Q1.
Q1.
I heard that you started ballet in the 5th grade because it was fun. What was the driving force behind this and the allure that made you want to continue with ballet for so long?
When I was young, I had a chance to learn many things besides ballet. I learned piano, vocal music, violin, taekwondo, gymnastics, and tennis. I even became a track and field athlete. All of that was boring for me, though. Ballet, on the other hand, was anything but boring. Thinking back now, when it comes to art, you can’t beat anyone or set any records. I think there was an allure to finding my own style alone. Above all, I had to fully focus on myself. I think I liked sympathizing with others and communicating what I felt with them.

Q2.
Q2.
Classical ballet is a dance developed based on the body and culture of Westerners. I’ve heard that the stories behind ballet, the movements that ballet aims for, and the optimal physical structure for it are very different from those of Korean dance. I’m curious about the unfamiliar and disparate aspects that you experienced when facing this dance from another culture as an Asian.
Ballet was born in the West, and more than anything else the performer’s body line and strength are very important in this art form. In fact, I wasn’t born with a very good physique for ballet. But this is art. It’s not just movements that display the line of the body; you have to exhibit some kind of emotion or philosophy in the way you move. In order to handle my inferiority complex about my body—and compensate for my weaknesses—I thought a lot about putting my emotions and philosophy into dancing. When I won the Benoit de la Danse, the judges’ panel seemed to feel that an Asian’s way of expressing characters in classical ballet was very delicate and uniquely attractive.
Q3.
Q3.
It would appear you are very interested in the past, things that have accumulated value over the years, and sentiments we used to revel in.
I think I gained the opportunity to grow into an artist and find various ways to think about ballet even more due to the fact that I was neither beautiful nor a perfect fit physically for ballet. My inferiority complex ended up providing healthy nourishment. It was the driving force of my efforts to make up for my deficiencies and also the strength to find my own expressive power. On top of that, when I tried to overcome the limitations of my artistic expression abilities, an unexploded bomb-like energy inside me gave me strength.
Q4.
Q4.
In June 2022, you performed Révérence to celebrate the 25th anniversary of your debut. I’ve heard that the word “reverence,” which means deep respect and is a respectful way to greet someone in France, refers to the movement of a ballet dancer bending her knees to the audience at a curtain call after the performance. I wonder why you prepared a performance under this title.
I originally created Révérence in my mind’s eye as a performance to be presented in a practice room. I wanted to thank the practice room. Behind the two hours of my performance in front of audiences, I spent a good amount of time in the practice room 365 days a year, all the way from my childhood to now, in joy and in sorrow. Furthermore, I wished to thank everyone I met while working as a professional dancer throughout those 25 years. I also felt the need to express my gratitude to fellow dancers and all the staff who helped me deliver my story through dancing over the years. At the same time, I wanted to appreciate my physical condition in that I can still dance in my pointe shoes despite the countless injuries I suffered over the years.
Q5.
Q5.
From what I understand, there’s a fixed way to carry out a reverence, but I also know that each individual dancer can present their own distinct reverence, almost like a cadenza in classical music. In the world of ballet, where rules have been strictly observed over a very long history, what part in your opinion allows for the free expression of individuality and one’s own unique characteristics?
In classical ballet, a lot of ballet performers have danced fixed choreography to fixed music over a long period of time. The reason why classical performances are difficult is that there are obvious answers to what is right and wrong, kind of like a textbook. If you make a mistake, you make a mistake, and if you don’t perform the number of pirouettes you had aimed to do, you don’t make it. The height of the legs should not be too low or too high. As a result, we need to get deeper into the interpretation of art. But I think that’s the point where ballet expands outside the proverbial box. As I practice endlessly, I have to make my physical actions move toward perfection, practice over and over again, and instill the music into my body and movements. I think it’s up to each ballet dancer to express their feelings after taking the time to deeply understand a piece of work. For example, the way I dance is more of a process-focused dance than a result of moving a certain way. I tend to be delicate and a perfectionist in the process. How I move from one pose to another, and how and why I turn my eyes…the meaning, cause, and breathing in doing so are all important. I think those opportunities for differences represent the real moments of freedom in classical ballet.
Q6.
Q6.
From The One, the duet performance with choreographer Jeong-yun Lee in commemoration of your 10th anniversary of working for the Korean National Ballet and art director Kuk Soo-ho’s music play Sado: The Story of Crown Prince in 2007, to Joowon Kim’s Sagunja: The Season of Life for Jeongdong Theater’s 25th anniversary in 2020, you have been steadily working with dancers in the field of Korean dance. What are the characteristics and allure of Korean dance that are different from ballet? I imagine there are some unexpected similarities, too.
I didn’t have a chance to learn Korean dance when I was young because I went to Russia when I was in middle school. Then I worked with Kuk Soo-ho and Jeong-yun Lee in the Korean National Ballet. Ballet is a Western art that begins with the human desire to fly into the sky. However, Korean dance is more closely tied to the land. It was so different from the beginning, but it was fun. What I felt while dancing together with those other dancers as part of Korean dance was that the two dance genres are the same at the end of the day. Depending on how perfectly aware I am of my weight and breathing while touching the floor, I can dance as if there’s no gravity holding me down. At the same time, I can appear as if a dancer attached to the floor depending on how lightly I control my body. Ultimately, I think that the dancer’s breathing at a certain level is very similar regardless of the genre. People think ballet shows some breaks in breathing because it has accents, but my breathing is always one fluid motion, from the beginning to the end of the dance, and right up until I leave the stage. It’s the same in Korean dance.
Q7.
Q7.
Since winning the Best New Actress Award for the musical Contact in 2010, you have worked with creators in various fields, such as the musical Phantom and the play The Picture of Dorian Gray. What goes through your head when facing all the differences of a new and unfamiliar world?
Attempts to throw myself into a new work and new environment like a play or musical seem to serve as a great opportunity for learning and inspiration for me. I want to flow rather than remain static. When I was in the Korean National Ballet, I was an exemplary member. (laughs) But after I left the ballet company I realized, Oh, I really like dancing. I can even be a square or a triangle in an environment where I can dance. Yeah, I really love dancing. Communicating [through dancing] is so important.

Q8.
Q8.
With its long history and many traditions, what is the source of power of ballet in approaching today’s audiences and in keeping it alive?
I think there’s definitely a certain energy—or messages even—from something carefully worked on and matured over a long period of time. When a dancer who has practiced for an extremely long time dances on stage, the energy of all that time and effort is contained in the dance itself and conveyed to the audience. Today, the world is changing very rapidly. With things moving so fast, I think there’s a sense of tranquility, an unknown comfort, and a sense of relaxation when coming across any final product that has been worked on for a long time. I think that’s why classical ballet is still loved by many people.
