른 어떤 그림보다 더 진실하다고 말할 수 있을까?” 20세기 그리고 21세기에 이르러 여전히 ‘가장 위대한 화가’로 불리는 폴 세잔(Paul Cezanne, 1839-1906)이 그 주인공이다. 사과, 물병, 복숭아, 테이블, 식탁보. 세잔의 그림에서 한없이 반복되는 정물이다. 우리 눈에는 너무나도 익숙하고, 도무지 하나도 새롭지 않은 것에서 세잔은 대체 무엇을 보았을까? 그에게만 있는 특별한 재능이 세기의 작품을 낳은 것이라면, 그 재능은 꾸준한 탐구, 결코 만족하지 않는 실험일 것이다. 평생토록 동일한 요소를 한결같이 그린 세잔의 반복이란 미술사에서 거대한 혁신이었다. 그는 인상파에서 출발했지만 이에 머물지 않고 미래의 회화 영역을 개척했다. 미국의 미술사학자이자 평론가 바바라 로즈Barbara Ellen Rose가 말한 세잔과 다른 화가의 차이점은 세잔의 특별함을 정확하게 말해준다. “거장으로 불리는 다른 화가들은 ‘이건 내가 아는 건데’로 시작한다면, 세잔은 ‘이걸 내가 과연 안다고 할 수 있을까?’로 출발한다.” 세잔이 미술의 시각을 뒤집었다 한들 요즘의 예술계는 스타일 경쟁과 정치 사회적 의제가 범람 중이다. ‘여전히 동시대의 관심을 사로잡을 수 있을까?’ 의문이 드는 상황. 하지만 시카고 미술관(Art Institute of Chicago)은 ‘그렇다’고 믿는다. 화려한 수식어 하나 없이 그저 ‘세잔(Cezanne)’이라는 이름을 붙인 이번 전시는 시카고 미술관에서 무려 70년 만에, 미국에서는 25년 만에 열리는 세잔의 회고전이다. 80점의 유화, 37점의 수채화 및 드로잉, 2개의 스케치북 완전판, 세잔이 쓰던 그림 도구가 한데 모인 전시는 금세기에 다시 보기 어렵다고 자부할 만하다. Here we have someone who pursued a pair of questions for most of his life: Could a painter create artworks one sensation at a time? And, if so, would pictures made this way somehow be truer to life than those made by other means? The person is Paul Cezanne (1839–1906), the man often referred to as the “the greatest of us all” by fellow artists and admirers in the 20th century and even now in the 21st century. Apples, water bottles, peaches, tables, tablecloths—these are the still life objects that are endlessly repeated in Cezanne’s paintings. What in the world did Cezanne see in what was so familiar to us all and not in the least bit new to people’s eyes? If indeed his special talent gave birth to some of the most notable works of the century, the talent would certainly have been his steady exploration and experiments in art, none of which he was ever satisfied with. Cezanne’s repetition of painting the same elements throughout his life was a huge innovation in art history. He started as an Impressionist, but veered from this path and went on to pioneer the realm of painting to come in the future. The art historian and art critic Barbara Ellen Rose got it right about the uniqueness of Cezanne when she said that the old masters’ starting point was, “This is what I see,” whereas Cezanne’s was, “Is this what I see?” Cezanne completely overhauled the view of the art world, though today’s art world is still inundated with competition between individuals and their styles as well as their political and social agendas. While we may ask the question “Can Cezanne still capture the attention of people nowadays?” the Art Institute of Chicago believes they have the answer: Yes, he most certainly can. Even though they could have added any number of superlatives to the title, the Art Institute of Chicago decided to forego a single splendid modifier and simply called their most recent exhibition Cezanne. This is the first major retrospective of Cezanne’s work in the United States in more than 25 years, and the first exhibition on Cezanne organized by the Art Institute of Chicago in more than 70 years. It explores Cezanne’s work across media and genres, featuring 80 oil paintings, 40 watercolors and drawings, two complete sketchbooks, and painting tools that Cezanne used in his lifetime. Cezanne could, in fact, be an exhibition that will not be seen again for the rest of this century.

안녕하세요. 저는 버크 어너Berk Erner입니다. 캘리포니아 어바인에 있는 기아 미국 디자인센터에서 수석 외장 디자이너로 일하고 있어요. 2018년 기아에 합류해 다양한 프로젝트를 즐겁게 진행했는데요. 가장 최근에 참여한 프로젝트는 작년 LA 오토쇼에서 선보인 EV9 콘셉트카입니다. 기억나는 인생의 첫 순간부터 지금까지 저는 항상 자동차광이었어요. 저희 집 방바닥에서 저도 모르는 사이에 자동차 디자이너로서의 도전을 시작했죠. 외동아들이었던 저는 초등학교에서 돌아와 심심할 때면 혼자 바닥에 앉아서 몇 시간이고 그림을 그렸답니다. 그리기라는 순수하고 단순한 행위는 완전한 기쁨 그 자체였어요. 펜이나 종이가 떨어지지 않는 한, 백지는 무한한 즐거움으로 들어가는 관문이었죠. 바닥에 앉아 좋아하는 TV 만화영화를 틀어놓고 몇 시간씩 차를 그리는 걸 좋아했답니다. 8살인가 9살 때로 기억하는데요. 어느 날 아버지가 방에 들어와 말씀하셨어요. “항상 볼 때마다 차를 그리는구나. 나중에 커서 자동차 디자이너가 되는 건 어떠니?” 그리고 자동차 디자이너가 무슨 일을 하는 사람인지 설명해주셨어요. 그 말씀에 저는 딱 꽂히고 말았죠! ‘그런 직업이 있다면 꼭 해봐야지!’ 그날 이후로 사람들이 장래 희망을 물어보면 저는 자동차 디자이너가 될 거라고 말했어요. 때마침 그때 할머니께서 제 인생 최초의 교통 설계 과제를 내주셨죠. 다리가 부러진 친척을 위해 비행 신발을 디자인해달라는 부탁이었어요. 할머니와 함께 친척을 방문할 때마다 저는 디자인 스케치를 들고 가서 다양한 작동 원리를 장황하게 설명하곤 했답니다. 그 과정이 정말 즐거워서 친척의 다리가 다 나은 후에도 여러 아이디어를 계속 발전시킬 정도였죠. 여러 해가 지나도 자동차와 디자인에 대한 관심은 줄어들기는커녕 더 커지기만 했어요. 하지만 앞날이 순탄하지만은 않았죠. 제가 살던 나라에는 자동차 회사도 없고, 교육받을 만한 변변한 기관도 없었거든요. 제가 아트센터디자인대학(Art Center College of Design)에서 제대로 운송 디자인을 공부할 수 있었던 건 큰 행운이었어요. 2014년에 졸업하면서 바로 자동차 디자이너가 되어 일을 시작했죠. Hello my name is Berk Erner. I am a senior exterior designer at Kia Design Center America located in Irvine, California. I joined Kia’s design team in 2018 and had the pleasure of working on various projects. Latest project I contributed to was Concept EV9, which was introduced at the Los Angeles Auto Show in 2021. I've always been a car enthusiast since I knew myself. My adventure as a car designer actually started on the floor of our house without even realizing it. I'm the only child in our family, and when I came back from elementary school and was bored by myself, I would sit on the floor and draw for hours. Sheer simplicity of drawing is also the absolute bliss of it. A blank sheet of paper is a gateway to infinite fun, as long as you don’t run out of pen or paper. I loved to sit on the floor, tune in my favorite cartoons on the TV, and draw cars for hours. One of these days I think I was 8 or 9 years old, my father came into the room and said, “You always draw cars. Why don't you become a car designer?" and he explained to me what car designers do. I was smitten in my mind! If there is such a profession, I should definitely do it! Since that day, whenever I have been asked, I have said, “I will be a car designer”. Right around this time I got my first transportation design assignment from my grandmother. She asked me to design flying shoes for a relative of ours who had a broken leg. Every time we visited her, I would take my design sketches with me and explain at length different working principles. I really enjoyed the process, even so that I continued developing ideas even after the broken leg healed. Over the years, my interest in cars and design has never diminished, but rather increased. However the road ahead was not straightforward, as the country I was living in had no car companies, nor any source of education in the field. Luckily, with good guidance I was able to study transportation design at Art Center College of Design. Upon my graduation in 2014, I started working professionally as a car designer.

조경가 정영선 Boundless Sequence — Youngsun Jung, Landscape Architect
《기아 디자인 매거진》은 한국 1세대 여성 조경가 정영선을 만났습니다. 경관을 세밀하게 고려하는 조경은 사람이 공간을 받아들이는 모빌리티, 시간과 공간을 구성하는 시퀀스와 맞닿아 있었습니다. 정영선 조경가가 말하는 한국의 경관 미학과 근대 미학자 고유섭의 생각을 겹쳐보며 '오퍼짓 유나이티드Opposites United'의 갈래를 여럿으로 펼쳐봅니다. 정영선은 한국의 조경 설계 분야를 개척한 인물이다. 서구에서 시작한 조경의 개념을 한국의 국토와 경관에 맞게 정착시켰다. 인위적이지 않고 자연 그대로의 모습을 표현하는 정영선의 조경 작업은 한국 경관 미학의 전통적인 맥락을 이어간다. 1941년 태어난 그는 1964년 서울대학교 농과대학 농학과를 졸업하고 1975년 서울대학교 환경대학원 조경학과를 1기로 졸업했다. 이후 청주대 교수를 지내다 1987년 조경설계 서안을 설립했다. 최근에는 서울대학교 농업생명과학대학 석좌교수로 후학을 양성했다. 국내에서 조경 설계 분야에 대한 사회적 인식이 부족했던 시기에 아시아선수촌아파트, 예술의 전당, 호암미술관 전통정원 희원, 인천국제공항, 선유도공원, 청계광장 및 청계천 복원 사업 제1공구, 광화문광장, 여의도 샛강 생태공원, 화성 현대차 롤링힐스호텔, 제주 오설록 티뮤지엄, 원 다르마 뉴욕, 아모레퍼시픽 신사옥, 서울식물원, 경춘선 숲길 등 굵직한 프로젝트의 조경을 설계했다. 특히 빗물하수처리장을 재활용한 선유도공원 프로젝트는 전 국민에게 조경에 대한 인식을 새롭게 각인시켰다. 선유도공원은 미국조경가협회와 세계조경가협회에서 수상했으며, 뉴욕의 원 다르마 센터는 미국건축가협회에서 수상했다. 청계천 복원 사업과 서울식물원 또한 세계조경가협회에서 수상한 바 있다. 《Kia Design Magazine》 met Youngsun Jung, a first-generation female landscape architect in Korea. The landscaping that considers the landscape in detail was in contact with the mobility of people accepting the space, and the sequence that composes time and space. By overlapping the views of Korean landscape aesthetics and the modern aestheticist Yu-seop Ko, landscape architect Youngsun Jung spreads out the branches of OU. Youngsun Jung is a pioneer in the field of landscape design in Korea. As a matter of fact, she established the concept of landscaping, which has its roots in the West, to suit the land and landscape of Korea. Jung’s landscaping work expresses natural and non-artificial conditions, continuing on with the traditional context of Korean landscape aesthetics. Born in 1941, Jung graduated from Seoul National University’s Department of Agricultural Science in 1964, and was one of the first graduates from the Department of Landscape Architecture at the same university’s Graduate School of Environmental Studies in 1975. Later, she worked as a professor at Cheongju University before founding Seo-Ahn Total Landscape Design & Consulting Group in 1987. Most recently, she mentored students as a professor at Seoul National University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. At a time when there was a lack of social awareness about the field of landscape design, Jung designed landscapes for major projects, including Asia Seonsuchon Apartment, the Seoul Arts Center, Hee Won (a traditional Korean garden at the Ho-Am Art Museum), Incheon International Airport, Seonyudo Park, Cheonggye Square, Cheonggyecheon Restoration Project Section 1, Gwanghwamun Square, Yeouido Saetgang Ecological Park, Rolling Hills Hotel in Hwaseong, Jeju Osulloc Tea Museum, Won Dharma Center in New York, Amorepacific Group’s new headquarters, Seoul Botanic Park, and Gyeongchun Line Forest Trail. The Seonyudo Park project, which was built by recycling a lot of the previous materials of the former sewage treatment plant, had a particularly important impact on making Koreans newly aware of the power of landscaping. Over the years, Jung has won several awards from notable groups worldwide, including the American Society of Landscape Architects and the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) for her work on Seonyudo Park, and the American Institute of Architects (AIA) for her work on the Won Dharma Center in New York. Jung’s contribution to Seoul’s Cheonggyecheon Restoration Project and Seoul Botanic Park also won awards from the IFLA.

Today, Choi is the artistic director of the ensemble blank, which was selected for an artist-in-residence by The House Concert in 2022. Classical music lovers have various tastes. One type of classical music lover is someone who enjoys listening to early and contemporary music. Early music that pursues authenticity through its instruments and playing techniques of the time when the composer was still alive and contemporary music that is created today may seem as if they are complete opposites. However, the two are in fact connected with each other through an art called music. We sat down with Sun-Ah Kim, one of Korea's leading early music conductors and the principal conductor of the Bucheon Civic Chorale, and Jaehyuck Choi, a contemporary music composer and conductor who serves as the artistic director of the ensemble blank. They talked about early music and contemporary music, the old and the new, art beyond the two of them, and the stage that they dream of performing on one day.

끝나지 않는 Upside-down, Rebellious, Endless
“거꾸로 된 이미지는 더 잘 보인다. 곧바로 보는 이의 눈을 향한다.” 캔버스 속에 사람이 거꾸로 서 있다. 제 얼굴을 옆으로 기울여 작품을 보려는 관람객이 더러 눈에 띈다. 평소에 알던 중력을 벗어난 그림을 제대로 보기 위해 뒤집힌 그림 앞을 오랜 시간 떠나지 못한다. 그림의 크기 또한 보는 이를 압도한다. 표면에는 두껍고 거친 물감의 질감이 고스란히 드러난다. 역동적이고 묘한 감정이 일렁인다. ‘거꾸로 걸린 그림’의 작가는 게오르그 바젤리츠Georg Baselitz. 1938년생으로 ‘독일 현대미술의 거장’, ‘현대 회화의 살아있는 신화’로 불리는 페인터다. 지난해 10월부터 올 3월까지 프랑스 파리 퐁피두센터에서 열린 《바젤리츠 - 회고전》은 지난 60여 년 간의 필력을 쏟아부은 걸작을 총망라하며 작가에게도 큰 분기점이 될 중요한 전시였다. 퐁피두센터의 관장을 역임한 베르나르 블리스텐Bernard Blistène이 바젤리츠와 긴밀하게 소통하며 몸소 큐레이팅을 맡아 화제가 됐다. 1960년대 초반의 〈대혼란 선언(Pandemonium Manifesto)〉 연작부터 거꾸로 된 모티프가 처음으로 등장하는 1969년 이후의 〈영웅들(Heroes)〉과 〈분열들(Fractures)〉 연작에 이르기까지, 작가가 시도했던 회화적 실험이 풍성한 향연을 펼친다. 더불어 그의 〈러시안 페인팅Russian Paingting〉 연작과 자기반성적 작업인 〈리믹스 앤 타임Remix and Time〉도 빼놓을 수 없다. 이번 전시는 퐁피두센터의 갤러리1 공간 전체를 사용하며 총 11개의 섹션을 가질 만큼 웅장하게 구성됐다. 《아방가르드의 발견»으로 시작해 《경험의 자화상》, 《추락하는 영웅들》, 《분열된 이미지》, 《뒤집힌 이미지》, 《추상과 구상 사이》, 《추상 너머》, 《시대정신》, 《기억의 공간》, 《‘러시안 페인팅’부터 ‘리믹스’까지》, 《무엇이 남았나》로 긴 여정은 끝을 맺는다. 바젤리츠의 초기부터 현재까지 연대순으로 구성해 단조롭게 느껴질 수 있지만 매 시기 강렬한 작품을 선보인 바젤리츠의 회고전이라면 가히 해봄직한 구성이다. 페인팅뿐 아니라 인물 조각, 드로잉에 이르는 주요 작품을 선별해 60년에 이르는 작업 과정을 빠짐없이 공개했다. “기억을 회화로 다시 그려내는 일은 과연 가능할까?” “회화의 기법과 모티프는 어떻게 변해왔을까?” “미술사에서 미학적인 형식은 어떻게 발전해왔을까?” “20세기와 21세기의 정치미학적 체제는 예술의 형식주의에 어떤 영향을 주었을까?” 등 일련의 전시 흐름은 전후 독일에서 예술가로서 고민했던 화두를 고스란히 보여준다. 한 작가의 작품을 이렇게 다양한 카테고리로 바라볼 수 있다는 사실만으로도 바젤리츠라는 인물이 겪은 예술의 여정이 얼마나 다채롭고, 또한 헌신적이었는지 충분히 짐작할 수 있다. 이 거대한 전시를 한 편의 글로 다루기엔 불가능하기에, 바젤리츠의 가장 유명하고 오래된 모티프가 나타나는 《뒤집힌 이미지》를 통해 작가가 제안하는 매력적인 철학에 집중하는 기회를 가질까 한다. "An object painted upside down is suitable for painting because it is unsuitable as an object.” A person is standing upside down on the canvas. Some viewers lean their faces to the side to look at the work. In order to get a proper look at a painting that breaks away from the usual plane of perspective, viewers cannot leave the upside-down painting for very long. The size of the picture also overwhelms them. The texture of thick, rough paint—which is both dynamic and strangely emotional—is well exposed on the surface. This “painting [seemingly] hung upside down” is by Georg Baselitz. Born in 1938, Baselitz is one of the most celebrated contemporary German artists, and a living legend of contemporary painting. Held at the Centre Pompidou in Paris from October 2021 to March 2022, Baselitz – The retrospective was an important exhibition that marked a significant turning point for the artist, and covered many of his masterpieces from the past six decades. It made headlines as Bernard Blistène, who served as the director of the Centre Pompidou’s Musée national d’Art moderne until 2021, closely communicated with Baselitz and personally curated the exhibition. From his initial paintings to the Pandemonium Manifesto of the early 1960s, the Heroes series and the Fractures series of upside-down motifs begun in 1969, the exhibition also showcased successive ensembles of works in which Baselitz experimented with new pictorial techniques. In addition, the exhibition featured his Russian Paintings series and two of his self-reflective works, Remix and Time. This exhibition was grandly organized and made use of the entire space at Centre Pompidou’s Gallery 1, featuring 11 sections in total. Starting with “Discovering the avant-gardes,” the exhibition revealed a long journey along “Self-portraits of an experience,” “Fallen Heroes,” “Fractured images,” “Reversing the image,” “Between abstraction and figuration,” “Beyond abstraction,” "Zeitgeist," “The space of memories,” “From the ‘Russian Pictures’ to ‘Remix’,” and ends with “What remains.” To some, this may seem monotonous, as the exhibition is presented in chronological order, from Baselitz’s early days to the present day, yet it is worth doing for someone who has so many powerful works in each period of his artistic activities. On top of his paintings, the exhibition also displayed other major works—from sculptures of human figures to drawings—all of which were selected to allow the public unfettered access to the artist’s work process over the last 60 years. The course of the exhibition is a testament to the complexity of life as an artist in post-war Germany, and reveal his endless line of questions concerning the possibilities of representing his memories, variations in technique and traditional motifs of painting, aesthetic forms developed over the course of art history, and the formalisms dictated and conveyed by the various political and aesthetic regimes of the 20th and 21st centuries. The fact that one artist’s work can be viewed in such a variety of categories shows just how diverse and devoted Baselitz’s artistic journey has been. As it is impossible to cover this colossal exhibition in one article, I would like to take this opportunity to focus on the enticing philosophy the artist proposes through the “Reversing the image” section in which Baselitz’s most famous and oldest motif appears.

그의 다양한 이야기를 들어봅니다. Meet Han Jeong.
저는 미래상품디자인팀에서 익스테리어 디자인을 담당하는 책임연구원 정한입니다. 저희 팀은 디자인 개발 선행 단계에서 다양한 시도를 통해 자동차 디자인의 새로운 패러다임을 연구하고 있어요. 기아디자인센터는 제 첫 커리어를 시작한 곳이에요. 2009년 입사해 지금까지 인테리어와 익스테리어의 양산 업무를 맡아왔죠. 현재는 선행 업무를 주로 하고 있습니다. 어린 시절 그림 그리기와 이것저것 만들기를 좋아했어요. 디자이너라는 단어의 뜻도 몰랐는데 디자이너가 되겠다는 꿈을 꾼 것 같아요. 자동차 디자이너가 된 건 자연스럽게 흘러오게 된 결과라고 생각해요. 대학교에 다닐 때 친구 따라 자동차 디자인 동아리에 가입한 게 시작이었어요. 작은 골방에 붙어 있던 자동차 스케치를 마주하고 매력에 빠져들었죠. 열정 넘치는 사람들과 함께 꿈을 키웠는데, 지금 그들과 같은 회사에 다니고 있다는 점은 다시 생각해봐도 무척 신기해요. EV6 초기 디자인에 참여했을 때가 생각나네요. 저를 포함해 책임급 디자이너 두 명과 팀장급 한 명 그리고 헤드 디자이너까지 총 네 명으로 구성된 소규모 TFT팀이 갑자기 만들어졌어요. 독일로 출장을 갔는데, 출발 3일 전에 통보를 받았답니다. 당시 헤드 디자이너였던 루크 동커볼케 부사장님이 저희를 데리고 독일의 작은 스튜디오에서 디자인을 진행했는데요. 마치 대학 시절 동아리 활동을 하듯 그 과정이 재미있고 신선했어요. 최종 결정권자와 실무자가 같은 공간에서 일하다 보니 커뮤니케이션이 매우 신속하게 이루어졌어요. 보고가 아니라 디자인을 보여드리고 질문과 답변을 주고받는 식이었죠. 피드백이 빠르다 보니 백지상태에서도 조금씩 이미지를 만들 수 있었어요. 일주일이란 짧은 기한에 스케치부터 3D 모델까지 완성했어요. 특히 작업 방식뿐 아니라 함께 했던 멤버들의 에너지가 대단했죠. 창조에 대한 두려움이 전혀 없었어요. 이런 상황을 즐기면서 외장 디자이너로서 지녀야 할 주요한 태도를 배웠고 크게 성장할 수 있었습니다. 4개월 간의 짧은 프로젝트였지만 제가 기아디자인센터에서 참여한 프로젝트 중 가장 기억에 남아요. My name is Han Jeong. I’m a senior designer in charge of exterior design with the Future Product Design Team. Our team is working on a new paradigm of automobile design through various attempts at the pre-design development phase. I started my career at the Kia Design Center after joining the company in 2009. Up until now I’ve been in charge of the mass production of interior and exterior design. At present I mainly do pre-design work. When I was a child, I liked to draw and make things. I didn’t even know the meaning of the word “designer,” but I think I had a dream of becoming a designer. It was a natural outcome for me to become a car designer. When I was in university, I joined a car design club with a friend of mine. I fell in love with all the car sketches that were attached to the small club room. I nurtured my dream with passionate people, and it’s amazing that I’m now working for the same company as some of them. I remember being involved in the early design of the EV6. A small TFT of four people was rapidly created that included two senior designers (including myself), one team leader, and a head designer. Our team went on a business trip to Germany, and we were only informed of this trip three days before departure. Hyundai Motor Group’s Luc Donckerwolke, who was our head designer at the time, led us to a small studio in Germany to carry out some design work. The process was interesting and refreshing—almost like I was at my club back in university. Communication took place very quickly, as the final decision maker and working-level designers worked in the same space. Rather than preparing a report to the boss, we had a question-and-answer session on designs. The feedback was fast, so we were able to create design images little by little, even from scratch sometimes. Our team started the sketches and completed a 3D model within a short amount of time—about a week, all said and done. In particular, it wasn’t only the way we worked that was special; the energy of the team members was amazing. We had no fear of creation. While I really enjoyed that experience, I also learned a lot about the key attitude I should have as an exterior designer, and was able to grow quite a bit. It was a short project that lasted only four months, but it’s been the most memorable project I’ve taken part in at the Kia Design Center.

이번 이슈에서는 기아의 디자인 철학인 ‘오퍼짓 유나이티드Opposites United’와 놀랄 만큼 유사한 결로 자신의 예술 작업을 오랫동안 진행하며 대중의 마음을 끌어들인 아티스트를 만나보았습니다. 세계 곳곳에서 숱한 러브콜을 받는 최정화 작가가 그 주인공입니다. 극과 극이 통하고 대립이 일치하는 조화가 곧 예술이며, 이는 일상과 삶에서 시작한다는 그의 생각을 필름에 담아보았습니다. 한국을 대표하는 설치미술가. 1961년생으로 홍익대학교에서 회화를 전공했다. 1987년 28살 학생 신분으로 중앙미술대전에서 대상을 수상했으나 당시 유행하는 기법을 변형해 손쉽게 상을 받았다고 생각해 전통적인 미술에 대한 회의가 들어 졸업 후 돌연 인테리어 회사에 취직했다. 1989년 가슴시각개발연구소를 설립해 그래픽, 영화, 무대, 인테리어 등 다양한 디자인 영역에서 활동하면서 동시에 일상생활에서 흔히 보이는 물건들을 수집하고 서로 결합해 예술품으로 승화시키는 일에 몰두해왔다. 청담동의 상업 공간 인테리어, 영화 〈복수는 나의 것〉 미술 감독, 무용가 안은미의 무대 디자인, 각종 글로벌 갈라 파티 연출까지 전방위적인 활동을 보였고 지난 2018년에는 평창동계패럴림픽 개·폐막식 미술 감독을 맡았다. 2005년 세계 최고의 미술 행사인 베니스 비엔날레 국제미술전 한국관 작가로 참여했고, 같은 해 일민예술상을 받았다. 2006년 일민미술관에서 치른 개인전으로 한국문화예술위원회가 수여하는 ‘올해의 예술상’의 주인공이 됐다. 한국의 대표 중진 작가를 뽑아 신작을 의뢰하는 ‘MMCA 현대차 시리즈’에 선정되어 2018년 국립현대미술관에서 대규모 개인전을 열었다. 해외 유수의 뮤지엄 전시와 국제 비엔날레에 가장 자주 호출되는 한국 작가 중 한 명이다. 최정화의 사부는 시장이다. 그리고 진짜 사부는 아줌마다. 1964년 지은 오래된 양옥에 자리 잡은 작업실 문을 열고 나가면 거대한 시장이 펼쳐진다. 길가에는 조명, 전선, 케이블 가게가 빽빽이 들어찼고, 길 하나만 건너면 광장시장, 방산시장, 동대문시장이 손짓한다. 좁고 좁은 시장 바닥에서 아줌마가 공간을 운용하는 방법을 통해 설치를 배운 그는 아이디어가 떨어지면 시장을 돌아다니며 사부님의 찐한 노하우를 습득한다. 눈보다 가슴으로 볼 때 더 깊이 볼 수 있고, 귀보다 가슴으로 들을 때 더 넓게 들을 수 있다고 믿으며 30년 전 가슴시각개발연구소를 설립했고, 이젠 넓은 서울 바닥에서 사부님들을 지척에서 모시고 사는 작은 신전으로 만들었다. 사부님이 일상의 미학을 발휘하던 소쿠리, 밥그릇, 냄비 등의 주방용품은 쌓이고 또 쌓이며 거대한 설치물로 바뀌었다. 사부의 삶이 예술이고, 사부의 예술이 삶이었기 때문이다. In this issue, we will meet an artist who has been creating art through an artistic philosophy that is amazingly similar to Kia’s design philosophy—“Opposites United”— for quite some time, winning over the hearts of the general public along the way. Jeonghwa Choi has received a great deal of attention from all over the world. For Choi, he believes that extremes do meet and harmony between opposites does become art, and that such art begins with day-to-day life and life itself. Born in 1961 and earning a BA in Painting from Hongik University, Jeonghwa Choi is one of Korea’s leading installation artists. In 1987, he won the grand prize at the JoongAng FineArts Prize art competition as a 28-year-old student. In his opinion, he was easily able to win the prize by transforming popular techniques at the time, and he felt skeptical about traditional art. Then, he got a job at an interior design company right after graduation. In 1989, he founded Gasum Visual development Laboratory. Since then, he has worked in various design areas that include graphics, movies, stages, and interior design, while at the same time focusing on collecting objects commonly seen in everyday life and combining them with one another to sublimate them into artworks. Choi has consistently shown immense talent in a wide range of activities. For example, he has designed commercial structures in Cheongdam-dong, worked and the production designer the Korean film Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, was responsible for the dancer Eun-Me Ahn’s stage design, and has organized various international gala parties. In 2018, he was the art director of the opening and closing ceremonies at the Winter Paralympics in Pyeongchang. In 2005, he participated as an artist for the Korean Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, one of the world’s most acclaimed art events, and received the Ilmin Art Award that same year. For his solo exhibition held at Ilmin Museum of Art in 2006, he won the Arts Council Korea’s Arts Award of the Year. Later, he was selected for the MMCA Hyundai Motor Series, which selects top Korean artists and commissions them to create new works. He then held a large-scale solo exhibition at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, in 2018. Choi is one of the most frequently invited Korean artists at leading overseas museum exhibitions and international biennales. Jeonghwa Choi’s artistic master is the market, but the real artistic masters are ajumma (married/middle-aged women). When you open the door of his studio, which is located in an old Western-style house built in 1964, a huge market unfolds. Lighting, wire, and cable shops are densely packed along the street, and when you cross the road, three markets—Gwangjang Market, Bangsan Market, and Dongdaemun Market—beckon. Years ago, he learned to create installations by studying the methods that ajumma used to manage their stalls in such a narrow marketplace. Even today he travels around markets when he runs out of ideas so that he can acquire the down-to-earth know-how which only these real “masters” possess. Choi founded Gasum Visual development Laboratory 30 years ago under the belief that one’s heart can see deeper than the eyes and hear more sensitively than the ears, and now the studio has become a small temple, with many masters living nearby. Kitchenware such as baskets, rice bowls, and pots, which the masters use to demonstrate their daily aesthetics, are piled up, one on top of the other, and thus turned into huge installations. This is because the life of these ajumma masters is art, and their art is life.

Kia hosted an exhibition of Kia’s design philosophy, ‘Opposites United’ from October 19 to November 2 2024 at Space-S1 in Seongsu-dong, Seoul. The theme of the exhibition, ‘Opposites United: Intersections Beyond Boundaries,’ aimed to capture the ‘intersections’ that cross boundaries and create a new space for communication. The exhibition was organized into three spaces; Room of Relentless Innovators, Room of Creative Risk-takers, and Room of Culture Vanguard, a space designed to fuse the input and exchanges from all of the participants. We interviewed the three artists who successfully captured Opposites United in the exhibition about their creative approaches.

지난 2022년 서울 동대문디자인플라자DDP에서 다양한 조형물과 융합한 미디어아트를 감상할 수 있는 공간으로 이루어진 전시가 개최되었다. 모빌리티 기업 기아가 선보인 《오퍼짓 유나이티드Opposites United 특별전》이었다. 하지만 관람객들은 의아했다. 전시에 자동차의 흔적을 찾아볼 수 없었기 때문. 기아는 상업적 의도를 배제한 채, 2021년 론칭한 기아 디자인 철학 ‘오퍼짓 유나이티드’를 관람객들과 소통하고자 했다. 그래서 기아는 전시를 오감으로 느끼고 체험할 수 있도록 다양한 미디어아트라는 매개체로 상반된 개념의 창의적 융합을 전달했다.

In 2022, Kia hosted the ‘Opposites United Exhibition’ at Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) in Seoul, South Korea. The exhibition consisted of multiple sections where you could enjoy media art fused with various artworks. Visitors were puzzled because there was no sign of an automobile anywhere at this event. This was because Kia wanted to communicate its design philosophy, ‘Opposites United,’ announced in 2021, with visitors without any immediate commercial intentions. At the exhibition, Kia conveyed the creative fusion of opposing concepts through various art mediums so that visitors could feel and experience the new design concept fully.

한 마디의 말보다 경험이 중요하다는 말처럼 기아는 첫 전시에서 디자인철학의 5가지 필라(Pillar)인 ‘인간의 삶을 위한 기술Technology for Life’, ‘자연과 조화되는 대담함Bold for Nature’, ‘이유 있는 즐거운 경험Joy for Reason’, ‘미래를 향한 혁신적 시도Power to Progress’, ‘평온 속의 긴장감Tension for Serenity’을 주제로 다채로운 작품을 펼쳐 놓았다.

Designed to deliver an experience which could speak louder than words, Kia’s first ‘Opposites United’ themed exhibition hosted a wide range of work under the five pillars of its design philosophy: Technology for Life, Bold for Nature, Joy for Reason, Power to Progress, and Tension for Serenity.

이후 2023년 밀라노 디자인 위크에서 DDP 전시를 재구성하여 해외 관람객들에게 선보였다. 전시에서 몰입형 미디어아트 작품 외 큐레이터, 학자, 디자이너 등 다방면의 전문가들이 연사로 참여한 포럼과 음악 공연 등 다채로운 프로그램을 통해 관람객들과 더 큰 문화적 유대를 형성하도록 했다. 그 해 가을 서울에서 이어진 국내외 뮤지션, 퍼포머들이 참여한 공연 이벤트인 ‘로맨싱 잼스톤스Romancing Gemstones’과 DDP 건물 외벽을 휘감은 대규모 미디어아트 전시인 서울라이트에 참가하며 지속적으로 관객과 소통했다.

Kia reorganized the 2022 DDP exhibition and presented it to an international audience at Milan Design Week in 2023. In addition to the immersive media artwork, the exhibition featured a variety of programs, including forums and musical performances by curators, academics, designers, and other experts to foster a greater cultural connection with visitors. In the autumn of that year, Kia continued to engage with audiences by participating in Romancing Gemstones, a performance event in Seoul featuring local and international musicians and performers, and Seoulight, a large-scale media art exhibition that projected images on the exterior walls of the DDP building.


2024년 밀라노 디자인 위크에서 기아는 ‘경계 너머의 교차점 Intersections Beyond Boundaries’을 주제로 아티스트들의 표현과 해석을 전달하는 그릇(Vessel)이 되어, 서로 다른 분야에서 활동하는 아티스트들이 ‘ 경계 너머의 교차점’이란 주제를 창의적으로 접근해 빚어낸 작품을 선보였으며, 기아 디자인이 그리는 이상에 대한 대화를 나누는 토크와 포럼, 공연 등을 연이어 진행했다. 그리고 국내 관람객들을 위해 다시 한번 서울 전시를 개최했다.

At the 2024 Milan Design Week, Kia provided a platform for artists to express and interpret the theme ‘Intersections Beyond Boundaries.’ They hosted talks, forums, and performances where artists from various fields presented their creative interpretations of the theme and engaged in dialogues about Kia Design’s ideals. The exhibition was subsequently presented in Seoul.


여기서 궁금증이 발생한다. 기아라는 모빌리티 기업이 도대체 왜 자동차 전시가 아닌 아트 전시를 개최하는 것이냐 라는 의문. 이 의문에 해답은 기아 디자인 철학의 뿌리에서 찾을 수 있을 것이다. 기아 디자인 철학은 차를 디자인하는 데서만 한정하는 것이 아니다. ‘오퍼짓 유나이티드(Opposites United)’가 얘기하는 상반된 개념의 창의적 융합은 단순히 부정적인 것에서 긍정적인 면을 찾거나 그 반대의 의미로 정의되는 것이 아니라, 오히려 경계의 영점Zero Degree을 찾아 나서는 여정에 가깝다. 물과 얼음의 경계, 빛과 그림자의 경계, 가벼움과 무거움의 경계 등과 같은 대비 속에서 예상치 못한 생각과 경험이 새롭게 탄생한다. 이처럼 오퍼짓 유나이티드는 끊임없이 혁신하고, 현재를 과감하게 뒤흔들 용기를 가지고 위험을 감수하며, 새로운 창조적 문화의 ‘영점’에 서고자 하는 것이다. 기아가 생각하는 디자인이란 ‘단순히 아름다운 것’이 아닌 삶의 가치와 철학, 문화 등 세상의 모든 요소를 아우르는 것이라 믿기 때문이다. 기아가 문화예술로 사람들과 소통하는 이유다.

Some may ask why on earth would Kia, a mobility company, organize an art exhibition instead of a car show? The answer to this question can be found in the roots of Kia’s design philosophy. First, Kia’s design philosophy is not limited to automobile design. The creative fusion of opposites, ‘Opposites United’, is not simply defined as finding the positive and negative and mixing them together, but rather a journey to find the very edge of boundaries. Unexpected thoughts and experiences are born from contrasts such as the boundary between water and ice, light and shadow, lightness and heaviness. In this way, ‘Opposites United’ is about constant innovation, taking risks with the courage to boldly disrupt the status quo, and standing at the frontier of a new creative culture. 2024 《Opposites United: Intersections Beyond Boundaries경계 너머의 교차점》 전시는 기아 디자인만의 목소리에 집중했던 지난 전시와 다르게 아티스트들이 오퍼짓 유나이티드를 새롭게 해석했다. 경계 너머의 ‘교차점’을 포착하여 공간에 설치 작품과 퍼포먼스로 채웠다. 이름에서 짐작할 수 있듯, 자신 혹은 세상의 경계를 넘는 아티스트들의 창의적 접근의 이야기를 담고자 한 것.

Unlike previous exhibitions that focused on the voice of Kia Design, the 2024 “Opposites United: Intersections Beyond Boundaries” exhibition is about a new interpretation of Opposites United by artists. The exhibition space was filled with installations and performances that captured the ‘intersections’ beyond boundaries. As the title suggests, the exhibition aims to tell the story of creative approaches of artists who crossed boundaries, within themselves and in the world.


이번 서울에서 열린 전시는 기아의 문화적 활동을 발자취로 형상화한 복도Passage of Footsteps를 시작으로 지치지 않는 혁신가의 공간Room of Relentless Innovators, 창의적 모험가의 공간Room of Creative Risk-takers, 문화의 동반자로서 모든 참여자의 의지와 소통을 융합하는 공간Room of Culture Vanguard으로 관람할 수 있도록 아티스트들의 작품을 체험하게 된다. 또 전시 기간 중 금요일과 토요일 저녁에는 시피카CIFIKA 오토랍Otolab과 쎄싸XEXA, 그리고 아트워크를 선보인 리카르도 베나씨Riccardo Benassi 등 국내외 아티스트들의 퍼포먼스가 진행되어 많은 관람객들의 호응을 얻기도 했다. 지난 전시의 도슨트를 함께 따라 가보자.

The exhibition held in Seoul featured a Passage of Footsteps, a corridor that represents Kia’s cultural activities, followed by the Room of Relentless Innovators, the Room of Creative Risk-takers, and the Room of Culture Vanguard, a space designed to fuse the input and exchanges of all participants who have collaborated on the project.  On Friday and Saturday evenings, performances by local and international artists such as CIFIKA, Otolab, XEXA, and Riccardo Benassi, who presented artwork at the exhibition, were held to the delight of many visitors. 성수동에 위치한 스페이스 S1에 도착하자마 눈길을 사로잡은 건 오퍼짓 유나이티드와 관련된 주요 텍스트가 담긴 작품이었다. ‘Intersections Beyond Boundaries, Relentless Innovators, Creative Risk-takers, Culture Vanguard’ 등 LED를 따라 계속 흐르던 텍스트들이 2호선 전철이 지나가는 순간 요동을 친다. 2024 밀라노 디자인 위크에서는 볼 수 없었던 이 작품은 지상으로 지나가는 전철에 반응하는 인터랙티브 아트워크를 보여준 것.

Upon arriving at the Space S1 in Seongsu-dong, you will notice an LED light artwork displaying key texts related to Opposites United, such as “Intersections Beyond Boundaries, Relentless Innovators, Creative Risk-takers, and Culture Vanguard”. The scrolling text dances around when the Line #2 subway trains are passing. The display, which was not seen at Milan Design Week 2024, is an example of interactive artwork.


한때 공업지대로 유명했던 성수동은 한국에서 가장 트렌디한 공간이 되었다. 공업지역과 상업지역이 공존하는 교차점이 된 성수에는 수많은 이들이 모여든다. 일터로 출근하는 사람들, 팝업스토어와 힙한 카페, 전시 등 문화를 경험하고자 찾는 사람들까지.

Seongsu-dong, formerly an industrial district, has transformed into one of Korea’s most fashionable areas. As an intersection of industrial and commercial areas, Seongsu-dong became a magnet for people with pop-up stores, hip cafes, exhibitions, and other cultural experiences.

어떤 이에게는 역을 오가며 사람들의 이동수단인 전철의 소리가 소음으로 들릴 수도 있고, 또 다른 누군가에게는 소음이 아닌 출발과 도착의 설렘으로 다가올 수도 있다. 기아는 이 소음을 재미 요소로 치환하여 생동감 넘치는 성수의 지역적 특성을 반영했다. 역으로 들어오는 지하철 소리와 정차한 후 떠나는 소리가 들릴 때마다 요동 치는데 이는 마이크를 달아 일정한 데시벨의 소음이 들리면 움직이게 한 것이다. 소음이라는 것 역시 도시경관의 하나이며, 기아가 시도하는 이러한 움직임 역시 누군가에게는 불필요한 소음과 같은 인상을 줄지도 모른다. 하지만 기아는 이 아트워크를 통해 소음마저 의미를 갖고 그것조차 기다림의 대상이 될 수 있을 것이라는 희망을 담아 냈다. 사람들이 살아가는 환경에 반응하는 모습을 연출하여 세상 모든 것이 디자인이 된다고 믿는 기아 디자인 철학이 고스란히 담긴 작품이 아닐까 싶다. 입구에 이 작품을 지나면 ‘Passage of Footsteps’ 공간을 마주하게 된다. 영상에서는 2021년 브랜드 론칭부터 오퍼짓 유나이티드 전시에 대한 이야기가 플레이된다. 기아 디자인 철학이 단순히 차량을 디자인하는 것에 그치지 않고 문화를 지지하는 브랜드로서 문화적인 움직임을 고객과 함께하고 더 나아가 그 흐름을 만들고 이끄는 기아의 의지를 담담하게 보여준다.

While the sound of trains moving between stations might be mere noise to some, it can evoke a sense of excitement for departures and arrivals. Kia wanted to reflect the local character of vibrant Seongsu-dong, by turning the sound of the trains into an element of fun. The microphone attached to the artwork, is programmed to animate the text on the display when the sound of the train reaches a set level as it approaches and leaves the station. Noise is part of the urban landscape, and the artwork by Kia may seem like unnecessary ‘noise’ to some. However, Kia’s intention was that even the sound of a train can have meaning and become something to look forward to, by making it interact with its surroundings. In this regard, the artwork reflects Kia’s design philosophy, that anything in the world can become a design element. After passing through the artwork at the entrance, you will encounter the ‘Passage of Footsteps’ space where a video telling the story of Kia’s new branding launch in 2021 and the exhibition Opposites United is played. The video shows how Kia’s design philosophy is not limited to designing automobiles, and how Kia intends to become a brand that supports culture and is willing to share cultural movements with its customers and create new trends together.

이번 전시는 세 개의 공간으로 구성되어 있는데, 언뜻 보기에 세 명의 아티스트가 ‘오퍼짓 유나이티드’를 주제로 각자의 이야기를 펼친 것 같지만 세 공간에 담긴 스토리는 유기적으로 연결되어 있다. 첫 번째 공간 ‘지치지 않는 혁신가Relentless Innovator’에서는 안나 갈타로싸의 어린시절 상상했던 추상적인 경험의 세계를 인형, 장난감, 뜨개질 등 아날로그적인 키네틱 아트로 풀어냈다. 이를 통해 추상적인 개인의 경험을 관객들이 경험하도록 구상적으로 구현되었다. 두 번째 공간 ‘창의적 모험가Creative Risk-takers’에서는 젊은 시절 영감을 주었던 집단의 경험인 구상적인 기억을 추상적인 디지털 기반의 미디어 설치 작품으로 구현했다. 세 번째 공간 문화의 동반자로서 모든 참여자의 의지와 소통을 융합하는 공간Culture Vanguard에서는 동시대에서 살아가는 우리가 함께 경험한 모두의 문화적 경험에 관해 LED를 이용한 설치작품으로 담아냈다. LED에서 뿜어내는 빛의 향연은 관객과 함께 문화적 경험을 하며 이야기를 나누고자 했다.

The exhibition is organized into three spaces. At first glance, it seems like each of the three artists separately created their own story around the theme of ‘Opposites United’ but the three spaces are connected. In the first space, Relentless Innovator, Anna Galtarossa translates the abstract world of her childhood imagination into analog art of dolls, toys, and knitting. The abstract personal experience is then materialized for the audience to experience. In the second space, Creative Risk-Taker, the collective experiences, and memories that inspired them in their youth are substantiated as abstract and digital media installations. In the third space, Culture Vanguard, a space designed to fuse the input and exchanges from all of the participants, the installation art consists of numerous LED lights that capture the collective cultural experience of all of us living in contemporary times. The mesmerizing lights emanating from the LEDs are designed to communicate with the audience through a shared experience.


기아는 디자인 철학인 오퍼짓 유나이티의 개념을 기반으로 개인과 집단, 과거와 현재의 상반된 관점과 시점에서 교차점을 발견하고자 아티스트의 섭외부터 구성을 기획했다. 오퍼짓 유나이티드를 자신만의 해석으로 담은 세 명의 아티스트 작품들은 개인과 집단, 과거와 현재라는 관점과 시점이 하나로 연결되었다. 이는 상반된 개념을 융합하기 위한 또 한 번의 시도로써 기아가 지향하는 경계의 영점Zero Degree을 한 번 더 확장하는 계기가 되었다.

Based on Kia’s design philosophy of ‘Opposites United’, Kia aimed to explore the intersection of opposing perspectives and different points of view, between the individual and the collective, the past and the present, and recruited artists accordingly. The three artists interpreted ‘Opposites United’ from their own perspectives, connecting the individual and the collective, the past and the present successfully. The exhibition was yet another attempt to fuse opposing concepts, pushing the boundary further.

실내로 들어가서 만나게 되는 첫 전시 공간은 ‘지치지 않는 혁신가Relentless Innovators’다. 이 공간을 채우는 것은 이탈리아 미술가인 안나 갈타로싸Anna Galtarossa의 ‘디스코 정신The Spirit of Disco’다. 기아는 개인과 집단이란 구성으로 이곳에선 작가의 개인적 경험에 의한 작품을 전시했다. 벽과 천장에 가득한 패턴은 이탈리아에 남아 있는 선사 시대의 동굴 벽화에서 영감을 얻어 핸드크래프트로 채웠다. 작가의 개인적 경험이자, 보편적으로 아이들이 어린 시절 잠자리에서 꿈의 이야기를 키네틱 아트로 형상화 한 것이다.

The first exhibition space you’ll encounter is the Relentless Innovator. The room is filled with installation art titled ‘The Spirit of Disco’ by Italian artist Anna Galtarossa. The artwork, inspired by the artist’s personal experiences, represents the individual aspect in the ‘individual and the collective’ subtheme. The hand-crafted patterns on the walls and ceiling are inspired by prehistoric cave paintings found in Italy. While the kinetic art is rooted in the artist’s personal childhood experiences, it also resonates universally, as such imaginative play is common among children.

천장에 매달린 인형, 장난감, 뜨개질 등이 이어지며 어쩌면 악몽 속 유령으로 느껴질지도 모르는데, 무의식 속 세계를 만화경적 구도로 감상할 수 있다. 특히 그녀의 작품에 더욱 빠져들게 하는 사운드가 한몫 하는데 이는 니콜라스 베커 Nicolas Becker와의 페어링(협업)으로 빚어낸 조합이다. 이 전시 공간에서는 SNS 카메라를 통해 가상으로 구현된 유령 형체도 볼 수 있다. 갓을 쓴 한국 유령도 볼 수 있다. 벽면에는 100원짜리 동전 하나가 숨긴 듯 붙여져 있는데 실제로 작가가 ‘이순신’이라는 역사적 인물에 대한 존경심을 담은 것이라고. 그래서 관람객들도 자유롭게 벽면에 자신만의 스토리를 풀어 놓을 수 있다.

The dolls, toys, knitting, and other objects hanging on the ceiling might seem like ghosts in a nightmare for some, but represent stories from the subconscious mind. The kaleidoscopic composition of this dreamlike world is what makes her work so compelling. The sound of her work, created in collaboration with renowned composer and sound engineer Nicolas Becker, is especially immersive. In the exhibition space, you can also see ghostly figures; a Korean grim reaper wearing traditional clothes, can be seen through social media cameras using augmented reality technology. A single 100-won coin which has an engraving of Admiral Yi Sun-sin, is hidden on the wall as the artist’s tribute to the legendary military hero. It also serves as an invitation for visitors to write graffiti on the wall.

안나 갈타로사를 지치지 않는 혁신가로 소개한 데에는 작가의 작품 활동에서 볼 수 있다. 키네틱 아티스트이자 다큐멘터리 연출가이자 태피스트리 아티스트 등 광범위한 활동을 하는 그야말로 경계를 허물고 기꺼이 새로운 방식으로 행동하는 혁신가가 아닐 수 없다.

Anna Galtarosa is a tireless innovator, and it shows in her work. A kinetic artist, documentary filmmaker, tapestry artist, and more, she is an innovator who is willing to break boundaries and find new ways.

감정을 장소로 물질화함으로써 새로운 시공간을 소멸한다. 이 시공간은 작가의 주목할 만한 기억과 그 중 기억에 남는 것을 상상하거나 기억의 재료들을 한 조각씩 이어 코팅해낸 공간이자 꿈과 희망이 분명하기 짝없는 이야기와 신화 등 다층적인 공간에 자기 삶의 경험에 대한 복잡한 토템적 우주를 여러 층으로 구성했다. 작가의 우주는 ‘니콜라스 베커’의 사운드 트랙과 함께 조립 공간의 한계를 확장하는 환경을 겹쳐 쌓이는 직조해냈다.

‘The Spirit of Disco’
Anna Galtarosa creates a new space-time by materializing emotions into a physical space. The installation art is created by patching pieces of her memories and her imagination based on the memories. The result is a complex totemic universe of her own life experiences in a multi-layered space of stories and myths, full of dreams and hopes. The artist’s universe is weaved together with a soundtrack by Nicholas Becker, which pushes the limits of installation art in the exhibition space.

조각과 설치 미술 작업을 하며 주로 키네틱 아트를 작업해 오고 있다. 뉴욕과 베로나를 오가며 활동하며, 2004년부터 스펜서 브라운스톤 갤러리 Spencer Brown Stone Gallery의 대표 작가로 해온 작가는 아르테 컨템포라네오 Arte Contemporáneo의 특별 프로젝트로 떠다니는 여행형 꿈의 도시인 칠리 문 타운 투어 Chili Moon Town Tour와 밀라노 람브라테 Milan Lambrate에서 2년 동안 매일 사용된 30m 샹들리에가 있는 홈리스 로켓 Homeless Rocket With Chandeliers과 같은 대규모 공공 프로젝트를 연출해오고 있다.

About Anna Galtarossa
She works with sculpture and installation art, mainly kinetic art. She works between New York and Verona, The artist, who has been the featured artist at Spencer Brown Stone Gallery since 2004, has been featured in the special project of Arte Contemporáneo, Chili Moon Town Tour, a floating dream city, and Homeless Rocket, a 30-meter chandelier that was used every day for two years at Milan Lambrate. He has directed large-scale public projects such as With Chandeliers.

두 번째 전시 공간 ‘창의적 모험가Creative Risk-takers’에서는 집단적 경험의 이야기가 펼쳐진다. 이 공간을 채운 작가 역시 이탈리아 출신이자 독일 베를린을 주무대로 활동하는 리카르도 베나씨Riccardo Benassi로 위험을 감수하고 내면을 표출하는 방식을 영상 설치물 ‘데일리 덴스 댄스 데시다리오Daily Dense Dance Desidario’로 구현했다. ‘Desidario’는 이탈리아어로 열정을 뜻하는데, 이 작품은 작가가 젊은 시절 새로운 시도의 계기가 된 중요한 기억 단편들, 열정적으로 활동했던 시절을 형상화했다. 작가가 활동하기 전에 그는 DJ 뮤지션 활동했다. 그 안에서 울려퍼지던 라이브 음악, 그 음악에 심취한 채로 빼곡하게 춤추던 사람들의 모습을 담아내고 있다.

In the second exhibition space, Creative Risk-Taker, stories of collective experiences unfold. The artist who created this space is Riccardo Benassi, an Italian-born, Berlin-based artist. The video installation ‘Daily Dense Dance Desidario’ embodies the idea of taking risks and expressing oneself. The word ‘desidario’ means passion in Italian, and the work represents a series of fragments of important memories from the artist’s early days that inspired him to chase new experiences. Before becoming a multidisciplinary artist, he worked as a DJ, and this work depicts the live music that he played in the dance halls and people dancing passionately, immersed in the music.

특히 이 작품은 형형색색 변하는 LED 속으로 들어가면 작가의 메시지가 담긴 텍스트 속에서 젊은 시절의 이야기를 만나보게 된다. 밖으로 다시 나와 조금 거리를 두고 작품을 감상하다 보면 사운드에 따라서 춤을 추는 사람들의 모습, 열광하는 관객의 모습으로 마주하게 된다.

When you step into the colorful LED lights, you are invited to read the story of the artist’s youth through his messages in text. When you step back outside of the light and look at the work from a distance, you see people dancing to the sounds and the audience getting excited.

‘데일리 덴스 댄스 데시다리오(Daily Dense Dance Desidario)’
뮤지션일 때 만났던 젊은 친구들의 이야기를 디지털적인 아름다움의 컨셉트로 표현했다. 현실을 가상으로 표현하는 위험을 거대하고 인간끼리의 순간을 라이브 음악을 조작하여 춤추는 사람들의 몸에서 나오는 것처럼 보이는 시적인 텍스트를 연속적으로 풀어냈다. 시간이 무관하거나 멈춘듯한 그의 영상 설치물과 사운드 및 스크린에 흥미로운 내용은 각 개인의 환경을 공유하도록 유도합니다. 이는 개인의 경험을 집단의 경험으로 모두에게 결합되도록 내재되어 있는 순간의 순간을 기억하게 할 수 있을 만큼 뛰어났다.

‘Daily Dense Dance Desidario‘
His work expresses the stories of young friends he met when he worked as a musician in digital medium. He took the risk of expressing emotions between humans virtually using a digital medium, by displaying poetic text messages that seem to emerge from the people dancing to the live music performance. His video installations, which seem to make time feel irrelevant or suspended, and the sound and screen invite you to share individual experiences. 세 번째 공간은 ‘문화의 동반자로서 모든 참여자의 의지와 소통을 융합하는 공간Culture Vanguard’이라는 테마로 지금, 현재, 여기서 모두의 문화적 경험과 이야기를 나누고자 하는 기획으로 구성되었다. 공간은 3D 볼류메트릭 LED 아티스트그룹 레드펄스LED Pulse가 ‘드래곤 유니버스The DragonO Universe’라는 설치 작품으로 채우고 있다. 아티스트와 프로그래머, 오디오 디렉터 등이 모인 이 집단은 LED 기술을 바탕으로, 유기체와 같은 빛의 향연을 보여주는데, 이번 전시에서는 ‘유한과 무한’이라는 개념에 착안해 현실과 디지털 기술이 결합된 공간에서 인간과 디지털 세계 속 생물이 조우하는 것처럼 상반된 것들이 끊임없이 작용하는 작품을 탄생시켰다. 설치된 LED가 언뜻 용의 형상처럼 보이는데 이 LED가 하나씩 움직이면서 사운드와 함께 펼쳐져 작품이기도 하지만, 하나의 무대 속으로 들어온 듯하다.

The third space, ‘Culture Vanguard’, is designed to fuse the input and exchanges from all participants as cultural partners, through sharing the cultural experiences and stories of everyone involved. The space hosts ‘DragonO Universe’, a LED installation art by 3D volumetric LED artist group LED Pulse. The artists collaborated with programmers, and audio directors to create a dynamic feast of light. In this exhibition, the contrast of the finite and the infinite is explored, leading to a work through which opposites constantly interact, such as the encounters between people and creatures using digital technology. The LED installation art has some resemblance to a dragon at first glance, but each LED light moves in response to sound, making it function as a stage as well.

실제로 전시 기간동안 이곳에서 한국의 일렉트로니카 아티스트 시피카CIFIKA, 이탈리아의 오디오-비주얼 협업 그룹 오토랩OTOLAB, 아프리카계 포르투갈 연주자이자 종합 디지털 아티스트인 쎄사XEXA의 공연이 펼쳐지기도 했다.

South Korean electronica artist CIFIKA, Italian audio-visual collaborative group OTOLAB, and Afro-Portuguese performer and multidisciplinary digital artist XEXA made music performances at the exhibition space.

‘드래곤 유니버스(The DragonO Universe)’
수많은 요소들이 관계를 맺고 디지털과 현실을 결합해 독특한 형태의 환경을 만들어 낸다. 특허받은 뉴런 LED 기술은 공간을 닮은 기계로 된 용과 같이 살아 있는 분리형으로 꿈같은 형태다. 레드펄스의 괴물에서 개인의 경계는 무한하고 외곽처럼 되는 것이며, 기술의 유토피아와 일상 사이의 경계가 사라지고 결국 하나가 된다.

‘The DragonO Universe‘
Digital technologies and reality are intertwined to create new types of unique environments. The patented Neuron LED technology makes it possible to create an out of this world mechanical dragon-like shape. The creature created by the LED Pulse demonstrates that the boundaries of the individual become infinite and peripheral, and the boundaries between technological utopia and mundane everyday life disappear and eventually merge into one.

사물 간의 결합으로 긴장과 이완을 통해 창의적인 낯섦을 창조한 대표적인 작품 르네 마그리트R. Magritte의 ‘헤겔의 휴일’. 물이 담긴 유리잔과 비와 연관된 우산을 결합하여 물이라는 유사성, 물을 담는 유리잔과 물을 막는 우산의 조합으로 모순을 창조한 작품입니다. 예술은 현상의 맥락을 이해하는 것에 그치지 않고 기존의 현상을 새롭게 창조하고 재구성하는 과정은 숙명인지도 모르겠습니다. 2024년 성수에 열린 기아의 《Opposites United: Intersections Beyond Boundaries》 전시에서 이점을 느낄 수 있었습니다. 기존 예술의 문법을 따르지 않고 자신들만의 다양한 문화적 시도를 극대화하며 자신들의 예술 세계를 기꺼이 전복시키며 새로운 창의적 접근으로 탄생한 작품들이 잘 말해준다는 생각이 듭니다. 이로써 기아 디자인 철학인 오퍼짓 유나이티드도 한 단계 확장되었다고 볼 수 있지 않을까요. 세상의 모든 요소를 아우르는 디자인을 선보이고자 하는 기아의 디자인 철학 오퍼짓 유나이티드는 아티스트와의 경계를 넘는 창의성과 맞닿아 있기 때문입니다.

Epilogue
René Magritte’s Hegel’s Holiday’ is a classic example of how a combination of objects creates creative strangeness through tension and relaxation. In the painting, a glass filled with water standing on top of an open umbrella, creates an amusing contradiction of objects with two opposing functions, one repelling water and the other containing water. Perhaps art is not only about understanding the context of a phenomenon, but also about creating and reorganizing existing phenomena. This is evident in Kia’s ‘Opposites United: Intersections Beyond Boundaries’ exhibition at Seongsu-dong in 2024. We believe the works that were created by artists who refuse to follow the formula of conventional art, who are bold, and willing to subvert their own achievements in the past, demonstrate successful creation. In short, the artwork speaks for itself. The exhibition marks a new step forward in the realization of Kia’s design philosophy, Opposites United, which aims to present designs that encompass all elements of the world and strives to pursue creativity that crosses boundaries in partnership with artists.
