Towards Art for Communication beyond Boundaries
The premiere 1) of a contemporary music piece is occasionally staged at a classical concert. When the music of a living composer is first presented, the audience comes face to face with a new world and the composer attempts a new form of communication. Contemporary music composer and conductor Jaehyuck Choi says that it is important to go beyond the boundaries of music and not to be confined to a specific category of art. The contemporary music group ensemble blank, which he leads, is also dreaming of growing into an artistic group and being something more than just a group of musicians.

Q1.
Q1.
How did you start the ensemble blank in 2015?
It got off the ground when four musical friends I met at the Juilliard School got together to form a chamber music group. In order to preserve our own distinctiveness, we mainly played contemporary music rather than classical music, but we gradually fell hard for the charm of contemporary music. The ensemble blank has now grown into a contemporary music group with 17 members.
Q2.
Q2.
The ensemble blank was selected for an artist-in-residence by The House Concert. What did you focus on when organizing the concert program?
We spent a lot of time and energy thinking about how to share our love for music with audiences unfamiliar with contemporary music. We believed that stories are necessary to approach the public in an amicable way, so there’s a theme for each concert. For the first stage performance, we prepared a program to cover pieces from the Middle Ages all the way up to a living composer’s music. This enables the audience to feel historical changes in the beauty of music. We planned it this way for audiences to shed light on the fact that classical music and today’s contemporary music both have roots.
Q3.
Q3.
You talk about a larger category of art beyond music. Tell us about the goals of the ensemble blank. Do you have any plans to work with other areas of art?
In the future, we’d like to grow into an art group, not merely a music group. We’re also preparing collaborative projects which will include sound artists and visual artists for 2023 and 2024. Sound artists refer to composers, while visual artists refer to artists in various fields, such as dance, painting, sculpture, video art, graphics, and fashion. These will be projects to publicly recruit young artists from different fields to highlight integrated art or to create art while sharing our influences in real-time.
Q4.
Q4.
Many people think that contemporary music is difficult to understand. What kind of effort do you make to communicate with audiences?
You may feel something new is difficult because you’re not used to it. When you think about an art experience being easy, the concept of “easy” to understand may be an illusion arising from familiarity. I believe that all art experiences should be fun. Artists should be able to share emotions with people and touch their hearts without showing an authoritative attitude, and communication plays a vital role in this process. Rather than emphasizing the artistry of the work, we need to communicate by creating a personal connection so that the experience can soon become a memory. By achieving this, you can lead audiences to imagine, and freely share art with them. I think that the process should be spectacular and immersive as a whole.
Q5.
Q5.
We have heard that you often receive inspiration from paintings when you compose music. How do you cultivate inspiration and give form to that feeling?
Wherever you go, there’s always an art museum. I stand in front of a painting and imagine what kind of sound it might contain. The sound inside me is then reconstructed and pops into my head. Based on my experience with the work, other experiences I’ve had accumulate, one upon the other. Who knows? Maybe it’s the sound of the picture I interpreted. When I return home with that sound in mind, I trim it from different angles, write it down on some staff paper, and go through the process of examining it again. The reason I don’t use a computer and write with a pen on the staff paper is because it allows much greater autonomy. There are parts to composing music that a computer doesn’t allow for, and if I follow what the computer’s doing it will dominate me. In addition, if I can easily look back on what I wrote, it becomes harder for me to develop my inner ear. What’s more, if you work on computer sound as you create the sound you imagined, the direction of the piece may also change from your original idea.
Q6.
Q6.
When you won the composition category at the Concours de Genève, you presented Nocturne 4) in a new way. What does an artist need to make this shift in thinking?
There’s a saying that creation starts with discontent. I wrote the work with jealousy and a rebellious spirit. I thought, Why does Chopin get to monopolize the word “Nocturne”? (Laughs) I think an artist should have a constantly rebellious spirit. That’s the only way to make development possible.

Q7.
Q7.
Is it the same when you work on a commissioned piece?
It’s a pleasure to receive a commission for a work. It means a client is interested in my art and wants to know more about me. Obviously, the client commissions me to write music with a certain degree of expectation, but deviating from that expectation makes composing fun. I can also avoid repeating my own way of working. Of course, I can’t say that repetition is bad, but I think pursuing one form of aesthetics to perfection is something you can do alone. So, when I create commissioned music, I deviate for a while, and through this process I discover another self.
Q8.
Q8.
What are the best and worst attitudes to have as a musician?
The best one to have is not being scared to imagine something really big without losing your sense of curiosity, while the worst attitude to have is to pigeonhole your ideas into a certain framework. I believe that everything should be looked at as free and open.
Q9.
Q9.
Can you tell us about the ensemble blank’s long-term goals and your own goals as a composer and conductor?
Although the ensemble blank started off in Korea, there are wonderful spaces around the world just waiting for us. The ensemble blank aims to be a group in which artists can freely experiment, as well as an art group for the integration and convergence of many different arts. Basic ideas for politics, philosophy, and economics are born from art, so our lives become more enriched when art grows with the appropriate support. As a composer and conductor, my ultimate goal is to become someone people want to perform art together with.
1) The first performance of a work after its composition. It is divided into different types, including a world premiere and its first presentation in each country.
2) A performance venue provides a stage for performers so that they can develop and experiment with their repertoire, helping shed light on their music world. Residency programs are usually granted on an annual basis.
3) A non-profit cultural organization in Seoul which started its “House Concert” at a house in Yeonhui-dong in 2002. The House Concert is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2022, and today a regular concert is held at ARKO Artist House in Daehak-ro, Seoul. At the concert, performers and audiences become one, without boundaries, between the stage and seats.
4) A musical composition with sweet, romantic melodies that reflect the mood of a quiet, peaceful night. The nocturnes of the Polish composer Frédéric Chopin are particularly famous.
