Sensitive Experiments with Crafts
When it comes to artists pushing the boundaries of crafts, Jongdae Ryu is one of the best-known cases. He has been utilizing new digital technologies, for example, by incorporating 3D printing with traditional woodworking to create a variety of works. For those who expect handmade results from crafts, the term “digital crafts” (used to describe Ryu’s work) may seem like a contradictory combination of words. However, visual art critic Choi Bum, who has long been following Jongdae Ryu’s work, says that Ryu’s work has made him rethink the role of a person’s hand. “If traditional crafts are hand-made crafts, Jongdae Ryu’s work is a hand-initiated craft,” Choi has said. Ryu’s work, which fuses hand-based skills and digital technologies, is a good example of how we can utilize new cutting-edge technologies for traditional crafts. Kia Design Magazine caught up with Ryu to talk to him about his digital crafts, which he started doing in earnest in 2017, and caught a glimpse into a new world of crafts that incorporates new technologies.

Q1.
Q1.
There’s something fresh and unexpected about your works that incorporate the use of 3D printing in woodworking. Can you tell us about how you became interested in 3D printing and started working with it?
I fell into working with 3D printing after being influenced by my experience designing yachts for a company. The field of crafts is one with a lot of analog elements, while yacht design is a field replete with digital production techniques. Working with these opposites made me curious, so I asked myself: If I combine the two, can I create new results that I haven’t seen before? I started working on digital crafts in earnest by combining woodworking and 3D printing as part of an artist residency in Japan, where I was on an international exchange program in 2017.
Q2.
Q2.
It appears you have your own mindset when it comes to using new technologies. When you compare your handmade crafts to your digital crafts, how much of your work is now digital?
3D printing became widely known to the public when it grew to be considered one of the revolutionary technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution era. That being said, it’s not as simple as pushing a button, like a vending machine, or even as useful as people initially expected it to be. I approached it from the perspective that it’s one of the newest tools that has different outcomes and different utilities depending on how you use it. I thought it could be a new area of crafts and design if it could be utilized effectively to reflect the socio-cultural characteristics of the contemporary world. My digital crafts are mainly done with 3D printers, but for assembly, finishing, and unique textures, I work by hand. Sometimes 3D printing techniques are a big part of the process, and other times my work includes a lot of manual labor. In short, it’s characterized by a combination of digital techniques and skills which makes use of one’s hands.
Q3.
Q3.
You’re known for works like D-Soban and Moon Jar, both of which utilize digital technology but also have traditional elements to them. I’m curious to know what parts of tradition inspire you to develop your crafts in a contemporary way.
Since digital technologies are generally considered difficult to use and there are barriers to entry, I thought about how to deal with the possibilities of these technologies in a more familiar way. I felt that Korean and other traditional elements such as roof tiles would be familiar to anyone in Korea, so I worked on D-Soban, a table with a top made of solid wood and legs designed in the form of roof tiles. This was the first time I really started working with the theme of digital crafts. I also pursued another work, Digital Heritage, in which I reinterpreted Korean wooden furniture with digital technology and used 3D printers to reinforce the structure or to redesign decorative elements. Furthermore, I used such motifs in my solo exhibition Control-C/Control-V, which I held in March 2023 after winning the Korea Craft & Design Foundation’s annual competition. During my childhood in the 1980s, I lived in a tile-roofed house in the middle of the city with several generations of my family. I think this influenced the formative language I’m familiar with today as an artist. In addition to functional objects and furniture, I also experimented with reinterpreting spaces and concepts from my memory.

Q4.
Q4.
What is the most important part of your work process?
When I first start a project, I put the most importance on the process of conception, something which isn’t that different from traditional crafts, until I get an idea in my head and sketch it out. Then I work on digital mock-ups to turn the sketches into 3D models. In doing so, I have to translate the digital language for 3D printing, and then I make test productions to make sure models are going to be produced the way I’d envisioned them. This usually doesn’t happen in one go. It’s more often a series of revisions as I put results together or finish them by hand. In some ways, my work process is more inconvenient than traditional methods.
Q5.
Q5.
In addition to wood, metal, and glass, you use sustainable bioplastics and a variety of industrial materials, so it seems like digital crafts have expanded your material choices. What materials do you use most often these days?
There are many areas of crafts, but ultimately they involve handling and studying materials, so while doing woodworking, I try to incorporate metal and ceramic materials or fuse them with glass. Bioplastics are biodegradable materials made from corn starch. I’ve been making objects out of bioplastics, changing them with ceramics or glass, and distributing them as craft and design products to see how the public receives them. I’ve been experimenting with what I can make with digital crafts, bit by bit, in terms of functionality and artistic value. I’m using a lot of wood and bioplastics these days and focusing on working with recycled materials. I’ve also been experimenting with different things because I’m curious to see, for example, if I can dry chestnut shells or shrimp shells to make them into solids or if I can make biodegradable materials using plant-based materials in a DIY way.

Q6.
Q6.
Can we talk about sustainability through new materials in crafts?
Yes. At first, many people were very unfamiliar with bioplastics, but I think they’ve become used to them as more and more works made with these materials are entering department stores and art shops in museums. In terms of sustainability, there are also works that use biodegradable materials or upcycling works to recycle things that would otherwise be thrown away. Recently, I’ve been interested in the life cycle of objects. I think making objects that have a long lifespan is also a sustainable thing to do in the field of crafts.
Q7.
Q7.
You’re expanding your craft with 3D printing. Have you thought about what is next? What new technologies can you apply further?
Changes and developments will continue and I will be able to use numerous new technologies. I’ve been working with crafts for a long time, but I’ve also been working in industrial design for over a decade, so I’ve been naturally exposed to a lot of industrial technologies, like waterjet technology and ultra-precise laser technology. In the future, it’s possible I’ll use these technologies in my designs and digital crafts. I’m also driven by trying to properly blend Korean history and culture with effectively delivering messages to the public by innovatively instrumentalizing new technologies.

Q8.
Q8.
Even with all the cutting-edge technologies out there, is there anything you would keep the same as a craft artist?
I want to maintain a mindset of being interested in and observing the objects we need in our lives. This could be art furniture or crafts with multiple functions. Ultimately, I want to have fun trying to cross boundaries while making objects and installations. Digital crafts may still be unfamiliar to some, but I want to show people that it will soon be a tool that we all use in our daily lives.

Q9.
Q9.
I’m also curious about your future exhibition plans.
In September, I’ll be exhibiting at the Cheongju Craft Biennale, and I’m planning to exhibit at the Korean Cultural Center in Tokyo next year.
