An Unknown Ecosystem Derived from One’s Inner Self
HA I I HWA (河二二火), a plant artist and art director, creates new “alien plants” inspired by the diverse forms and lines of plants, which to her are like a microcosm of nature. The alien plants and their strange shapes, which might appear from a science fiction movie, were born out of the artist’s release of her inner feelings. She creates new forms of artwork by approaching them from an East Asian perspective that recognizes what is below the surface and searches for internal value. Recently, HA I I HWA was invited to the FLORA International Flower Festival in Cordoba, Spain, where she presented her alien plants under the theme of “plant intelligence.” Her alien plants, which originated from the artist’s inner self, not only showcase an unfamiliar beauty but also expand in the direction of eliciting stories about the nature of the future. From the origins of alien plants to their future, HA I I HWA sat down with us to talk about the new ecosystems she is creating.

Q1.
Q1.
The name HA I I HWA (河二二火) is very unique.
What is the meaning of water and fire in your name?
I favor contrasting and opposing relationships in my work. Water and fire are the two opposites in nature that resonate most with me. They’re both words that I’m drawn to—and they have opposite meanings—so when I put them together, I put the Chinese character for “two” (二) twice in my name to emphasize them a bit more. Ultimately, I chose this name to represent opposite images in nature.
Q2.
Q2.
You previously worked as a graphic designer
and planned visuals as an art director.
What inspired you to start working with alien plants?
When I was working as a designer, I felt pressured to represent things that weren’t mine. After working in that job for quite a while, those feelings became overwhelming, and I suffered from burnout. At the time, I started to work through these feelings by transforming a world in my head into my artwork, and that’s how these alien plants were born for me. When I looked at the result of my spontaneous work, I realized that it looked like something from outer space, which is why I named it as such. And because I love my first work so much, I still use a picture of that work for my Instagram profile.
Q3.
Q3.
There must be many remarkable aspects of
using plants in your work.
What do you find interesting about
using plants as a material?
Plants all have their own unique aspects and lines to them. Even the same species can look different depending on where they’re grown. Furthermore, it’s also interesting how you can change the image by adjusting the size or angle of the plants. When I create an alien plant, I start by imagining what its personality would be like. That personality is formed from my emotions; I choose colors and materials accordingly. I try to use a variety of plants without overlapping them as much as possible. I use live plants to show their personality as a single entity or to create a sense of flow and curvaceousness. On the other hand, I use artificial plants for works that need to be maintained for a long time or for installations that show symmetry, continuity, and regularity.

Q4.
Q4.
The impression of strangeness and mystery
fits the term “alien plants.”
I was very impressed when I heard that
Eastern art and Buddhism were the root of this new life form.
I’ve always been interested in Eastern art and Buddhism because I value the awe of realizing something and having a huge rush overcome me. I was particularly influenced by Eastern art and Buddhism in terms of their respect for human beings, the emphasis on the inner self, the pursuit of harmony between humans and nature, and the beauty of empty space.
Q5.
Q5.
Last October, you were the first Korean artist
to be invited to participate in
the FLORA International Flower Festival
in Cordoba, Spain, which made big news.
What kind of work did you present there?
The FLORA Festival selects a theme every year and invites global artists to install works that address the theme in a specific space. This year’s theme was “plant intelligence,” which asks how far artificial intelligence will approach human life while also looking at the nature of plants at this point in time and dealing with what we can learn from them. I visited Cordoba and exhibited a work that showed an artificial look of nature. Cordoba is a city that has been very influenced by Islamic culture over the centuries. That was particularly evident in the Palace of Viana, where I exhibited. I installed the work in the palace’s most beautiful and feminine courtyard and played geomungo music on-site. I wanted to create an alien atmosphere by installing alien plants together with East Asian music. At the same time, I tried to convey the plight of the plants together with the mournful sound of geomungo. I also wanted to give visitors to the exhibition space a sense of awareness of a situation in which artificial intelligence involves itself, even with plants.
Q6.
Q6.
In addition to naturally originating plants,
your alien plants often feature metals and electronic parts.
What kind of synergy do you expect to
bring in utilizing materials
with completely opposite characteristics?
I believe that I can create visual stimulation through a form of nature that we don’t typically experience in our everyday lives. My work can be seen as a realistic representation of nature that might appear in the future or a fantasy that exists in our imagination. As I continued to work, I wanted my dystopian work to have a positive effect on nature ultimately—I wanted to create an opportunity for people to think about this artificial form of nature. I couldn’t use plants alone to create something new, so I started to use metals and electronic parts to create disparate combinations.

Q7.
Q7.
Collaborating with artists and brands from different fields
must involve a process of creating
another touchpoint for your alien plants.
Can you tell us about
a particularly memorable collaboration?
I loved collaborating with the fashion designer MINJUKIM. When I was working on her collection, which was inspired by the Princess Bari tale, I was fascinated by how she reinterpreted the Korean folk tale, and I could relate to the story a lot. According to the traditional story, the king and queen, who wanted a son, abandoned their seventh child when the queen gave birth to a daughter. Later, when they contract a disease that will kill them, the formerly abandoned Princess Bari sets out to find a cure to save her parents. The cure she needs comes in the form of a mythical reincarnation flower. In my collaboration with MINJUKIM, I worked on accessories for the fashion show and photoshoot using this reincarnation flower as the motif. On top of that, I was inspired to create a personal work called Extraterrestrial Plant: Jokduri. In the Princess Bari tale, there are various emotions that she goes through, such as the courage to go on a journey to save her parents, the fear and psychological pressure she experiences along the way, and the ecstasy and joy of finally getting what she wants. Alien Plant: Jokduri expresses the inner self of Princess Bari, in which both the light and dark sides intersect, through the transformation of the jokduri, a traditional bride’s headpiece.

Q8.
Q8.
How do your alien plant works
—sporophytes, alien trees, alien fungi, alien icebergs, etc.—
from different exhibitions and projects
connect and form an ecosystem?
When you collect each alien plant and bring them together, they eventually exist in one ecosystem. Sometimes, I think that it’s like nature being preserved in a refrigerator. In other words, different alien plants live under artificial light instead of natural light, like the sun. So when you first encounter these kinds of plants, they may seem like a breath of fresh air, but when you recognize the technological development in these artificial plants and climate change in our world, you’ll ask yourself, “Is this change really okay?”

Q9.
Q9.
I’m curious about the future of alien plants.
Tell us about the direction
you’d like to take them in the future.
I’ve been mainly working on individual pieces, but now I plan to expand into installations in specific spaces. I’m putting a lot of thought into curating an exhibition space and how the alien plants I’ve been working on can exist within it.
